Yes, I’ve pondered a few times over the full stats recorded and whether TDW invitation could be calculated in-game from those. But what could trigger their interest as a “legendary group of adventurers, explorers, investigators and treasure-hunters; only a handful of the bravest and most competent pilots of each generation are honoured with an invitation to join”. I’m triple elite, member of 64 kylies club, friends with all current engineers, been to Sag A* & Beagle Point & Colonia. Dived more than my fair share of BH. Scanned a few thousand systems & first discoverer on quite a few. Still no invitation (unless I failed the test?). As a goody two-shoes I rarely go outside the law, don’t murder many (& they deserve it), never massacred civilians.....

But I find it strange that nobody has yet found their station (unless they have & are keeping it quiet). Don’t believe Lyta Crane that it orbits 8th moon of a GG, but I do suspect it does not get instanced until you’ve passed the test, or it’s in a permit-locked system and the test gives you the permit (perhaps this is more likely). “Bravest & most competent pilots” does suggest perhaps BH or anti-pirate ops. I received the “agents sent after you” message once, ages ago, when I was BH to raise my combat rating. Perhaps you have to kill the agents to get it?

Edit:
Just looked at my notes from And Here The Wheel. Chapter 12 says:
TDW are elite-ranked treasure hunters from a bygone age, tales of the Ryder family, they found monsters beyond explored space, they never found Raxxla but found something else-Soontill, a former Thargoid planet lost by them, full of Thargoid treasures that TDW (who are really the Ceepers (Circle of Independent Elite Pilots)) exploit.
Ch13: In an explored planetary system, sufficiently far from civilisation to be of little interest, with a red dwarf star, an asteroid belt & a blue-green gas giant, the CIEP base orbits the gas giant & rotates with Imp standard gravity.

So should we be concentrating around Soontill? Red dwarf star matches the codex pic.

Edit2: think a blue-green GG is type 3. EDSM says there are 14,714! Can’t see how to add in type M subdwarf to the search filter!!! Spansh/bodies doesn’t do logical AND in the filtering (I asked him a while ago).

Edit3: interestingly (or not) Neptune is in-game as a Type I, whereas it should be a Type III
Would these Thargoid treasures have any connection to the latest burning stations? A certain shadowy organisation distributing shiny alien tech as a means to influence the political landscape?

CIEP are a splinter group from TDW. The split was between Oberon and Neptune Ryder - the later preferring to concentrate on Raxxla. CIEP stole the starburst from the feds - a super-weapon that needed multiple ships to operate and attempted to use it again the Imperials to stir up war between them. So the weapon was fed research.

CIEP were decimated as a result of their faliure due to Gary's intervention and evacuated their (4?) bases - a diminished power, but presumably out there licking their wounds. The TDW are likely to have reclaimed the bases, and Gun's base in the book matches the codex description at least partly. Finding that base would be a good start.

But CIEP /= TDW, at least not all of it and not the bit we are interested in for Raxxla.

Until the retcon I would have agreed with you. But if TDW are “explorers and treasure hunters” they probably won’t be interested in the political landscape. Thargoid explosives are more in the domain of INRA/AEGIS & hence The Club, who most definitely are interested in the political landscape (& maintaining their position/control).

Yes, I agree. I suspect AHTW etc were all written before the retcon, which was FD’s attempt to rationalise everything.

Soontill and and CEIP were invented because Raxxla and TDW were basically off limits, for the non in-huse authors.

The retcon didn't change much. The only major change, was that the Alliance / Thargoid meetings in the late 2350s were deleted from history. The rest of the mismatches between the books and the game are just sloppiness and poor communication. The in-game mismatches (between actual events and codex / beacons) are mainly due to bugs that lead to things happening in the wrong order.

Funn little side quest, for anyone in the bubble: Find Rafe Zetter's Anaconda, in Tionisla. It is supposed to be stationary at 0.1 ly from the star.

I cant help myself, Im triggered every time. Theres at least one place in that system where theyve hidden 1000s of ships for 100s of years, every time Ive been there theyre just hidden, even a recent addition, an ancient cobra cant actually be found or seen. I think this one thing would make me more happy than anything else in game.

The in-game lack of Tionisla Graveyard is a huge immersion breaker. It was a key part of the original Holdstock novella for heaven's sake! as well as more recent lore.
I suspect FD just can't create a good representation (include cost-effectively there if you want) given the instancing limitations. After all it is supposed to have thousands of ships of complex shapes orbiting a planet, with a station for the administrative authority....

great shame though!

Anybody good at handling JSON files? It would be nice to download a data dump from EDSM and filter out systems with (only?) a type M subdwarf plus asteroid belt plus type 3 GG and see if there is anything within/near the bubble (it's not me I'm afraid!)

Running through large JSON files is something I can do. I would have to find out what JSON values match exactly what you describe… Or can someone give me a hint?
[edit]…and I'm not sure where to get the dump for that. On EDSM I only see "Celestial Bodies, updated in the last 7 days"
[edit] EDSM knows xxx (rechecking code) systems within 1000 Ly radius around Sol. Querying those through the API, one each second, would take 4.4 days… not sure if this is a good solution (won't do it faster to not overload their service)

That's... a lot of JSON. Like, 8.6 gigabytes or some such thing. I'm trying to get it to load into XCode at the moment but I'm having a hard time confirming if it's even formatted correctly.

I forced it to quit upon reaching 50GB memory usage, much of it compressed into the available 32GB physical space.

It's still trying. Crunching away. I've maxed out the physical memory of the machine and it's now paging to and from the hard disk, on a 32GB machine.

Not sure how possible this is gonna be via my methods.
I wrote me a small program and can do that as a datastream => No mem problems. But where is the download of a file with all the systems + bodies. I only find systems with coos – no bodies. (~7.8GByte)

Programming button pushed, I can't resist ... You should use a tool built for searching large files. If you're familiar with grep there's the silver searcher (ag) which is similar but designed for speed. It can search through a 10gb file in a second. With mac it should be on homebrew.

Not sure what "subdwarf" means >: Like body? But then main star must be huge O/B like and list is short.
For API limit was 100ly around, so doing next:
Center: Sol
Radius: 100ly
Main star: M dwarf
Must have at least 3 giants.
