I like how they do these things during my work day...in the latest mystery. it lead to a prison camp and someone named

we need to find him and figure out his real name.
maybe he knows something about raxxla

What are your elite ranks? Here are the Green Glow videos:
Sol, Green Glow in Sector 29 - 7:36
Weak Green Glow in Sector 9 - 9:26
Some Observations:
- Entering the asteroid belt during SC causes a known bug to occur in the Orrery System Map, which will display your position incorrectly.
- New signals will often be detected but won't show up on radar.
- The green glow possesses these characteristics:
- Source seems to come from above, behind or below ship, near asteroid belt.
- Varies in strength, though causes are undetermined.
If it appears, it is always just after the Orrery System Map is closed.(@Jorki Rasalas clarified this has happened to them before using the Orrery System Map)- Seems to originate from a distant location in most instances, but fades quickly. One or two videos suggest it could be close to player's crafts.
- Honking at it does not seem to have an effect.
Suggestions
Set up recording software before attempting tests (I recommend Shadowplay if you use NVIDIA if you can get it to work, ReLive if you use AMD). If possible, perform tests in a Wing with one or more other players. All tests are meant to be performing during or just after a Green Glow sighting.
- Use external ship camera to quickly do a 360° flip around your craft, noting anything that might be the source.
- Quickly flip ship around to see if the light reacts to various angles.
- Test to see if other members of your Wing can see the green glow after or at the same time you do.
- Have other Wing members honk at the green glow in sequence.
- After encountering glow, remain in the same position long enough for the glow to do a full orbit.
Prove that the glow can appear before entering and then exiting Orrery System Map.- Identify positions of new signal sources during green glow, especially instances that are very close.
- Enter FSS during green glow and look for anything scannable (credit to @Filthymick420)
I still don't believe it's a bug yet, by the time the external camera was lined up the glow likely would've faded as roughly 6-8 seconds had passed, and the glow was already fading before switching to camera. Would be interesting to get a wing out there to see if the source is visible from a second ship.Very interestink!!
That first one of Spliffz is about the strongest I've seen the glow. Interestingly he was only about 1100 ls from Sol, heading away from Sol towards Jupiter, & quite a way above the plane of the belt. Light source seems to be astern.
The last one, with the external cam, is disappointing, in that I can't see any sign of an external light source that would cause this glow (although seems weak in this example).
So is it a lighting bug after all???
What are your elite ranks?
Maybe one area lights up for each rank you have. The only Elite I have is in Exploration.
It looks like some of those videos can be explained by ship contacts on the radar. I think the second last (SteelQuagmire - green glow) is the most obvious: The glow starts to appear, the light coming seemingly from behind. Then a friendly ship contact appears on the radar: Behind the player and above; as the friendly contact moves away, the light also gradually disappears.
On other videos you see ship contacts roughly in the direction from which the light is coming (notice especially how the shadows in cockpit act, when the ship is rotating).
In some of the videos there are no ships on the radar at all. But seeing how the ship contact appeared in the middle of nowhere in the second last video, the glow could indeed stem from ships not visible on radar.
Shoutout to the Independent Raxxla Hunters, some seriously impressive work done in the last few days. Here are all the video links from the investigation channel.

Unfortunately I haven't had time to watch them all and look for patterns, hopefully this is useful to someone.

The main asteroid belt has inner radius 1027 ls from Sol outer radius is 1631 ls, so middle is 1327 ls.I could only see something useful in CMDR Falconscreech's vid, it said 924 kLs from Sol. Asteroid belt is 1.1 - 1.6 kLs (my calculations, not FD's). Could be the closest belt limit, don't know exactly where FD put it in-game.
When checking for the green-glow source, it might be useful to have Sol selected in order to get an accurate distance reading, so other cmdrs might use it to try to replicate.
edit: typos
The main asteroid belt has inner radius 1027 ls from Sol outer radius is 1631 ls, so middle is 1327 ls.
If you want to see the asteroid cluster symbol shown in the hud then you mustn’t have anything selected. It’s easy enough with a headtracker to keep glancing over at Sol to check the distance, or a quick look in the nav panel if Sol is at the top of the list.
I’ve been checking a few asteroid belts, on my slow return to the bubble. One thing I have noticed, is that clusters are often way of the plane in the orrery map.The main asteroid belt has inner radius 1027 ls from Sol outer radius is 1631 ls, so middle is 1327 ls.

Ok. Distances from sun. 1st vid - aprox 1071 kLs, 2nd vid - unclear, 3rd vid - unclear, 4th vid - 1501 kLs, 5th vid - 924 kLs, 6th vid - unclear, 7th vid - unclear, 8th - unclear, 9th - unclear, 10th - unclear.
Even with those numbers, on one instance the green glow appeared outside those numbers. We need to know if the glow can appear even outside belt limits, or if it's belt-only.
yelboc said he has seen it at Titan station and no one noticed his messageWith regards to the asteroid 'clusters'. I've found that the ring is in fact a very thin object and that you can stay in the ring (belt on left hologram) all the way from the inside edge to the outside edge with care. When you see the ring appear and disappear, its because you have intersected the thin ring. According to the orrery view, the plane of the belt is not quite in line with the ecliptic, i.e. it doesn't quite follow the plane of the planets themselves, so its hard to stay in the right plane. To repeat the experiment, find the ring at its outer most edge, and then head straight for Sol, you will find you're in the ring right up to the inner edge.
The orrery view seems to be bugged. On PC it does not update in a live way - once opened the marker doesn't move with your ship. I'm not sure this is intentional as on other platforms, I'm told it updates in real time. More significantly, as soon as you are in the belt, you position is incorrectly reported on the map. I was in (1) and then reported in (15) or thereabouts. Likewise a similar shift in other sectors. The offset seems to be consistent, though I don't have enough evidence for that yet. Your actual position doesnt changed, as evidenced by the scanner and your relation to the other bodies.
Finally, I've never gotten the green glow in the belt itself yet. I suspect I'm in the wrong sector. But having run out of fuel, and being refueled by the Search + Rescue ship (never knew that was a thing...) I had to dock, at Titan station near Saturn. On exit from the station, after a few seconds I got the green glow. I circled around the station trying to repeat it, but no luck. Normally I wouldn't have noticed it if I was primed.
Hi, i asked frontier about the star sol constantly scanning, finishing and restarting. The reply seems it may be a bug.
I pointed out about 10 posts ago that the first video taken by Spliffz is about the strongest I've seen the glow. he was only about 1100 ls from Sol, heading away from Sol towards Jupiter, & quite a way above the plane of the belt. So yes, outside the belt! (Unless it’s much thicker in-game than IRL?)Ok. Ya i like this - honestly i think ive seen the green flash in the past but cant for the life of me remember the situation. I think later this eve or so I will go find a place in a different system where alot of signal sources pop up and see if i can recreate it there. I am thinking the flash is associated with a signal source popping up close to you ... or something like that. Or maybe its the coffee machine letting you know its ready...
