Chieftain Size and perhaps other specs

From some pics, it seems like it'll have an excellent cockpit

Look at that: The pilot is so forward that (s)he has no blindspots.
Also, from the scale of the dashboard in the said cockpit, and the relative size of the cockpit compared tot he ship itself, it indeed seems like it'll be more of a Federal dropship sized-ship

Do the engine nacelles swivel? Super-maneuverable medium ship with 6 medium hardpoints and restricted anti-Thargoid utility slots could be interesting.

I created this image after seeing various estimates of how big folks thought the Chieftain was.

I realised this could be done by using the human scale reference in some of the scale images.
What I didn't realise when making it was actually how small the Chieftain really is.
I think the Chieftain has the largest cockpit size to number of human ratio on any ship.
It seems to be not much larger than a keelback and would fit comfortably in the dimensions of an Asp explorer.
What most interesting about it is that it is shown as a 3 person ship. Only time will tell if that is true.

What we can also tell from this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cfBn-NWh0z0

is that it seems that the Chieftain has 4 size 2 hardpoints on the top and 2 utility slots.

What else have you noticed?

Beseiger hazards that there are 9 utility slots and 6 hardpoints on the Chieftain of which the top 4 are large (2 assumed on the bottom) and thus the ship must be a large ship because no multicrew ship with this number of utility slots and hardpoints can be a medium ship.

While I understand the logic I disagree on some of his premises. I think the middle most utility slot is too large compared to the rest so it isn't a utility slot (so a total of 8)
And i think those 4 large hardpoints on the top are actually medium hardpoints.

And that there are medium ships with 6 or more hardpoints, such as the Asp or the Federal Gunship. (of varying weapon sizes)

What do you think?
That size reference is way out. Given the Python is a two seater side by side and the Chieften is a 3 man. That will put it in the large scale.

It closer to a Type 9 in size. Given that in game all large shios are three seaters..Medium are 2 and small are 1.

Given there is clearly three well spaced out seats. It makes zero sense for a small vessel to have a three man crew.It doesn't follow ED design philosophy where you have a turret crewmember and a fighter one.

The underside you can clearly see what is likely the large gun housing.

No offence but your scale is way out when you consider the Python cockpit is compact and the fact that all large ships are three crew.

I would love a ship around hte side of the dropship or gunship but we already have those, with 9 utility's and a crew of 3 that is clearly big 3 or soon to be big 4 territory

FYI the Corvette has more utility slots than it actually uses so you cant just go off that.

Some good deductions there Livvy.
Perhaps somewhere between what Besieger and you posit.

I think its larger than a Python, smaller than a 'Conda.

Just remember that ships need landing gear, so what people are assuming to be large hardpoint placements on the ships underside could actually be part of the landing gear structure.

I think its noticeable that the ship does not appear to have a fighter bay. This points to it not being that large.

Its also important to note that all ships have a standard cargo hatch. The location and scaling of which will provide proof of the ships actual size.

Looking at the pics to me it looks like the hatch is at the front of ship close to the cockpit, or right at the rear similar to FDL.

If its similar to FDL setup could it be a case of it having a huge gun like the FDL on the underside?

Here is keelback for scaling guide

Python cockpit is only as wide as the spine running down the ship... very narrow.

And yet it is.

As Gallileo once said when he recanted his beliefs of a heliocentric solar system in protest, "And yet it moves".

if you had a clearer image i think you'll find that hatch is a cargo hatch. (the one at the front right?)

I get it doesn't follow what came before but it is something new and my methodology for getting the scale of the ship, unless you've noticed a fault in it, isn't wrong.

You don't consider perspective. If the human figures are further in the back than directly at the front window, what they most likely are, they will appear smaller in scale compared to the canopy. As long as you cant measure the distance between the front of the ship and the humans, your measurement is useless.

As much as I would have liked the Chieftain to be very large, it's great to hear that Frontier are possibly moving away from ridiculously oversized canopies. If they were shrunk to similar dimensions on existing ships it would go a long way to fixing the tendency of ships in ED to look far smaller than they really are.

If its a large-sized ship, it would be the first in ED not to have a fighter bay.

The Clipper, Orca and T-7 all lack fighter bays.

My hope is it's slightly smaller than a Python. 4medium hp's and 2 large.
It looks maneuverable and pretty fast so I'd take smaller internals for good jump range, speed and said maneuverability.
Also hoping it sits in the price point void (for none rank grind ships) between the Vulture and the Python.
If the Alliance are gona be another grind I'll be irked but cope with it.
Or maybe Fdev will take an average of how many times and how long we've been allied with the Alliance factions and award players accordingly.

Ok, so there are two videos on youtube pprovided by FD with the new Krait (who's scale has been given somewhere) and the Chieftain. If you look at the chieftain at the 6 & 23 second mark, you can clearly see the pilot's chair's profile in the cockpit. Compare it to the size of the Krait's pilot's chair (in white, visible at around the 2 and 27 second mark) and while the scales and angles are different, you can see that the chair in the Chieftain's much "bigger" for the scale of the ship compared to the Krait's (which seems like it'll have one of the worst lateral line of sights ever)?

For what it's worth, The front end looks like a direct mod of the Keelback / T-6 front end.

So I'm kinda with Livvy in that this is a Medium ship.
