ED and the Oculus Rift DK1 Discussion Thread

Would it not be a good idea to wait a little while, to see if we get a better idea of when the CV1 will be released?*

If it's going to be sometime next year, then there's always the option to order a DK2. OK, so you won't be near the front of the pre-orders, but I doubt there'll be much of a delay - they're bound to ramp up DK2 production when they've got a better idea of exactly how many they're going to need. Reckon they've learned a lot from DK1 supply issues, plus they have FB money and organisation behind them now.

*I personally think they'll try to hit the end of this year, but may well slip into the start of next.

I'm of the opinion that the CV1 won't be 1440p+ due to the computing requirements to be able to do side by side 3D at 60fps+ at 1440p+.
If the rift requires the highest end GPUs to run then they limit their potential market massively. You would expect that they'd want to sell to as many people as possible so I assume that they'd target mid range systems as the required hardware to run a rift decently.

Since the Facebook buyout this has opened a lot of doors that were previously shut to Oculus and as they said they were just getting the scraps from the mobile phone table. With the new financial clout they will be able to get custom hardware so the resolution could be custom too

Don't know if anyone's posted this before but here's a simulation of what the various resolutions of the Rift could look like
http://vr.mkeblx.net/oculus-sim/

The DK2 will probably look a little different to the one on there though as it has a pentile arrangement of pixels rather than standard LCD RGB square layout.

Going off this simulator 4K looks awesome but we won't have the GPU grunt to do SBS 3D 4K at 60fps+ for a few years at least.

Palmer has said CV1 will be greater than 1080p, so 1440p seems possible. I also think 1600p isn't out of the question.

Just because the hardware is capable of 1440p+ it doesn't mean the games have to be set to that resolution. No reason you couldn't run at 720p if your GPU isn't up to 1440p or more. The Rift resolution won't be fixed as far as I know...

As long as we're guessing CV1 resolution, I'll put my money on a custom 2560x1280 panel, giving a nice even 1280x1280 per eye. They may even go wider than that. I doubt they'll go with a 16:10 resolution like 2560x1600.

And no matter how well rendering is optimized, having a great graphics card is going to make a huge difference in image quality for most games.

I'd dearly love to buy into the consumer version of this. But if there was any one else in the room I think I'd die of embarrassment whilst doing my "Stevie Wonder wears swim goggles" impression.

That coupled with likely having to use Voice attack would be far too serious a blow to the reputation round the house :)

I'll still get one and use it when no ones around like a deviant though.

Oh I don't know Jez would be a right laugh to see that on twitch :D

I'm debating whether to get the new developers' kit or wait for the consumer version. It could be a long wait for the consumer release and I doubt it'll be much better as the second developer kit was such a leap forward from the first (at least that's what I keep telling myself :S).

It is a great leap. Dk2 is a next gen OR considering dk1 previous gen. Dk2 has higher res, it's faster responsiveness, faster detection etc etc. I don't care much about waiting until the end of the year so I've preordered DK2 already. They plan to start shipping Dk2s in July, so by that time we will be deep into beta in ED or it may even be already released. I'll play with trackIR first and then will dive in with OR on. I can't wait for high rez OR.

Speaking of controls though, guys really, your are getting OR but you still plan to use keyboard and Mouse? Your robbing yourself off of an immersion. Get yourself x52 it's a good HOTAS for the money. Don't rob yourself off of an immersion.

And you can always sell the dk2 and get at least half of your investment back. Dk1's are going for 2 times the price on eBay at the moment.

Upgrade firmware .....

Not sure if anyone pointed this out, but in the latest revision of OR software you can upgrade the firmware of DK1. Well worth doing.

You are right! I shall try that soon, as this sounds interesting:

Improved magnetometer algorithm to support a full sphere of orientations by tracking multiple reference points.

What does the updated firmware provide?

This...

"Oculus SDK 0.3.1 is a Windows-only preview release intended to give developers early access to the upcoming improvements and APIs. The API presented is subject to change, and some new features (most notably DK2 position tracking support) are not included in this version. Mac and Linux support has also been omitted from this release only.

Release Highlights

Reorganized all headset and sensor interfaces to be exposed through a simplified C API.

Introduced SDK Distortion Rendering mode in which the Oculus SDK takes care of distortion rendering and buffer swap.

Significantly improved distortion quality, adapting the distortion function based on user configured eye relief.

Introduced the Timewarp rendering technique, used to reduce latency through reprojection

Hi together,

I just ordered the Premium Beta and did the first 3 missions in the Single Player.

Now I wanted to do the next missions using my Oculus Rift DK1. In general it is working but as my IPD is pretty large (OculusConfigUtil gave me 75mm) the images do not converge for me at all in Elite.

My guess is the Single Player build does not support IPD adjustment yet. So I will have to wait for "proper" Oculus Rift support in an upcoming update.

Does anyone else have the same problem?

Or does anyone have another solution to adjust for IPD (config files or similar)?

Regards

Matoz

New Oculus Rift rumour...

Linky.

Found this posted on another forum. No source listed, but sounds like it's from someone inside Oculus. Unconfirmed obviously, but sounds plausible.

"I have been debating whether or not to post this. I've decided to do it. Since I am under a NDA, I want to be careful about keeping my identity secret. This will be my only post using this account. Since the Facebook acquisition, a new and vastly improved CV1 is being planned. With all the resources we have now, the team is planning to custom-make some of the key components. The screen will be one of these components. The main goal with these new screens is to decrease the space between pixels. There are other things being considered, but none have been set in stone. Unfortunately, designing and manufacturing these parts will take some time. As a result, CV1's release date has been pushed back to late Q1 of 2015, although it may end up being Q2 if any unforeseen complications pop up (and they always do, so keep that in mind.) There is talk of releasing a lower-spec consumer version (still better than DK2) by Q4 of 2014, and then releasing the improved version with custom-parts later. If this ends up happening, the improved version will simply be CV2 and will be released in late 2015. This has not been decided yet and is still being debated internally. To end this on a good note, having tried many of the prototypes we have internally, you guys haven't seen anything yet!"

All unsubstantiated of course, but Palmer Luckey's bound to pop up and comment on it at some point.

My resolve finally crumbled and I've pre-ordered DK2. Hope I'm not so much later than you guys that I get deferred to a second round of shipping...

Well, you've got more resolve than I had.

Hopefully they will do a large production run for 1st release. :D
