THE FORMIDINE RIFT MYSTERY (Part 4)

So, I got into the whole Formidine Rift thing because I play on a Mac (for which Horizons isn't available) and this is supposed to be solvable in the base game. I've been following the developments about the rally points/bases, but have no way to participate in that part.

But I've been following up a few purely-in-space leads that people have suggested, primarily checking local news and looking for new unregistered comms beacons or other unexpected nav points.

So far, I don't think I've found anything meaningful, but the null hypothesis is still worth knowing about. I did find some minor bits and bobs that might be of note (but are almost certainly just random background detail or BGS/Powerplay spam).

Places I've checked so far:

  • Reorte
  • Riedquat
  • Avalon system (Persephone station)
  • Persephone system (Lombardellli's Legacy station)
  • Arcturus system (Hooperport, Singh Orbiter & Alison City)
I haven't checked Persephone in Sol, or any other planetary bodies, because base game.

Minor notes I did find:

  • According to tourist beacons, Faulcon deLacy have close ties with our friends the Sirius Corporation
  • They also have close ties with something called "WCM Corporation". Who dey? Not related to Wreakin Construction by any chance?
  • Persephone (station in Avalon) was host to a mysterious treasure hunt organised by one Alfred Jeffress. Assumed this was just some FDev-organised fun event, but... neither the winner, nor the prize, nor the object of the hunt were disclosed, which seemed odd.
  • Persephone (system) is currently suffering in outbreak. Pretty sure this is just normal BGS shenanigans, but the outbreak is fungoid in nature, and explorers have been discovering a lot of fungi lately, so I've included the text just in case.

Ishtar, Ereshkigal, and Prism are on today's itinerary.

Local news articles:

Treasure Hunt Successful —Avalon Herald 24 Mar 3302

Alfred Jeffress's treasure hunt is over. The mystery object has been found and returned to Persephone, and the winner will soon receive their prizes. Jeffress has extended his gratitude to those who participated, and promised to organise another treasure hunt in the near future."

New Discovery Both Sweet And Sour — Lombardelli's Legacy News — 27 Jan 3303

Astrobiologists operating out of Persephone were delighted to announce the discovery of a new variant of Absidia Fungi aboard Lombardelli's Legacy.

The fungi were identified as having developed when the station's neutrafarm began using locally sourced feed to care for their plants. The inevitable waste from the farmed vegetables was then found to be playing host to the new variant of Absidia.

In related news, doctors have said that they are confident the outbreak of Mucormycosis about Lombardelli's legacy can be easily dealt with once the appropriate medical supplies have been secured."

Ugh, mucormycosis looks pretty grim.

Couple of ammonia worlds well out in the rift if anyone wants to check them for probes:

* MYOIDEAU MA-A C0 4 (ringed)
* SPONGAEA RN-B D13-0 10

Edit: Should we be checking all planets in systems with an earthlike?

I did just manage a very low 1.09ly jump between two very close systems :)

Edit: Which star types can we rule out looking for EL's in?

Nice Zeeman! I Will keep this in mind.

[up] Nice work, I got far too tired last night!

Assimilator.... All system's within the 200ly range.

EAFOTS EK-A D0
EAFOTS IK-Z C0
EAFOTS CK-A D7
EAFOTS QM-M C7-2
EAFOTS OC-V D2-2

All checked thoroughly, scanned, flown around each body... everything [wacky]

I just realised there is a system i have not checked yet within the 200ly which is EAFOTS JQ-Y D0

I did an export from eddb for all ELW's in the EAFOTS sector. Came up with 43 of them ranging from 95LY to 1300LY from EAFOTS EU-R C4-1. Let me know if you want me to post that list, or not if they are already being tracked.

Sounds better than aimlessly flying about... Well it's good for exploration money, but.... :)

This first one I listed a few pages back as having been to it (although I gave it the wrong name!) Oddly enough Im currently there now having another look as I didnt search all the planets. First 3 are all high-metal content worlds. Doing an orbit of each, nothing showing on scanner so far. :(

I don't get 5/6, she wrote down that weird message on the 11/11/3270... then all of a sudden eighteen days later she writes another message, as if everything is kind of normal, Saying she's heading out to an earth like world? So our next step is finding a system with this 'earth like' world.

I had the same initial confusion when I read the delta logs. But after reading it again, I think in 5/6 she is reacting to her support ship being gone / destroyed. Then later she has "had time to accept it."

few people were asking me about my ASP science ship and how I can stand without smashing into the ground on high G worlds. like the Delta Settlement in the Rift.
this is the build I used. https://eddp.co/u/be8zehJg

Also I been using EDDiscovery to map the systems I'm exploring in a spherical pattern around the settlement for other clues. uploading the data to both EDSM and EDDB. my flight log can be found here.

Going on Drew saying we missed some galnet stuff...please read the galnet article on 19th nov 3302....meta drive audit complete...
It says that some exodus documents were missing and then a ex employee stole a ship and crashed in the alioth system...
Did he have on board information related like locations?
Has anyone followed this up before ?

Indeed : https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php/309054-Official-release-from-The-LOSP?highlight=MetaDrive%20Inc

Its a diplomatic communication, so things are not here so direct, but of course, I had all of that in mind when I wrote this.

I guess a lot of people concerned by the Lore noticed that too ^^

Diadem
ˈdʌɪədɛm/
noun
a jewelled crown or headband worn as a symbol of sovereignty.
synonyms: crown, coronet, tiara, circlet, chaplet, headpiece, headband, fillet, wreath, garland;

archaic
the authority or dignity symbolized by a crown.
noun: the diadem
"he refused the diadem of all the Caesars"

Cypripedium
Cypripedium is a genus of 58 species and nothospecies of hardy orchids; it is one of five genera that together compose the subfamily of lady's slipper orchids (Cypripedioideae). They are widespread across much of the Northern Hemisphere, including most of Europe (one species), Russia, China, Central Asia, Canada the United States, Mexico, and Central America. They are most commonly known as slipper orchids or lady's slipper orchids; other common names include moccasin flower, camel's foot, squirrel foot, steeple cap, Venus' shoes, and whippoorwill shoe. An abbreviation used in trade journals is "Cyp." The word "Cypripedium" is derived from the Late Latin: Cypris, from Ancient Greek: Κυπρις (Kypris), an early reference in Greek myth to Aphrodite, and Greek: pedilon, meaning "sandal".

Velum
/ˈviːləm/
noun
a membrane or membranous structure, typically covering another structure or partly obscuring an opening, in particular:
ANATOMY
the soft palate.
ZOOLOGY
a membrane, typically bordering a cavity, especially in certain molluscs, medusae, and other invertebrates.

Monile
Italian from the Latin meaning:
- Necklace
- Collar
- Jewel

Vestimenta
Spanish for Clothing

- - - Updated - - -

Thanks, hopefully I'm interpreting that correctly as we've managed to narrow down the search zone with the recent co-ordinates.

You know that whole "Seven Veils" thing? Where she had to take off certain pieces of clothing to "pass through the gates"?

This sort of seems like the whole thing.

[*]Upon disappearing, Kahina leaves her tiara along with the Dark Wheel/Salomé medallion, in her 'stripped' ship, 'Seven Veils'

  • Links here to ‘stripping’ of items – Ishtar/Inanna/Salomé – removal of garments and the ship ‘Seven Veils’ being stripped in Achenar
  • In the 'descent of Ishtar' mythology, Ishtar had to get permission to enter from 'Ereshkigal' (Babylonian 'Queen of Underworld'). She then had to remove seven items of clothing to pass each of seven gates to the underworld. The 'crown' was removed at the first gate, 'pendants for her ears' on the second and 'chains around her neck' on the third. Does this mean Kahina has passed the first gates? Or possibly an indicator to tell us she has passed the threshold to 'something'
  • Stripping is used again in reference to Kahina being 'stripped' of her imperial title (October 14th)

First, she was stripped of her "crown". The "Diadem" would fit that.

At the third gate, she was stripped of a necklace. The "Monile" would fit that one.

At gate six, she was stripped of clasps around her hands and feet. I don't know if slippers count, but the "Cypripedium" could fit that.

The Velum, is, as you say, a membrane. However, in Latin, one of the meanings for the word was "curtain", "covering", or "veil". In the myth, the woman was stripped of a breechcloth at gate seven. The "Velum" could fit that one.

In Spanish, "vestimenta" means clothes and jewelery. In the myth, she loses gemstones around her hips, as well as the pendants on her ears and ornaments for the . It's also possible that those hand and feet clasps could fall under this category, too. So then, "Vestimenta" could fit for those.

For right now, I'll disregard how in the myth, these things are all returned to her.

Daibo, where these wrecks were found, is only about 130 Ly away from Achenar, where the Kahina's ship "The Seven Veils" was stripped, and Kahina disappeared. So maybe Daibo is acting as a "gate" of sorts, and they were "stripped" of her by being destroyed.

Daibo also means "godmother" in Japanese. Perhaps this is a link to the old woman?

In Hausa (a north-African language), Daibo means "to take out".

Another thing worth pointing out (and totally unrelated to this) is that the old woman's ship was called "My Heart and Soul".

An excerpt from one of those Expedition logs (EAFOTS GL-Y E2) says this:

Formidine Rift Delta Mission 2/6
Expedition Log: 12/09/3270
"It's pretty out there, we've seen a gorgeous double nebula called Heart and Soul. You should see it, lots of bright blue stars nearby, wish we could divert to have a closer look, but our mission is beyond apparently. Really brings back how big the galaxy is. Make you feel real small and insignificant.

It makes me think that there's something in the Heart and Soul Nebula. There's something in there, I'm sure of it.

Also, this whole descending into the "Seven Gates" thing is the underworld. Of course, Persephone and Erishkigal are top contenders, because they are gods of the underworld, but there's another system (one in Imperial space) that relates to this. There's a system called "Asphodel" an area in the underworld of Greek mythology that's only 23 Ly away from Achenar. According to mythology, someone who's not good or bad will reside in a field of wheat for eternity, which is known as Asphodel. Maybe there's something there.

"Elysia" a name for apart of the underworld for heroes, is 50 Ly away from Achenar.

There's also a system called "Tartarus", (the entire underworld) just 45 Ly away from Achenar.

"Charonium", a system about 125 Ly away from Achenar (Independent) is known in Greek mythology as an entrance to the underworld that gave off poisonous vapors, and had an oracle living inside of it. According to a myth, Orpheus goes here to retrieve his wife, Eurydice.

Daibo could be short for "Daibolos", which is an old greek name for "devil", or one who entices people away with sin.

There are unpopulated (as far as we know) systems called Erebus and Anubis, with relatively close proximity to Sol. A populated system called Osiris (egyptian god of the underworld) is also close to Sol. There's also one called Hecate, which is also associated with the egyptian underworld. These probably won't amount to much, but I figured I'd point it out anyway.

Most likely, most of these will amount to nothing. But it's still worth a go.

I hope that I have provided maybe even a little insight for someone. Especially with that bit about the Heart and Soul nebula, because that's important, I know it.

Wonder if we would get a transmission like those "incoming mission critical update" messages we get while doing missions when we jump into a system?

uhm...you got any screenshots? How do i have to picture that for myself? Clouds just hanging around?

As soon as I get access to my laptop, I will post. 10000+ jumps and just atarted noticing these.

I apologize for the lack of quality, as I am using the win10 recorder; I'm not a videographer at all. I'm not even sure I'll get the link to work. But the fluffy white clouds come in from the outside of the witchspace tunnel appearing to expand toward the center. It may be this was there all along, and I'm just going crazy after being out in beyond H&S for so long.

It falls just short of actual confirmation of Sirius Corp's involvement. That said, more and more fingers seem to be pointing in that direction.

Quick question: I seem to remember reading somewhere that Sirius Corp developed the current generation of hyperspace technology, the Frame Shift Drive. I can't for the life of me find a citation anywhere. Does anyone know if this is correct?

I can confirm through one of Reorte's tourist beacons that Sirius made the FSDs and power plants for Faulcon deLacey's ships.

"Faulcon deLacy manufactures many of the smaller components in its own ships, and has a well-established relationship with the Sirius Corporation for its hyperdrives and power plants. It is also a big customer of the WCM Corporation - buying its hull alloys from them as raw material." (Faulcon deLacy's Business Realations beacon, Reorte)

Hmm... could "WCM" be Wreaken Construction from the recent GalNet article?

Can't help but wonder:

Are beacons the same as satellites? They were dropping beacons, not satellites.
Satellites don't fit in a sidewinder. A satellite is bigger than my Asp.
They were dropping beacons in the void. What's considered the void? Space between systems?
Are those perhaps the Data Beacons we occasionally find in POI on planets? That can't be either...they still seem too big to fit in a sidewinder.
Is the search still limited to 200LY around EAFOTS EU-R or was that limit just for the CG about the satellites we have already found?
Are we searching for ELWs with satellites or even for ELWs without any satellites (in the system I mean, not necessarily in the ELW's orbit)?\

I wonder if the length of time between messages 5 and 6 gives any indication to how far she traveled before encountering the system with the ELW?

I worked it out, and the result was roughly 0.05 Ly.

My guess is that she stayed in the system. The average system is roughly 2Ly wide, so it's conceivable that she flew off in a direction, picked up a planet on a scanner, and decided to check it out. When it turned out to be an ELW, she sent out the next message, and it was recieved after 0.05 Ly of travel.

So she stayed in the system. Now we just have to figure out which system that is.

Yeah, i don't have jumponium gear for the first time in ages :( i could go find some in a second and let you know before then. I mean it's worth checking and eliminating. "There's an Earth-like world here...Going to try and reach it, you never now"

Sorry dude I'm going to do your head in now ha, but i have had time to burn recently... hence being on ED.. ALOT! But i have checked every single system with an ELW within 200ly of GL-Y E2. I will get you a list in the next half an hour of the systems i have checked.
Should be 200 lys from eafots EU-R C4-1 :)

Extra candidates is always good :)

For the record, are you guys aware of the Neutron boost storage trick? Basically, do the usual FSD overcharge neutron thing, then target the system to jump to, and make sure you are going to be flying through neutron arm. When the FSD is charged, throttle forward (and be nice and close to the neutron arm) and, so long as the FSD overcharges again in the 5 second countdown, you'll get another boost to use from the new system.

Could be handy in some cases.

Z...
Nice!, didn't know that! Thanks :)

Can you do this with standard refueling? What I mean is, if you do your maximum jump which will take your tank to empty and then get close enough to the star to start refueling once your jump drive is engaged, can you fill up your tank before jumping or will it disengage? (I hope that makes sense!)
