I've never like being in the SRV. It always made me sick to my stomach.
Since getting my RTX 3060 Ti and being able to run the game maxed out with solid frame rates it's not nearly as bad, but it still gets me a bit on really hilly / rocky planets.

The Planetary Circumnavigation Club
Having just completed my own circumnavigation of a small moon in an SRV I decided to do a little bit of research and have come across enough other people crazy enough to perform this right of passage that I thought I'd create a new thread to celebrate their achievements. If you too have driven...
Though, circumnavigating a stellar body might at this point of time a more suitable pasttime...
It can be hard if you drive at unsafe speeds, that is right.
It can be a lot of fun if you get it right, though...
I find that getting it right, for me, means using the pitch axis on the joystick as the throttle, with yaw axis for steering and roll for roll...flying the Scarab is much better than just driving it...
I've done some base jumping into a canyon on some distant body in Horizons. IIRC my height was 4km or so and I lived...barely...

Oh, and @CMDRQuainMarln : could you quantify those "several km"? 2 km is relatively easy to do - but if you want to attempt double figures (or actually reach orbit), then you need to very carefully select your planet for both low g and powerful geysers.
Well at least that won’t land you at the rebuy screen.Luckily, this didn't happen to me yet. But I more than once woke up to the sounds of my ship rapidly speeding up while approaching a station/planet in SC... Fell asleep right in the moment when I wanted to activate the SCA...
This time, though, I fell asleep in the forums.
There is a racing type challenge from one of the other racing groups in the game, it involves departing from a station dock flying a figure 8 type route through and round the station and getting back into the dock.A different experience for everyone, even with supposedly standardized features. I'm loving it.
Quite at the beginning of my journey, I had a situation where it seemed like the computer would attempt to do that. Scared the crap out of me - just had tried this once before, flying manually around the station, which rotated way too fast for my flying skills...
There is also the one where you enter the dock without permission turn round exit again and get clear before the station starts shooting.
You may be overestimating their sanity.
I am in some awe of those that can do this as my skills with an SRV and patience with driving are too limited for the task.

SRV racing has been a big thing in Elite: Dangerous for a very long time and something I'm especially interesting in.
There are some standing time trial challenges that are still open for people wanting to give them a go. Somebody already mentioned the Cortes Base Drag Strip Challenge which is a nice short one. THE big one and the one I still consider to be the ultimate SRV challenge is the Pomeche Ridge Challenge which I run and continue to maintain a leaderboard for. Here's an example of one of my better runs to give you a taste of what that's like.

Live SRV racing was also a big part of what the SRV Racers were doing pre-Odyssey but alas the terrain changes (and general performance issues) that came with Odyssey sadly rather killed that community. The person who took the presentation of this to true eSport levels (with incredible live telemetry, commentary and camera work) was BlackMaze.

Sadly he left Elite after the Odyssey launch and has now taken his talents across to the Star Citizen XGR Racing group which has full support from CIG to the extent that they've even added in game assets to support what that racing community are doing?

)Having raced quite a few racing games (mostly arcade) over the years - even the (as far as I know) first RacingMMO - and a long-time player of space-related MMOs, combining those two genres would be a drem come true.
Well, as I am limited to 3.8 myself, this suits me quite well. But, being quite fresh to the game, I will need some more training to be able to compete.
Thanks for taking your time to give me a brief rundown of the history of SRV racing in Elite Dangerous.

I always refer people to this little infographic as well ..

I remember a video of an SRV doing a seemingly impossible set of jumps up mountains. It was, honestly, quite something to watch. I'll have to see if I can find it.

I found this lovely spot full of volcanic activity. There were many crystalline structures giving out high grade materials, most of which I've already gathered. But I got some Mercury, which I still had room for.

Thanks for the Srv flying info and links @Alec Turner . Like others I just mosey or half crash along in the SRV currently. I want to check out those links and videos and learn to 'fly' the SRV.
