4.0 | Now Live

This is how my recently moved XB>PC Commander (No Odyssey) Install looks 👇

It is screaming Odyssey!
So again, why would you expect better VR performance in Horizons 4.0 than what already you can get in Odyssey?
They're the same codebase after all
So Again... I said maybe. I didnt say I expect.
I tried it on my Epic alt and Hor4.0 is just as disgustingly bad in VR as Odyssey is, when compared to Horizons 3.8.
So the maybe was a no :)

O well "maybe" now they can get 4.0 working, fingers crossed.

EDH 4.0 would not require another download. It's the same client you have already installed. All it needs is a launcher entry with the SeasonTwo option.
Maybe, though we don't know that yet. Have you tried to verify this?
I have just verified that if I launch the EDO executable with the SeasonTwo option, friends who play EDH3 show as “ED: Beyond” and those who play EDO show as “ED: Odyssey”.

Now all I need is for someone who plays EDH4 to FR me :) In case anyone is interested in doing a test, my CMDR name is “Sampi Ogonek” and I’m going to be playing EDO for the next hour or so. [EDIT: the window has passed now.]

While it's possible for this to be some weird tactic to increase Odyssey sales...it would be weird. I think it's more likely that Frontier just didn't really consider instancing at all. The focus of the previous announcements was almost entirely on the narrative, with instancing being a footnote that had to be clarified. And clearly not enough - but then why would people ask if the DLC owners would get something the non-DLC owners would? Especially with "Horizons" having been rolled into the base purchase, so all players have access to it - except now, apparently, those who paid extra don't have access to everything with the Horizons name.

It just wasn't thought about, I doubt Frontier have run into this issue themselves in whatever limited and structured playtesting they do. "Why would Odyssey players need Horizons 4.0? They already have 4.0 access through Odyssey!"

Hopefully, that would mean it's easy to fix. Give it a bit of time for meetings and then give Odyssey owners the same launcher entry everyone else has that enables Horizons-mode of the Odyssey build. If this doesn't happen, well, I guess that'd mean Frontier really don't care much about instancing, which isn't that farfetched.

even the same folder name

Those settlements don't exist in Horizons mode
Odyssey settlements do exist in Horizons mode - I just tested on an alt that owns only Horizons. All of the ones I've visited were powered down, although I'm not sure if that's because of Horizons mode, or just luck. I also visited a settlement in conflict and there were no NPCs (ships or foot soldiers).
EDIT: I found a settlement that was powered up - but it still had no NPCs.

OK, so I have 3 accounts, main and 2 alts, the main has Odyssey. I didn't get the option to upgrade Horizons on my main, but I did get an Odyssey upgrade.

Which didn't seem to do anything... to Odyssey. But now my main Horizons account is apparently an "Odyssey compatibility version" of 3.8 (but NOT 4.0).

...Um, what just happened?

Meanwhile I'm downloading 4.0 on one of the alts, looks like it will take awhile. I wonder if it will smuggle an update into Horizons 3.8 on that account too?

ETA: I suppose it's possible that my 3.8 was already the "Odyssey compatibility" version, and I just hadn't noticed. I'm reluctant to fire up any version while the download is happening though, so I can't check. Will look closely at the Horizons 3.8 version when this is finished, and also check the as-yet-not-upgraded alt.

But now my main Horizons account
Is this the same account that has Odyssey? If so that account can't access Horizons 4.0 as has been well established throughout this thread.

Yes it was, because the name of the 3.8 update series is Odyssey Compatibility Update, ever since it first released in May last year.

Those settlements don't exist in Horizons mode, otherwise it would be possible to drive a SRV through them and massacre all the on-foot NPCs. The PEGI rating doesn't allow that.
The EDO settlement absolutely DO exist in EDH4.0, and you can land at them, and drive around them. You can even see inside the buildings. There just aren't any npcs walking about, and you cant get out on foot.

(beaten to it by Drinkybird :) )

This release is a courtesy and free upgrade for non-Odyssey owners. They now get to try the 4.0 codebase with all the perks that contains as well as engage with future content and narrative updates at no additional cost where this wasn't possible before. Of course, we still hope they will upgrade to Odyssey for the full experience the game has to offer.
"yo bitten fruit company, why don't you add this super cool feature for those who already paid for your services so they can message their friends who didn't pay, in better ways?"
"just buy your friend a bitten fruit phone!"

you can't make this up, i swear to god.

so if i didn't had puchased odyssey i could instance with friends on H4.0 and see how's the performance, but since i paid for the expansion i can't, so i have to fully disregard the whole DLC going back to 3.8 to instance with friends, and if these friends like 4.0 but odyssey content(or the lack of fps, either gameplay or numbers) doesn't appeal to them, i have to ask them to go back to 3.8 everytime we want to do something together, as before.

Mildly confused - there's no patch-note-worthy changes going on here aside from instancing and codebase setup?

We no longer sell Horizons as a separate package. A while back it was rolled into the base game so that anyone who buys Elite Dangerous today automatically has the ability to land on planets and other things that were originally exclusive to the Horizons DLC. Therefore "Horizons" is now effectively synonymous with "base game".

4.0 Horizons or ("4.0 base game" if you will) is now being offered to players on PC who don't own Odyssey so they can try out that version of the codebase.
Hi Bruce, thank you for confirming that Horizons 4.0 is merely just a cash grab from someone higher up, so much for your comments earlier this year about wanting Horizons and Odyssey folk to be able to play together.... Whoever's decision this is, has taken all the good reputation that Fdev has built over the last 2 months, and completely thrown it in the bin.

Seems pretty backwards to not let Odyssey and Horizons 4 players instance, yet say "look at the new multi crew you can all do!" when I'm just going to have to go back to 3.8 to play with a friend anyway...

Interesting. I wonder what the performance is like.. say at one of those large extraction settlements in EDH4 with no NPCs, vs the same settlement in EDO4 with NPCs walking around.

Yes, they do continue to impress, in the lowest sense.

I have so many questions. Well, three.
1. Will I need to set up my HOTAS again?
2. If no, yay. If yes, can I copy my existing config file from Horizons 3.8 and they will just work?
3. Can I delete 3.8 from my machine?

I dont care.
However, FDev might care about it.
And they may block any possibility of instancing between owners of a PEGI7 title and the owners of a PEGI16 title.

Guess what. That's what they're doing.
I've said it before, I'll say it again: Have a new separate EULA for H4.0 with PEGI 16 rating. Make the acceptance of that mandatory on first launch of 4.0. Don't accept ? Play 3.8. Of course the can has been opened by now, H4.0 is playable, people are playing it and would not take kindly to it being taken away again. FDEV missed the opportunity, and for that they now have to face the anger of the Odyssey players. It's solely their fault.
