AMD RX 6000 series driver issues & workarounds

Confirmation:

Well, Perhaps some good news for VR users...

I have installed the latest AMD driver, version 23.7.1 Win10-Win11 July 6, and it seems to work well with my RX6950XT. Although the orbit lines are still broken, when viewed horizontally in my Vive VR headset, I find that I am now able to touch down my ship on landable bodies. Initially, all looks good as far as the rendering of planetary surfaces goes. I intend to do more testing later tonight but I'm hopefull with what I have seen so far.

Maybe now, I can look forward to no longer having to use that old, outdated, 22.5.1 driver that has been on my system for over a year; and which has recently been causing more and more crashes to desktop.

The new 23.7.1 driver shows great promise... Perhaps other VR users would like to give it a try.

Hello folks
I have a bit of a weird issue with my RX 6800. I hadn't updated my drivers in a long time, not since 22.11.2 when they fixed the planet terrain issue. I have upgraded to 23.7.1 and now I have awful screen tearing regardless of whether I use adaptive sync, freesync premium or limit the game to 144fps (I have a 144hz monitor with freesync premium).

The strangest part is that if I go to an Odyssey settlement my FPS immediately drops down to 45 and won't come back up from there even if I go back into space. Before changing my drivers I would usually get locked 144fps in space and 80-90 in stations, and no screen tearing. The lowest I would get would be certain varieties of Odyssey settlements during conflict zones, I would get 60fps. Nothing about my system has changed aside from the drivers.

I tried using DDU to completely wipe and reinstall the drivers but the issue persists.

I also tried to roll back to the previous system restore point from before I upgraded my drivers, but it causes the AMD control panel to throw a wobbly because of a mismatch between versions.

I can't seem to find old drivers on the AMD website to revert back to 22.11.2. It only shows the latest versions for me.

Any ideas?

Highly unlikely to be an issue with the drivers themselves.

I'd disconnect from your network, run the AMD Cleanup Utility, reinstall the newest drivers, then reconnect to your network. Make sure your display/monitor settings are correct, delete the contents of game's display option directory ("%LocalAppData%\Frontier Developments\Elite Dangerous\Options\Graphics\" or there abouts), and verify the game files with the launcher before starting the game up and reconfiguring all display/graphics options and restarting the game again.

I also tried to roll back to the previous system restore point from before I upgraded my drivers, but it causes the AMD control panel to throw a wobbly because of a mismatch between versions.

System restore is not a replacement for system backups and can result in incomplete restorations. Personally, I make regular backups and disable system restore.

Click the 'previous versions' link near the bottom of the page...

I think you should try the current drivers again first, as there is no guarantee reverting will address the issue you're experiencing.

So, from what I read above, the newest drivers seemed to have fixed the issues except the orbit lines in the RX 6000 series? Also, are there also issues with the 7000 series?
Thanks

The seemed to have fixed the remaining issues with the 7000 series as well, aside from the orbit lines.

Sidenote had fun today... Driver updates are fun, not.

AMD driver 23.9.1 with New features out...
Will not install. failed big failure popup Saying " yea this is totaly smegged go read the internet..." found out why, (Because windows 10 update) Why the smeg cant the driver software say we need windows 10 update first. We can't install.

It smegged the install but also while removing the AMD AE software install, So its nuked the applacation/downloader and installer so I go get the manual exe.
windows update which clashed with the AMD updater, then currupts writing the windows install so that needs a fix on reboot.
Argh And yes the "new" features are only on the FULL bloated install Not the minimum version So lol after the minimum install is done have to repeat another install with Full selected...
This was a fun day.
What next NMS going to zero out save game Due to new bugs for Exp 11... sigh..,

Having issues Even before I can get to the games.

I can't make much sense of what you are saying.
Are you still on windows 10? You should always keep your os updated.
Did you use a drivercleaner?
Anyway, no problems here.

System restore is not a replacement for system backups and can result in incomplete restorations. Personally, I make regular backups and disable system restore.
I have a pair of mirrored backup drives to which I do a full system image of every single system on my home network once a month, or any time I am about to try any kind of major update. It's saved me a LOT of hassle, and these days with gen4 NVMe drives, it's honestly worth doing even before things like a driver update with how fast the backup and restore process completes. If I start getting issues with a new driver it takes just a couple of minutes to restore the image to the system's main drive.

Oh believe me, there are plenty good reasons folks stick with 10. Particularly power users who know what they're doing and want efficiency and fine control over their system's functions.
As soon as Windows 10 ceases to be viable I am 100% aboard the linux train unless MS manage a serious 180 degree turnabout with 12 from their atrocious UX decisions with 11. It wouldn't be my choice, as I prefer how easy certain things are in pre-11 windows, but at the end of the day it will let me pick a desktop environment that closest resembles what works well for me, and usability comes first, if it's a choice between operating systems.

Hiya chaps, am looking to get a new radeon GPU. Is this still an issue in the game or has it been patched out? Thanks in advance.
My 7900XTX has had no issues in the last few driver releases - including getting rid of the EDO folded landable atmo bodies in VR. Orbit lines are no longer dashes...
I don't know if the 6000 series can report the same.

my game keeps crashing near planet surfaces
new PC: AMD 7800 3XD CPU; 7900XTX GPU; 1000W PSU, 32GB RAM

it's a random short freeze, followed by a CTD.
anybody got a solution for it?

Probably not an issue caused by the drivers themselves.

I know your issue was two months ago at this point, but standard diagnostic steps are to verify the game files with the launcher, delete GPUWorkTable.xml from the main game directory, and clear the driver/Windows shader cache.
