And so the cycle continues as game developers riff on each others' work, much like CR riffed on Battlehawks 1942. I guess that wasn't so much spiritual succession as reverse-engineering, as he claimed...
Is this the kind of discussion you want Osman? How does one respond to garbage like this? Not SC related, and just pure hatred.

Because there are always exceptions to every rule. This isn't rocket science.....

Yes, exactly. And COD:IW is an exception. A spiritual successor to Wing Commander, doing Top Gun in space and not from the same creators. You just made your own point.

Pure hatred? Not SC related? Yes it is. We're talking about spiritual successors and games following each other...

"According to the game's designer Lawrence Holland, Chris Roberts told him at an industry conference that he had reverse-engineered Battlehawks 1942 to create the game engine for Wing Commander. "

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battlehawks_1942

Not sure how mentioning it since it's relevant to the conversation and your subsequent distractions about the splendid semantics of spiritual successors somehow qualifies as pure hatred.

I guess you could attribute that to X-wing based rivalry and jealousy, so how about from the lips of the mighty-if-slightly-muddled Chairman himself?

"In fact what Larry did on Battlehawks 1942 gave me inspiration for how I did the sprite 3D engine (previously I was going to do it with simple 3D wireframes / polygons like Space Rogue but I think that wouldnt have been nearly as immersive."

http://www.wcnews.com/articles/chrisroberts_14thbday.shtml

Like folk music, it's all riffing on previous work. Dunno how mentioning it is hatred. Unless you were the guy claiming CR was The Father of Space Soap or whatever that term was.

Anyway, your argument is rubbish and your tactics questionable at best so I'll bow out for now and let the next shift take over. I have to go receive my instructions from the hive mind!

It's not relevant if CR didn't claim WC to be a spiritual successor.

So I backed SC in October 2012 after reading about Chris Roberts and his work on the Wing Commander games. I played all of the WC games as a child and wanted something with updated graphics to let my nostalgia run wild. After backing I hung around the forums for a few months before getting fed up with the crowd demanding more and more, and see that Chris R was giving into every little demand they threw at him. I stop caring, I forgot about the game until it was brought to my attention about 3 months ago.

My friend is a recent backer and was gushing on how cool and nifty it was. Thinking that the game was finished I downloaded 36 gigabits worth of data. After many password tries I finally log in. I go to enter the universe. The game crashes on me. And it keeps crashing until my friend off handily says to delete my user folder. I do that and am finally let into to the game. I wake up on the bed and stand up. From there it's a mess of trying to walk/run out the door. It's like the very air was resisting! I make it to were I can spawn my ship. <<USE>> pops up. I hit 'E', since that is the universal use key. Nothing happens. I hit ESC and open the options and find the tiniest little picture of the keyboard layout. Squinting I madly search for the use key when my friend calls me and asks why I haven't been answering his in-game texts. Needless to say my first hour trying to play wasn't pleasant.

I start doing research, the game was fully funded and had a release date of 2014. They blew by that date with very little in game content. However, they are saying that they have a FPS module that will blow everyone's socks off. Star Marine. I think you can already guess were I'm going with this. Huge hype that ends with nothing. Getting alarmed now I start reaching out to other friends and some family members who are in the video game industry. They all tell me that SC is a joke. Everyone's abandoning ship because Chris is micro managing and demanding graphic quality that isn't possible with the engine they have. Full blown panic sets in, I start researching more of Chris Roberts. The man, the Legend to most backers. His vision for video games after WC, while in-line with mine, fall on their face. This isn't good, I start asking questions on Reddit. And after being down voted for asking simple questions I was lead here and other forums.

After all this research I'm left questioning how anyone can see this game coming out with even 1% of what they've promised. Both SC and SQ42 use the same engine, same graphics, same ships. Yet the alpha we have is nearly unplayable. How is SQ42 coming out this year like CIG(RSI) says it will? It isn't. It won't be out for 2017, or even 2018. By the time they've built a new engine for it and shrunk down to a tiny office, it'll be the new Duke nukem forever.

I know it won't even phase the die hard backers here, and I will probably be made fun of. But I had high hopes.

You have nothing to worry about. Being made fun of here is something of a badge of honour. It can indeed be most entertaining. Most posters have a firm grasp on reality, and those that don't simply disappear after a while :D

What you've described is by design. ;)
From where I'm sitting (pretty much on the fence) CIG will be delaying this one indefinitely and milking the backers, ie the outcasts and questioners who are now here, Until RSI/CIG bankrupt themselves.

Or... Roberts pulls a rabbit out of his magical German hat and mazeballs all of us by the years end.

Enjoy the ride.

Loved that part, the awful chat interface isn't shown for "immersion" purposes unless you explicitly open it with a keyboard shortcut. [squeeeee] There is no menu option for that, because this "game" is from the early 90s, where using a cheat sheet next to the keyboard was the norm. They haven't figured out how to do a standard 2010s game UI (like Elite has, guess how the chat works there).

You might be a little to late for asking a refund, but depending on your location you should try it, because that is clearly not the product you pledged for in 2012.

Isn't the chat interface switched on by default in 2.4 now? I will agree that the interface is quite difficult to get to grips with which doesn't make for a good first impression for new players. It doesn't help that they've had to disable the tutorial due to all the bugs either.

I don't know if it was you who posted a missive couple of weeks back during an exchange with one of those guys who kept going on and on about how "backers voted for the increased scope creep". Anyway, I used your excellent response today because it was so good, I had is in a scrapbook.

Anyway, today I was alerted to Batgirl's YouTube video meltdown in which she called dissenting backers, trolls.

I wrote her a letter (scroll down to the comments section).

That was a well worded response, and also true. I don't have any inside information so I honestly don't know if the SC project will fail or not.
I pulled out because I could not sit back and watch this disaster and be a financial part of it. However I would LOVE to hear illifonic's take on it all regarding star marine.
CIG basically said that they didn't live up to the fidelity, but I believe that is .

Dunno, I won't agree to the new ToS, so I will never see anything beyond 2.3.1 not even during "free flights".

The game interface is made by people, who don't have clue about game user interface design. It unusable, regardless if you are new player or a veteran backer. And that is solely Chris Roberts fault, because he is in charge to let professionals do that job, he got 116 millions for that.

It takes some strong semantics to make the claim that your quote is not paraphrased reasonably accurately by proKar, but I'll let that go. As for SC, you're right. there's not a chance it will include even a fraction of the features it promises and that's if it's ever made. I imagine they'll put out some version of what they have now (but with faux "planetary" landing on noise maps with landing areas stitched on and a few added systems in record breakingly large download files), game breaking bugs and all, and call it the MVP with promises of future fixes and added features with no deadlines. As for SQ 42 I'm curious what will constitute a mission (likely a five minute romp between cutscenes). Eta 2020

Sorry but I disagree.

I did say that I have no confidence that it would ship as pitched. It didn't. It shipped as a sort of MVP. My comment was correct.

I said the same thing about SC. Five years later, with all the stuff already removed - and 18 months late - my comment has already been proven to be correct.

Note that he sent me those links via PM; and I made the decision to share them because I felt that they continue to, not taken out of context, but incorrectly used to somehow infer that because I said the same thing about ED, that somehow, I am somehow wrong for saying the same thing about SC. Which, again, completely blows my mind.

Which leads me to invoke this:
