CMDR just wants to play.

#you said it bro.

tooltips - ever heard of those?

some players like to learn by themselves and enjoy the "I don't know what I'm doing but it's fun anyway!" feeling, others would prefer a bit of handholding.

tooltips on *waves hand clockwise*

tooltips off *waves hand counter-clockwise*

Head for the suggestions forum then. There are tooltips-ish in the Engineers screen to help with locating resources, I'm sure it would be possible to add more help in that manner at various points of the UI.

and once again can I just remind everyone that this game is rated PEGI 7 - so SEVEN YEAR OLD CHILDREN are allowed to play it - and parents might let them log into thier accounts.

If a game is rated at PEGI 7 - it should be designed to be accessible for the lowest factor of player - in this case a seven year old child.

RTFM and 179 pages isn't it, not by a million miles.

Not interested in the "average" age of the playerbase - PEGI 7 means PEGI 7, and if the game wasn't designed for PEGI 7, then get it re-rated.

And THAT is my underlying problem with this particular topic - you can't make a game that you want to reach as large a playerbase as you can legally manage (because the next rating below PEGI 7 is PEGI 3 (babies) and then make parts of it require adult levels of intelligence or well above average skills for a seven year old - like reading hundreds of pages in a manual.

but please, tell me I'm wrong, it'll be fun.

Well, on that you're wrong. PEGI refers to the theme and contents of the game, not the complexity of the game. To be fair, what with the slavery and space murder things, the game should possibly be PEGI 12.

Edit: Kerbal Space program, which does require at least a basic understanding of orbital mechanics, has a PEGI rating of 3. The original Lock On, a reasonably complex fighter jet simulator for which you'll need to at least glance over the manual, is rated 7. Call of Duty on the other hand is rated 18.

My sentiment, exactly.

And, dude, your new avatar is hilarious.

That's just to get to the subsection on bounties and other awarded credits. I mean, is there an official manual? The only one I know is the unofficial Codex found here: http://edcodex.info/?m=threads&entry=29
And it's 186 pages.

This is the link from the MANUAL button in your launcher.

Now a manual is not the best way of keeping up to date with ongoing changes and additions to the game, but at least the ED manual makes it relatively obvious which (main) features were added to the game by creating chapters for each Horizon update.

With all the justified criticism people might have with multicrew and the game in general, why did you pick one from someone who doesn't know how the game works? Simply visit interstellar factors (or whatever they are called now) and turn them all in...

Yeah... Really. What the heck?

Lucky there's this handy feature called "Ctrl-F", huh?

;)

Indeed, which doesn't change the fact that "why didn't you look in the 206 page manual?" is not a reasonable response. There's a "lack of handholding," and then there's just outright you, casual."

You're not supposed to censor yourself, naughty.

Personally, I like the steep learning curve that this game has to offer. It has been fun figuring everything out on my own (and from helpful posts on the forum, as well).

I did. I put an asterisk in the word. I self-censored, and the mods can see that if they check it.
Anyway, the learning curve doesn't bother me too much, but the tutorials don't cover as much as they should.

Sweet Jesus.
Go ahead and ban me mods but I got too.
You're a stupid *** Coloratura. In a long line of idiotic whinebags that this forum produces.
Sorry to most everyone else. Just had to get that out.
You should probably take a break from the game if this is your reaction to a criticism that isn't even aimed in your direction.

"Reading's hard"

Reading isn't hard. Expecting everyone to know where everything is, and treating them poorly for not knowing, isn't reasonable, however.

From the manual, Page 179:

They don't tell you ingame because they are shady subjects and not exactly legal.

It hearkens back to the old pc gaming days where part of the fun was in reading the material or attached material and looking for clues and tips.
I think FFE or the Frontier manual even had sections describing certain star systems and some interesting tips or details about them.

OP I feel your pain, my brother recently spent several days staying with us, he watched me effortlessly play elite and naturally it looked great to him, because I know exactly what I'm doing. He wanted to install it, I was reticent. He isnt a gamer. He plays games, but he's never been one to invest (time wise), and I told him... This game is not for everyone, it's not even for some, it's for the masochistic few. He was like yeh, all the good games are like that... And I said... Yeeeees. But elite is something else. You'll see. Suffice it to say he didn't stick with it.

I don't know who to blame. Do we blame the instant gratification nation, or frontier? The truth is somewhere in the middle. People do want things handed out to them rather than having to go hunting these days, combined with the fact that frontier seems to actually promote the opposite model, creates a very strong clash of style.

I don't know what to tell you. As Conch pointed out, some of your concerns are simply because you don't know about all the mechanisms available, and honestly, how would you? Perhaps THAT is the problem after all, proliferation of information.

Perfect example of FD making a game they want US to play not the game WE want to play.

FD - taking how to act like a government lessons. Not surprising, though - that's the thing to do these days.

Eh, maybe. A physical manual was great to have because it represented a tangible aspect of the game. The world was virtual, but that thick game manual told you that this world had weight, that it had heft. You could read it anywhere, and everywhere, soaking up the information so that when you had the chance to play again, you could wow others with what you'd learned. Of course, that was back in the day where games usually came on floppy disks, and playing online was a futuristic concept no one had yet dared to try in large numbers. Having a more comprehensive tutorial would be better for new players, while having a physical manual* would be great for those of us who prefer not to have to wade through 100+ pages in a PDF that also contain video links. It's just not the same.

*I would gladly pay for an official manual in book format from FDev.

I think he is saying that other new games don't have the same problems Elite has...
PS
Which is:
1. Not true, many games get released very buggy and unfinished.
2. No surprise because Elite is under constant Development.

1. True -because gamers are p.ussies and accept crap without complaint - bolstered by fanbois and apologists!
2. Which after 3 *&^%$# YEARS should just plain be totally unacceptable.

Lucky for us the greatest generation didn't accept the unacceptable or we'e all be speaking German and Japanese. What a bunch of p.ussies we've become!

There's a MANUAL!??!?!

Well - that's what they call it anyway...

OMG, I can so relate to this. I must me one of those. The game doesn't bore me, I don't complain about the Thargoids, CGs and stuff. The Ganyness of some missions bugs me but not enough for me to whine about it.

In short, I love this game warts and all!

Me too!

But the warts can get really, really annoying and they do make it hard to get l.aid!

You are the reason that todays games suck. Thanks. Not.

A pointless thread with 3 pages of replies!

(Oh shoot, I just added another! :D )

Actually...
Not pointless...
Especially if you're mostly drunk.

Then it becomes FUN!

They are a lot more complex today. It is the same in business apps. They are so much more complex and try to do so much more that they are much more unstable and harder to us to support (poor IT guy)

(Argh! another one!)

and the devs are so much more into making money and so less more into producing a great game.

NOT that I blame them!

Capitalism...

It's all about the money. S.crew the process. To h.ell with the product! As long as it makes money!

Got enough of it and you can rationalize anything!

...and breathe.

Calm down everyone, I am worried someone will burst a bloodvessel, or damage a keyboard from the violence with which they type.

Have a cup of tea, or other drink of choice, then be calm before you post. Don't rant, don't insult and don't antagonise.

Merry Christmas!
\

Burst a blood vessel????

What the H.ell! I got plenty of blood. Fortified by much wine. H.ell I think I'll just go ahead and burst two and then load up my python and head for the nearest Haz RES!

Yee HAH!

You're wrong.

Define - wrong...
