ANNOUNCEMENT Community Update - January 3306

The fact that a beta for bug testing has meant no more CGs shows how poorly staffed the E.D team are and how little FDev cares about us.

For me it looks like ED is slowly coming to an end after 5 years. This is a great pity, but unfortunately there is nothing to stop it ...

Or those facts just show, as they publicly announced, that most of the team is working on that big update for the second half of the year, whenever it will arrive.

If for you, the fact they dare reserve a team for what is for them their biggest update ever is "not caring about us" and the game "coming to an end" well sorry but you need to recheck and reevaluate the facts.

It may not be as fast to be released as we want, but claiming that if they can't do it super fast they can't do it at all is just speculation.

To be fair, he does have a point that the team seems to be a bit understaffed for the not-new-era content. Remember the public form for submitting CGs? Simplified, you pick either combat, trade or exploration, enter system and faction name, done. How much time does that take?

I completely understand IIs, but putting ordinary CGs on hold seems a bit odd.

The snow tracks are nice, and even consoles have games doing that now.

eg: Red Dead Redemption 2

We need snow planets and space-legs plz!
Snow would be AWESOME - but not necessary.

I'll leave wang and ball drawings to others.

Well, they don't just have "one" database with all the things, and we don't know how CGs are handled under the hood. Maybe that big update will change things on that front, same as in rendering, explaining why they haven't released the new icy stuff and disabled CGs/IIs for now.

The fact is that they would avoid doing any work twice, and they probably want to be on schedule for the big update right ? Hence as many hands on deck as possible while avoiding crunch.

I'm not really surprised or disappointed as it would probably unfold in a similar fashion in lots of dev projects.

Cure narrative you guys have got going there. Any reason why you are singling out OA and attack him specifically?
Well, the whole motley crew should be included by inference, but to be one of the figureheads in an 'Open Letter' that demanded no new content until the bugs are fixed, then to bemoan the 'lack of new content' does open the gates to being reminded that all we have currently could be attributed to his, among others, actions, surely?

OA is fine... In my adding a response I just considered it ironic that he'd make such a comment.

(not that I am convinced that the 'Open Letter' was entirely the cause of the current 'bug-fixing' period)

The OA vid was the only one I saw mentioned in the Facebook Mobius group. If I had seen others, then I would have mentioned those. I don't follow any "influencers" on YouTube so there's probably a raft of stuff out there I am missing.

We need Frontier to stop laughing in our face. Stop saying so many empty words and say concrete things. So you can gently caressing open up a thread to say you'll open up a thread. What kind of a boss approves of such a lame communication strategy?
Thanks to all the commanders who joined in the beta back in November, we're happy to announce that the January Update will be launching on the 14 January!

I just want to say thank you for taking the time to do it right instead of pumping out half finished content like the majority of game companies. You guys do a phenomenal job at FDev. Keep up the awesome work!

You're right, instead they take a very long time to release half finished content.

The "Community Letter"... What a joke.

The focus on stability and general QoL is nice for now. However a stagnant Galnet, lack of CGs (even though the player requested ones are already written out and could be used for weekly CGs like it used to be), and a general halt to in game stories (Galnet or otherwise) means things will be really damn stagnant.

The 'fluff' articles in Galnet news made it feel, well, like the news. The weekly pre-baked CGs gave the game a sense of motion and purpose. These played a huge role in keeping things from getting stale in between content releases. Thanks to "Community Leaders" the people who plugged in the text for weekly CGs and daily Galnet can now help fix bugs! Nevermind the fact that the 'fluff articles' gave a interesting backdrop to everything or explained the state of the galaxy.

While it was annoying to not be able to interact with the stories at times, it could've been solved by pre-planed CGs (for minor arcs) and Interstellar Initiatives (for more impactful arcs) to decide the outcome of stories with the consequences only panning out later (as not to overload the devs). Instead our "Community Leaders" decided that Elite's headline feature of a living galaxy be sidelined for a minor reduction in dev time. Thank you, really!
And then OA releases a video bemoaning the lack of content updates. Are the best of the best (with honours) just using Frontier to drive clicks to their vids?
Love it :)
Influencer campaigns for: no more new content until bugs get fixed to our satisfaction, and we'll be watching!
Influencer then complains when their demands have been met...

In the mean time ordinairy players who disagreed... 🤷‍♂️
The reduction from FDev of new content, Galnet news and CGs, happened before the Community Requests were posted. There were many complaints throughout 2019 of how threadbare the two main updates (April & September) were of new content.

Meanwhile, the Community Requests didn't campaign for "no more new content until bugs get fixed".

Feel free to read it again if you want to check what was being asked for:

Letter campaigned for resource re-allocation to bugs. Resources have to come from somewhere. Surprised you didn't think this through - though really fdev should have made it clear when you held your talks I guess.

I am happy to put my hand up and stand corrected that the open letter was not primarily about no content until bugs are fixed. In fact, a couple of points of the letter I agree with:
  • Improve Bug Reporting & Communication
  • Empower Frontier-Employed Community Managers
(My two biggest frustrations).

The open letter may not have asked for that, but I certainly have seen the sentiment be expressed by a number of people over the last couple of years.
Almost exactly the idea of pausing development of all new content (because it's inevitably going to be half-baked and feel tacked on), until the base game is fully stable. Usually in relation to networking, instancing or PvP balance and/or "fixing" combat logging, in turn usually meaning they want FD to stop making new content until they abandon P2P instancing altogether.

Re-reading I still find the implication that new content is not required until the bugs are quashed:

All of us love Elite: Dangerous, and we feel that Elite: Dangerous is not what it could be. We don’t ask Frontier Developments for miracles. We don’t ask for new content and we don’t ask for a major shift in development. We simply want everything already delivered to be maintained properly.

Maybe my interpretation is incorrect....

The September update was a total dog's dinner with how much of the game 'broke' in random ways, but the 'team' was on it and had the major issues corrected very quickly... this being pretty much the 'norm' for the then 16 months I'd been playing so it wasn't a surprise.

Yes, I had read the 'Open Letter' when it was published and disagreed with sufficient of its content to not want to add my name to a list...

Many of us wanted the half-baked stuff fully cooked before adding new stuff, yes. Give us more varied and interesting missions, fix broken and half-baked multicrew, make PP great (not again, as it never was), etc. But this would itself add NEW CONTENT. Heck, a revamp of the mission system along with improved CGs would add a huge amount of content.

The problem is that some of you confuse new ships (that includes the overhyped Fleet Carriers that most of you will be bored with in a month) with new content. Even atmospheric worlds, which I'm excited about, will become just as boring as airless moons if we're hamstrung by the same limited, repetitive, soulless mission system we currently have.

As for bugs, my personal complaint is that Frontier has prioritized silly stuff (like the color of cockpit panels of the DBS or the wires hanging down in the Anaconda) over the game-breaking things like crashes, broken menus, rubber-banding in Open, etc. And while I'm not one of these anti-Arx guys, I do think that bug fixes should have come before Arx. As long as the game feels broken and half-baked, I'm not spending more money on cosmetics, regardless the currency.
