The Star Citizen Thread v5

Yeah, the point is more that, as soon as the “no competition” claim is made, you're already falling into a vortex of infinite scotsman regress. It has plenty of competition, but the one who makes the claim will almost always add on more and more conditionals to try to disqualify the very obvious candidates, to the point where, if you let it run for long enough, you inevitably end up with “…but SC has no competition in the genre of being a Star Citizen game currently being developed(?) by Chris Roberts” or some similar vacuous truth. :D

Hah - I was thinking about expressing that thought a while back - didn't know it was the Infinite Scotsman thing.

It's Edumacational this thread!

:D

It could have worked. It could have been a contender... Damn his eyes. Damn. Damn forever, it COULD have worked! D:<

That's what I thought, too, when backing after Arena commander was released in 2014, having previously only had dim nostalgia for Wing Commander 3 and no more info about Chris Roberts. He made that game I loved as a 10 year old back then, so reviving that with today's tech must be absolutely orgasmic, right?

Unfortunately it has become clear within the last two years, that Roberts is both this project's biggest boon and its biggest enemy. He can drum up support, he can conjure up a vision that lets people salviate and throw 125$ Mio.+ at him. Only he can't make games. He is so full of it, so dishonest probably to himself as to anybody else, and so stuck up in dreaming up his vision that after five years by his account and 125$ Mio. they can't even show a bloody introductory mission to save their lives.

Why is that? Could be, that tirelessly hiding in mocap shoots with actors and promising ludicrous things like cocktail mixing mini games, while selling ship renders is not what produces a game, is it?

I'm planning to ask for a refund in the next couple of days. Anything I should take into account being in Germany?

I also don't think it's a deal breaker, but the looks of structures when approached from orbit are very unnatural. It really looks like first-second generation 3D games: flat surface of uniform color and almost no structure (from the distance!, i.e. LOD settings are harsh) and on top of that a couple uniform dark polygons. It gets better close, but still something is missing for it to look real. But yeah, i'm sure FD are aware and at some point it will get better.

Also isn't that issue with stuff you see in very far distance when there's nothing to obscure your view? Even from plane high above buildings sometimes like like 2D flat textures. it is so much easier in atmospheric planets.

I'll honestly admit this:
When I first saw that I was ALMOST to bite the bullet and pay up some cash.

In hindsight it drives me literally up the wall the way the whole thing was handled.
Look- they could have honeslt yhandled this is small pieces, release a first limited version (Squadron 42), banked on that and keep on building all the vision Chroberts wanted along they years.

I did bite! $60 worth poisoned apple. (Asked for a refund on monday)

Of course it could have worked! Why not, there is nothing extraordinary about this kind of game. But the problem was that they never left campaigning mode to enter development mode. Instead going silent for a year or two they produce updates on a weekly basis to generate more income. This IS NOT game development, this is running a crowdfunding campaign ad infinitum.

Totally agree. CDPR blows away all those big name rpg devs and driven the quality bar through the roof for story.

If SC got those guys to write the story I might even consider buying in again....Might.

I think they need to do the whole thing, i don't trust CR to manage anything.

Well we have the same thing in ED (engineer bases, crashed ships which by the way blend quite poorly into the terrain in many cases, now fumaroles and geysers...), yet I don't hear people complaining about it.

There are complains, and rightly so, it need to be better, but we know its not just flipping a switch.

Sure, it is much more harder, because your LOD would need to simulate the complexity of how things look in a distance instead of doing just the reduction of geometry and texture quality. I am absolutely aware that this is no trivial task. I think good ambient occlusion and multiple light sources could help in a first step.

Ohhh yes. More major light sources (we know they are coming) will add a lot to ED.

If they don't pay you will send Merkel? That should keep any man awake -_-

So far, 590 people confirmed that there's excessive similarity of CIG's worm with Dune's worm. :D

You sly illegimate child of somebody, you! :p

"Does excessive similarity of CIG's worm with Dune's worm bother you at least a bit ? Yes, No, On the verge"

(Seriously mods, let me swear a bit and relax the filter! :p)

Bullpoo, it would be fun if everyone would just paraphrase like you did.

Seriously, their game is called Squadron 42.

And i thought this is a hint at the timescale for development (finding the answer) to be complete.

Another thing, since when do i have to pay for an account to read SA forums?

They locked that thread when it started to draw a lot of attention. They have servers to pay for :)

Holy son of libertine woman, i just saw this:https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showt...o-the-Planet-Terrain-LOD-and-Surface-Textures

@Guy from yesterday, Hi-Ban? I blocked you, but have a look at this.

To specify one small change - I fly regularly to one planet side base where I do missions for my faction. In 2.1 I see good looking planet, but plain same texture over it. In 2.2 I see not only different textures showing where's rock and sand, but I also much higher detail from distance.

So yes, 2.2 brings big improvements to planets. People just don't know it yet.
