4.0 | Now Live

Yes ... I have multiple standalone accounts only one of which has Odyssey and i can log out of the FDev launcher from the Odyssey account, then log in with a Horizons account, and launch right into EDH 4.0
And what do you have installed on the harddisk and how many gigabytes?
I use linux and i use the same install for both my pc commander and my newly transferred commander. One uses steam and the other uses lutris, but the same folder. My lutris commander didn't have to download any seperate EDH 4.0 to be able to play. The Elite folder is 75.2 GB

Its bloody ridiculous!
Just have one single game.
3?
No wonder nothing is getting fixed.! It's daft!
While I agree with you, I also disagree. Yes, ideally there would just be one game with a proper DLC. But Odyssey really and truly is not a DLC, it's an entirely separate game, quite literally. With that in mind, I think that's how it should be sold. If you want Horizons (no 4.0, just 3.8), buy that for cheap. If you want Odyssey, buy that for more (Horizons not required). Two separate games, like X3 and X4 (albeit with a shared BGS).

The problem is that Frontier continues to sell Odyssey as a DLC, requiring people to buy Horizons first, and this is why they have this mess on their hands and why people are confused, demanding cross-instancing and everything else. Frontier would not even need Horizons 4.0 if Odyssey was sold as a separate, independent game, "This is where our focus is now" game and Horizons was sold as "last year's game", supported but not expanded. It happens all the time in other games - Call of Duty, Battlefield, the aforementioned X3 vs X4, etc.

You really think I'm making this up, don't you?

You can refresh your memory by clicking this magic link: Odyssey and Horizons compatibility

I'm no longer willing to accept that Frontier keeps altering the deal. The product I paid for is available now, and I want full access to it.
We know instancing has changed, they promised they would bring the two back together, and that hasn't happened.

But you didn't buy Horizons 4.0 no matter how many times you want to claim you did. You bought Odyssey.

Also, what that roadmap ACTUALLY says is the horizons and odyssey players instancing together was to come "After Console Release". Which didn't happen.

Good grief, things changed.

I can't up vote this response enough.

Elite-dangerous-64 is 21.7gb and Elite-dangerous-odyssey-64 is a round 50gb
Thanks, that confirms that Horizons 4.0 is actually Odyssey. Then it does seem very weird that there is no Horizon 4.0 launcher option for Odyssey players..! Maybe someone can try the command line trick on the Odyssey client to see if they can instance with Horizons 4.0 players.

No, but someone needs to point me to where buying an fdev product included the promise of Horizons 4.0.

People who bought Odyssey were buying ... Odyssey. They weren't buying Horizons 4.0, it didn't exist as a thing before very recently, or am I missing something?
You really don't get the real point here, do you ? I at least was looking forward to the unification of the code base ending the split in the playerbase. In an ideal scenario I could just launch Odyssey and instance with Horizons 4.0 players in space. Since that doesn't work, the next best thing would be me as an Odyssey owner getting the choice to launch my Odyssey client in Horizons mode to be able to play with Horizons 4.0 players. Not perfect, but still better what we have now: Both having to go back down to Horizons 3.8 to play together.

Except the other half of the player base.
This is where you are wrong. I'm quite confident that half the player base will not be playing Horizons 4.0. Based on my observations, more than half of the player base already has moved to Odyssey. Most of us who haven't rather play Horizons 3.8. If I wanted what H 4.0 offers, I would have already bought Odyssey. Now I will someday try H4, because it's free, so why not, and maybe by some miracle it will run flawlessly on my PC and I'll be wowed enough to go ahead and buy Odyssey. Or not, in which case I'll go back to 3.8. In other words, I'm not going to just live the rest of my days in H4.

The one big variable is the new player who downloads Horizons for the first time next week. I think Frontier has created a confusing mess for new players being introduced to the game for the first time (look how confused many veteran players are). See my last post for my full opinion regarding this.

Since people are a bit confused about which version of the game corresponds to which set of files, here's a quick breakdown.
In the Elite Dangerous\Products directory, there are two subdirectories:
  • elite-dangerous-64 (around 19.8GB, these are the files for 3.8)
  • elite-dangerous-odyssey-64 (around 50GB, these are the files for 4.0)

This is what gets executed for the various options in the launcher:
  • Elite Dangerous (the base game with no expansions) : elite-dangerous-64/EliteDangerous64.exe with the "SeasonOne" argument
  • Arena: elite-dangerous-64/EliteDangerous64.exe with the "CQCArena" argument
  • Horizons 3.8: elite-dangerous-64/EliteDangerous64.exe with no arguments
  • Horizons 4.0: elite-dangerous-odyssey-64/EliteDangerous64.exe with the "SeasonTwo" argument
  • Odyssey: elite-dangerous-odyssey-64/EliteDangerous64.exe with no arguments

So having both Horizons 4.0 and Odyssey available would not add any extra files to the installation, they're all there already.

Especially as there's aspects on there that were or are TBC. If that doesn't tell you there's significant challenges with integrating aspects of odyssey and horizons together, I don't know what else you could say.
There are no challenges any more. The promised product is available now. It's already installed on our hard disks! Odyssey owners are just being denied access to it, despite the fact that we paid for it. There is no excuse for this.

I was hoping that at some point me (Odyssey owner) would be able to play with some friends (Horizon owners only) together in one 4.0 instance, i.e. mate driving SRV but not being able to leave it like I can do (yes, I realize, that it is not THAT easy).

i still think it is mostly related to PEGI rating
For example: PEGI7 allows very mild forms of violence (implied, non-detailed, or non-realistic violence) - hence kids can blow up ships

but this (emphasis is mine) 👇

The EDO settlement absolutely DO exist in EDH4.0, and you can land at them, and drive around them. You can even see inside the buildings. There just aren't any npcs walking about, and you cant get out on foot.

(beaten to it by Drinkybird :) )

Now, i always considered player to player interactions regarding PEGI7 vs PEGI16, but Horizons not seeing any on-foot NPC make even more sense and leads me to believe that PEGI rating is the main thing that prevents instancing between Horizons and Odyssey

Shooting (or running over with the srv) NPC's is quite detailed and realistic violence.
Especially the ragdoll postures of the dead NPC can be quite disturbing at times.

Another patch this morning. Now, whenever I try to access the crotch panel, I get a CTD.
Same here, it worked fine yesterday. The other three panels work fine, but as soon as you try to go to that lower console it crashes to desktop every damn time. Tried clearing the shader cache and verifying all the files through steam and the launcher, nothing seems to be working. I got to play odyssey for exactly one day before getting screwed by an update, after being screwed by the newer AMD drivers yesterday when I bought it. Fun times. I love Elite, but this is a bit much. May as well go back to xbox if I can't ever play odyssey anyway.

you may want to sue them for canceling the Console port too...
go get them tiger.

again, you have not payed for Horizons 4.0
And this isn't a hill to die climbing.

You just assumed you will get Horizons 4.0 and you dont want to accept that was a baseless assumption (one that i've made it myself)
