I have no idea what the practical use of phase shifting is to help us solve the puzzle but you might be on to something:

I have a worry that much of this good effort being put into searching the surface may be in vain....

Kinda wondering if the EMP pulse is dual purpose - sure it knocks us out enough to transmit it's message/map/thing but... reading the diagram a certain way it could be saying take the UP to that place and honk it to use the EMP to knock out a cloak device and reveal The Thing be in on the surface or in orbit not sure, but those UA's are sending their signal to Some Thing

I just thought of a test; (apologies if it has already been tried)

(Test needs 2 CMDRS)

CMDR 1 - could pilot the same ship type as the military transport that contained it (python i think, (for mass reasons)) and also carries a UP with a UA and the same number of meta alloys and reactive armour as the military transport.(just in case) any other ship is worth trying too.

CMDR 1 and 2 enter orbit of merope 3c and drop UP (magnetic field?) (maybe reach certain speed?) CMDR 1 initiates countdown for frameshift drive (any destination)

CMDR 2 times his honk (by synchronising countdown with CMDR 1 (you will have to count, and factor in the number of seconds delay from honk to distortion), to cause the UP to create this distortion; just as either the 4 seconds to jump is counting down or, a second or 2 after the jump.(before the bang noise from jumping )

Could this force a misjump?

The 'extracted from UP' image could be a map to overlay on galaxy map to show where you will be going.

If it has not been tested, a livestream, 'if possible' would be amazing.

Yes a different time Braben said there would be A Wormhole. Although he never said as a use of shortcut but he did say there would be ONE at one stage. From then he said there wouldnt be shortcuts but he never said there wouldn't be wormholes. The wormhole itself could be a "once off" experiance hence not a shortcut put a single instance travel to which you must make your way back

Would be interesting as a Beacon so that you can travel exactly to near the centre of the galaxy from anywhere. So not real fast travel but could cover half the distance from Sol to Jacques and back again in one go. I'd be okay with that.

ignoring all that, I put the bold mark between 4 very specific words: in the source code.

it is easy, either you elaborate what source code means for you, you chose your words appropriately to avoid misleading and you stop talking about file peeking -and what is more important- using it to argument something.

ehhh the only reason a Gray code would fit is that he invented it so his rotary encoder wheels wouldn't glitch out. There's nothng inherently round or circular about a gray code.
Besides, part of the problem we have is we have things that look likr binary info, but that really can't be because there isn't enough variation. If we take only 4 numbers of binary and switch them to the gray versions, we get 4 other numbers, but still 4 :(
