Modes The Solo vs Open vs Groups Thread - Part the Second [Now With Added Platforms].

Wouldn't it more logical to assume that your gaming friends tend to be people with similar gaming preferences to you rather than a proportionate representation of the whole player base?

That is an interesting point, one that is specifically interesting since a majority of people on my friends list are either Explorers, PvEers, or people who i've become friendly with on the forums... and since my views on Open vs Solo are to keep things as they are, i presume those people are those who think like me.

As I said, majority are playing in open a majority of the time from where i'm sitting. And if that's the case for me, surely for open proponents they should be seeing an even stronger trend.

This is why the whole hysteric over "solo players are affecting my game" for me seems rather amusing.

But you are also someone, presumably, who prefers to play in Open and that is also the trend that's reflected in your friends list. Is it a coincidence, a reflection of the larger trend of all players or simply a reflection of the sorts of players you would be more likely to meet and play with? I suggest it's more likely to be the latter.

I don't have any friends who play Open for example, because I don't play Open and so I wouldn't have met them in the first place. Even if I had met them, being friends with them (in game) would be pointless for both of us because we wouldn't ever play together.

But I agree with your last sentence completely. :)

So because my connection isn't stable enough to defend myself in open mode, I should miss out? Even though I dropped $150 on the Beta to support ED?

The game uses hitscan and p2p networking, having a bad connections not going to have any impact on defending yourself other than people might accuse you of combat logging if you frequently disappear in the middle of fights. The current implementation is deliberately lenient towards bad connections, one of the few good things about their networking choice.

I do honestly believe the perceived advantages of playing in Solo are hugely overblown. Yes, there are some minor things - RES farming efficiency, CZ farming efficiency, mining & trading 'safely' (that's a laugh) and so on. But come on, it really is only a fractional difference. In most cases co-op play for RES & CZ is more efficient than solo (so I have found - esp when it comes to pythons and condas).

You might want to look at the false-consensus effect. While at it, the list of cognitive biases makes for an interesting read.

It would also be nice to know the player spread in each mode, I'd guess that Solo / Group players would hang around the core worlds more then Open players do.
I believe that is why Open feels more "sparse". Because players have spread out more to avoid problem players. (I base this guess on what I have seen in my limited time using Open Mode)

It's a common issue with MMOs. Many have rules that put players in direct competition even outside PvP; whenever that happens, players that aren't highly sociable tend to spread thin, doing their best to avoid contact with other players. At least one MMO, LotRO, completely revamped their reward systems exactly due to this, and many others (including WoW) are toying with changes to reduce or remove competition (as in, competition for nodes or mobs) between players.

Actually, its only since 1.3 i've started playing in Open (EDIT: Correction, i did play in open when far far from civilized space, just to see where other players were). Prior to that i was 100% either solo or Mobius, but most people on my friends list were added well before that.

I don't need to but Agony_Aunt might. ;)

I am aware of those effects, which is why i accept my data is not perfect by a long way. You will note i was careful to say things like: from my point of view.

And yet in a wing you can kill twice as many in the same amount of time.

Assuming that there are enough spawns, sure, but the enemies in the game aren't hard. Takes like 40 seconds to kill an Anaconda in a Conflict zone, and in a RES you'd be lucky if another one spawns.

Ah! And this supports your argument because Reddit is a part of Elite and was built into power pl...

...oh, wait...

No its because reddit is ... Errr..

Sorry, no my mistake ;)

Great idea! why FD should care about anti-solo thread? MOVE IT ALL TO ONE BLACK HOLE!
80% players don't want solo. 18% don't care...

FD can delete solo and to alive . But why? Let people rage in one never watched by devs thread!

Good play FD, good play...

Great, at last some real numbers about how the matchmaking choices work and who is where, I missed the Dev post, any possibility you can post the link.

Thanks

The perfect solution would be to keep the galaxy that has open and solo, have another just for open players, just like xbox has. That is the angle we should be attacking this, not closing solo players out which i agree is not right.

Eighty percent of players don't want solo?! Well I never. And eighteen percent don't care?

So we can just delete solo...

Now if only FD had some experience cancelling one of their modes so they'd have some kind of idea of the furore that would cause that would be real handy as well. I imagine they'd just go quietly into that good night.

Been away a few days. Has there been an announcement re: the XBox galaxy? As far as I have read, they will also jave the three game modes and switching....

All players share the same galaxy on every platform and in every mode. Unless you mean the CQC which is separate, but from what I understand there is no galaxy there anyway.
