4.0 | Now Live

I'm not sure I understand, but if it is real world politics, I think that's out of our hands.
Actually, that's why I clarified that there are no complaints about the Frontiers. But for my friends and me, the question of how to live in different Universes further is acute). Those. either we go to 3.8 and stay there until...(?), or we wait until we get a chance to play 4.0 together

Some don't care about open being split on PC for sure, and a significant number of players did not stop playing when Ody launched either. But the detriment to multiplayer (in particular open mode) was one more thing attriting player numbers. The situation now is that we go from 2 open play instances that I can access, with a smaller post-May 2021 player population to occupy them (already "bad"), to three, one of which I cannot access. I use 3.8 for VR, pancake with Ody. This change will reduce the likelihood of player encounters in 3.8. That's the detriment for me personally (and I'm not covering any of the positives that come with H4.0 more generally). It's not a matter of the pennies I'd have to spend to access Horizons 4.0. It'd be a whole new CMDR I'd have to work up for very little reason (or indeed the grand or so I'll need to spend for VR to be usable in Ody so I can leave Horizons behind altogether). I'm not losing my ship over the whole thing here, it's just I want to clarify, and make clear that it's not something to dismiss out of hand, if you care about open mode multiplayer (I'm not saying you do, but I think FD should).
If you care about open mode multiplayer you should probably encourage people to buy Odyssey.

Technically we don't, if we're sticking with 3.8. Frontier has made the 4.0 download optional 🤗

I didn't even see Steam update the launcher - it just loaded as normal with a new "Install 4.0" option. I jumped right into 3.8 with no downloads, no delays, no server issues - all good!

Don't know what are you speaking about. Steam started updating. Just in case anyone needs to know update size. Unfortunately my current network has very limited download speed :(

Heh, Odyssey people being fussed they didnt gain anything with the current release instead of being happy for Horizons people getting to enjoy the current narrative 😂

Well, look at the glass half full - we didnt actually lost anything and nothing changed for an Odyssey player with the current release.

I'm not sure I understand this very well.
You seem to me missing the point that now 3.8 isn't a thing supported anymore, and that it's just there to not alienate the vr ship driver (There's probably more than this, but idk)
As I understand it, any new future narrative update will happen on Horizon 4.0. 3.8 Is just a relic of the past
Where lies the problem?

Once again to confirm. These are the options that will be available to you, following the update, via the Elite Dangerous Launcher:

Odyssey Players (players who have purchased Odyssey):

  • Elite Dangerous: Odyssey
  • Elite Dangerous: Horizons (3.8)
  • Elite Dangerous (Base Game - pre Horizons)
Horizons Players (players who have not purchased Odyssey):
  • Elite Dangerous: Horizons (4.0)
  • Elite Dangerous: Horizons < This is 3.8
  • Elite Dangerous (Base Game - pre Horizons)
(Arena and Combat Training will remain for both).
That's the time when you think FDev made the worst choice introducing Horizons 4.0 game mode and now they just made it even worse not letting Odyssey owners (who technicaly owns Horizons) to run it. Who does the marketing at Fronteers? Do they ruin the company reputation?

Kinda except I play Odyssey and Horizons, because I use VR and VR is terrible in Odyssey for me. So I use Horizons 3.8 for most of my in ship narartive and gamplay, simply because VR performance is that much better in Horizons 3.8 compared to Odyssey 4.0.

But now all narative is being removed from the VR version of Elite. (H3.8). Maybe H4.0 works well in VR ? I wont know because I bought Odyssey so that means I cannot try H4.0.

You typed:
2: As such, Odyssey players aren't able to downgrade to Horizon like they used to.
which is wrong, because Odyssey players can downgrade to Horizons like they used to.

Reasons for Odyssey players temporariiy downgrading to Horizons v3.8:
  • Material Farming at POIs which you can't do in Codebase 4.0 anyway
  • The once in a lifetime SRV getting stuck situation, v3.8 is going to be just fine for that going forward
  • Some claim to do it to instance with friends, this option hasnt changed either as both player sets can still switch to Horizons 3.8, but the concern is in future some sort of funky Codebase 4.0 only content to share together will force the friend to upgrade to Odyssey...

this last point could explain this decision as a marketing/business ploy.

I actually think there could be other content issues around shared instancing in Codebase 4.0, say there is new planetside content planned, with shared instancing you are basically giving away said content for free to those using Horizons 4.0 unless you restrict that content to the planets with thin atmospheres which only Odyssey players can access or locking content inside buildings only accessible on foot, which all maybe too restrictive. There was a similar big question when the Codebase 4.0 merge was first mentioned, do Horizons (4.0) players see the Settlements and NPCs walking about? If so can they join in any battles there in their SRV? But by keeping the instancing separate between Horizons (4.0) and Odyssey it gives them far greater flexibilty on how they release new content in future, if say they want something to be Odyssey exclusive to attract new customers to the DLC then instancing segregation creates natural content gating which would remove a big headache when planning production development for new content.

Do you really not see the problem ?
With this update, Odyssey players will no longer be able to experience new content on Horizon with their Horizon team mates like they used to prior to update 13.
To make this short: Odyssey players will no longer be able to play updated Horizon 4.0. And they can't just experience new narrtive, because apparently some stuff will be exclusive to Horizon 4.0 (Like the stargoids and such). Apparently Horizon 3.8 doesn't even have the hyper agressive thargs

Yes they all can as it was before - H 3.8.
H-4 is a gift, not intended to boost your cooperative gaming.

Why would it?
It's the same codebase as Odyssey so it should have the same performance levels

And probably the same download size... i will confirm it soon, but based on how long it takes it seems to be Odyssey like size

Pretty sure that's what the price of EDH should be on Xbox and PS now. No way am I paying full price for a game not receiving further content or updates. I honestly am not sure if they're just screwing with us or think we're idiots...or both.

This "the concern is in future some sort of funky Codebase 4.0 only content".

The last point makes sense. Botched marketing attempt at making Horizon player nudge towards Odyssey
But I still don't understand your blurb about instancing.

Edit: Regarding shared instancing: They made it clear they weren't willing/Unable/Didn't want that to happen for XYZ reason. Without official communication there's only just speculation.
