From newsletter #38 (my underline) ...

... or is a 'player owned mining machine' not the same as your ship + mining laser ?

Rug

In the old Frontier Elite game we had some equipment that could be left on a planet and mine certain things from it. Or even a large asteroid. Maybe they mean this feature?

The MB4 Mining Machine.

Yeah, this is the kind of machine the newsletter is talking about.

Mining machines won't happen until we can land on the rocks.

In the meantime, mining will be from the ships, a la Eve.

Actually you already can land on asteroids, you just have to be pretty carefull.

Granted, up close the roids don't look like much yet but it was pretty fun hopping from rock to rock to make sunrise pictures and what not.

Like the moon, you can fake a landing on ED planets too. However, they have a habit of swallowing you without surface collision switched on. I just think of the surface as a 2D, hologram projected from a nearby black hole - really immersive.

Is Mining In The Current Build?

Hi all. Sorry if I missed this somewhere, but can you mine in the current build in the game?

A question about Mining, will it be like... ?

Hello!

So my first post. Yay. So far i wasnt dissapointed by the beta 1 itself, just purchased it, played it a bit, got frustrated a bit... the usual ^^ still loving it :p

My question is:

I very liked to had make a screenshot, but for some reason it didn´t worked out. Not sure if that is just a full screen issue or a security issue, but:

When i was flying around at a Resource Extraction Area, you can already see NPC ships that uses mining lasers to mine the asteroids around. Like a big continues blue beam. Looks like a Beam laser, but blue instead. They fire it for around 15-30 second at a asteroid and fly to another one.

Will Mining work that way or is it just some kind of technical demo to spice up the environment when you hang out at a resource extraction area? I also noticed at a scan that this ship had a sub-module called "mining laser" on board.

So long and thanks for all the fish!

You should take a look at the Design Discussion Archive and in particular the one that discusses mining.

The current animations in game are only placeholders, although the DDA does mention using lasers to skillfully break of flecks of rock that can then be gathered. The 'mining laser' equipment also appears to be a placeholder and while spotted on AI, doesn't appear to be utilised in anyway.

I'm interested in mining myself. they mentioned how you can mine, and yes it done with some kind of energy beam. I hope that it will get more complex and also involve drilling and operating other equipment than just in your ship. Maybe for later when we get out of our ships and walk around.

Are you listening FDEV? :D

I've no idea about mining but to take a screenshot you press F10 for standard resolution and Alt+F10 for high resolution.

Alt+F10 can cause your pc to stutter a bit though so dont use it when your docking or approaching other objects as you will be effectively blind for a bit.

you will find the shots you've taken in your pictures folder within a Frontier Developments folder.

You can read about the official mining design here:

http://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=7196

Before mining something you first need to find it though, so exploration is also part of the game play (unless you bought the information of course). The official design around exploration can be found here:

http://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=6561

Exploration was also described in a more fluent way in the latest newsletter:

Welcome aboard! :)

Well thanks for the answers. I was just curious because the NPC`s seems to do already the job and so i thought maybe that feature is a bit closer than it looks like ^^

Whats FDEV?
