ED and the Oculus Rift DK1 Discussion Thread

Perhaps the E3 Ambassadors will get to give E: D a go on DK2, and be able to report?

Not on Twitter personally, but perhaps someone who is could ask nicely?

I am interested in the DK2 myself an asked on both twitter and various elite dangerous facebook pages if anyone has used the beta with DK2. Unfortunately there hasn't been any responses yet. Perhaps Kerrash will say something about this soon in a tweet since I can't believe they'd be trying to demo the game in all its glory on a DK1.

What's the current wait time on a DK2, btw? Very tempted to put a pre-order in, but wouldn't mind giving it a go first.

Hi there,

i´m planning to use the oculus rift dk2 with ED.

I haven´t played the game yet, but i like to hear your experiences.

Is it possible to maneuver through the game solely with gamepad or joystick? Not just the flight, but also menus.

Which would work better in combination with oculus (without tastatur or mouse)?

Will the resolution of dk2 be enough to be able to read the menus?

Thanks!

I play ED with my DK1 alot and its a hell of a lot of fun :D
You can navigate the menus just fine using a controller
You cannot currently read the small text easily, but i assume it will be OK for DK2..

Oculus probably works just like head tracking, only with a screen for each eye fixed to your head.

With head tracking and a HOTAS stick you don't have to touch the keyboard. You look lower left or right to bring up the displays. The two POV hats on a HOTAS stick are used to navigate tabs and rows etc on the UI and the target button is the equivalent of enter. So everything can be done intuitively without taking your head off the screen, or touching the keyboard. It's very cool.

For $8 you also have the option of Voiceattack which lets you create macros that respond to speech and also responses the ship computer can say back. You can use voice commands to control the various computer systems on the ships that way too.

So plenty of options and it works very well. I am very impressed and look forward to possibly getting the next Oculus rift when it comes out too. Head tracking offers a taste but it's still disorienting because your moving your head in front of a static screen.

It's E3 of course, and OculusVR are there with a spiffy booth.

Looks like there isn't going to be much in the way of hardware announcements, but there are some nice things coming out:

Cost. The retail CV1 will be essentially sold at cost thanks in no small way to the Facebook acquisition (also, DK2 ships next month). CV2 expected 1-2 years after CV1.
"Hardware-wise, we were pretty locked in already [for Version 1]... but [Facebook] will allow us to make consumer V2 totally incredible."
LINK.

The CV1 (prototype) already exists at Oculus (has been tried by 400-500 people), and is significantly lighter, motion sickness is conquered, they're looking for mass adoption in the millions. LINK.

The first consumer version will be a lot better than DK2 [the current developer kit] - a lot better. There’s a lot of unannounced things we can’t talk about, but it’s going to be a lot smaller, a lot lighter, cheaper, wider field of view, higher resolution and higher framerate. DK2 wasn’t designed to be the thinnest or lightest thing we could make, or the cheapest for that matter: it was meant to be something we could get out quickly, that did all the functions we needed it to, very reliably. But it is a developer tool. We reused a lot of the same parts for DK2 that we used for DK1, because that allowed us to move a lot faster. But for the consumer version we’re making every piece from the ground up. There isn’t a single piece from DK1 or DK2 that will go into it, so we’re able to design it from the beginning to be a perfectly integrated, minimal piece of hardware.
LINK.

Hey ya'll, I ordered a DK2 and was wondering if a Nvidia gtx770 will be enough?

I have an i5 4670k, 8gb ram.

I have another identical gtx770 I can sli with but, have read on here it may introduce latency. Anyone actually try the Oculus in sli?

If I absolutely have to I can get a 780ti but, I'd rather not right now.

What's the current wait time on a DK2, btw?

Shipping starts at August.

Thanks for your replies! I think i´ll try the gamepad first, since it is easier to stash away and usable for more other games. Maybe i´ll get a joystick too, later on. Would be cool to be so immersed in the game with stick and oculus.

Shipping starts at August.

July for me! I ordered it within 30 minutes of the official announcement. :)

I played ED with a Rift DK1 and an XBox controller quite happily without needing the keyboard. Voiceattack made this much easier of course.

Oculus have said DK2s will start to ship in July.

Are you buying Oculus Rift DK2?

Hey All,

I am seriously considering putting in a pre-order for an Oculus Rift DK2.

I would guess that the higher percentage of likely buyers will be those who have already had expereince of the DK1.

I am not a developer - just and end user, is it a good idea to buy a DK2 or wait another year or so until its ready to sell as a consumer product?

Cheers
Aidi

Already have, just waiting for it to be delivered. I can't wait because, as good as the DK1 is it really isn't good enough. DK2 should be leaps and bounds better at least as far as resolution is concerned and I believe they also made some improvements on the latency front too, although I never had any problems with that.

I'm not ordering. I'd love to, but it will probably be outclassed by CV1 next year - I'd expect it to have higher resolution, lower latency and lighter weight. For me DK2 a bit too "bleeding edge" at the moment.

If you have the cash to spare though, go for it. It will be the best VR gaming experience around for a little while at least.
