ANNOUNCEMENT Community Update (22/10)

I have the right knowledge to know that you cannot work on an expansion before correcting errors, does it seem logical enough?

It's an entirely logical point of view and the right way to work. But that doesn't mean it happens. It doesn't, far too often. Frontier are not the only software developer out there with this problem. Deadlines mean that features are released that are "good enough". When that has happened a dozen or more times you are left with lots of trivial bugs that keep mounting up. They are never enough to get the management's attention but the customers get more irritated. Finally they shout loud enough and then management take notice and realise that they have a buggy mess that they have to spend a significant development effort on.

It's like boiling lobsters. If you start with cold water and heat it slowly, then they never notice the water getting hotter until it kills them. (These days they're killed humanely first.)

Personally, I think it was Patch 2 that finally rubbed their noses in it. They expected that they could rush out many small fixes to placate the players. Instead those fixes broke the game. That will be when they realised that it was not bad luck that made the September release so difficult and when they started thinking that the foundations might not be stable enough for the new content.

The petition proved that there was significant support for them fixing bugs and the open letter and forum posts gave them reason to think that delaying fleet carriers would be an acceptable way to do it. They could have released fleet carriers on schedule but that would have two negative effects. They would have been just as buggy as the September release, which would further alienate their customers, and they would just add more code complexity and more bugs that they still had to fix before New Era.

Sounds like a monster-download incoming. And this with my crappy connection of 16 MBit/s.😭

If New Era is just Space Legs or Atmospheric planets, I'd expect about the same amount of code as, say, Planet Zoo. If they've got both of those and procedural cities, hold on to your hat.

Regarding "refreshing the codebase". I wonder how this will be implemented for those, who won't buy the DLC. I wonder how the game will behave with two simultaniously running codebases.

The simplest way that I can imagine is that everybody with the base Elite Dangerous game will be updated for free to Horizons. That allows them to drop support for the base Elite Dangerous game and keep their current two-tier support (ED/Horizons) but for Horizons/New Era.

Ha yeah "selective memory"? Did you read the material I sent you? https://elite-dangerous.fandom.com/wiki/Development_Plans
  • New Era updates were August 2018 and March 2019, please link this "end of 2018 New Era anouncement" that you read
  • There was no prior announcement about only fixing bugs in 2019, if so please link to it
  • In March 2019 it was said "we also have a smaller development team focused on adding to and improving the existing game between now and that time. This will take the form of regular game updates and development supported events "
  • The details of the Sept & Dec 2019 update features including ARX were revealed at Lavecon July 2019: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/threads/lavecon-2019-content-reveal.516705/
So yeah who is actually making poopoo up here?
further back in this same thread, I put it a statement from last year that literally said that this year your priorities were fc and ice worlds, look it up, it's a zack statement.
I have not said anything about the new era this year, it was clear to me at the time they said it, you are mixing everything, calm down and read the above instead of entering and answering the first thing that comes to mind

I was replying to this statement of yours, now you say you didnt mention anything about New Era and now you are saying that 2019 priority was FC and Ice Worlds yet just before you said it was bug fixing?!?!?!?:
yes and I remember that at the end of last year they commented on the new era and such, that they would concentrate this year on fixing bugs, the introduction of a store that was not in their plans

  1. Where is this quote from Zac that 2019 prorities are on Fleet Carriers and Ice Planets?
  2. Do you know what priority means?
  3. You are clearly a troll

When first hearing about FC's being delayed to work on bug fixes I was like well done devs you're doing the right thing now I've had time to digest it here comes the salt, if you guys did more beta testing most of these bugs wouldn't be a problem to begin with, as a result the more veteran of players are getting stiffed again of any real content. Salt over

Unhappy though some players might be with FD's changing priorities and unkept promises, which often entirely obscure their achievements with this game, everyone who has complained here must admit that all would be forgiven if 'The New Era' included Atmospheric Flight and Space Legs.

Literally the easiest way to do it would be the following:
Connection loss for whatever reason while in combat with another player (or even an NPC so Morbad's CMDR can be satisfied as well :) ) = pretty explosion rendered for the CMDR who remained in the instance, pretty rebuy screen displayed for the other player as soon as they come online the next time.

In-game lore-friendly explanation = "critical malfunction" thanks to Murphy's Law.

This would only be acceptable, if the same happens to any CMDR who attacks a non-wanted CMDR outside a CZ.

I wouldn't count on that. I can litterally hear those words:

"WHY Spacelegs? I didn't ask for that"
"Atmospheric Planets FLIGHT? I wanted to LAND on them"
"Fix your bloody mess of a game (again)"
"Again no content for ME (us)"
...
:sneaky:

Greetings Commanders,

First of all, we would like to take a moment to thank you all for the continued support and making Elite Dangerous the incredible, community driven, phenomenon that it is today.

We started our Elite Dangerous journey over 6 years ago and today hundreds of thousands of Commanders log in regularly to continue their epic space journey. From a personal perspective, joining the team shortly after the kickstarter, and being a part of this incredible community has truly been one of the most amazing highlights of my career. From in-person community meet ups, online community groups and jaw-dropping events, you have always inspired us with your passion and enthusiasm.

We wanted to take a moment to talk about a number of topics being discussed in the community and to be as open and transparent as possible. It’s a long read, so make sure you’re safely docked and comfortable before attempting to navigate this post. ;)

The things we’d like to go through include Chapter Four content and a little about a future beyond “Beyond”, as well as touching on the subject of “paid premium content” in 2018 for Lifetime Expansion Pass owners.

Let’s get started with Chapter Four content. As all of you know, our largest update of the year is in final development and will be available for players to get hands-on with in just a number of weeks (Some time in Q4).This will be the final update of 2018 and the Beyond season. The Beyond season was always something that we wanted to do in order to bring even more enhancements to the core experience of Elite and being able to dedicate a full development team (over 100 people!) for a full year of free content was specifically to gear ourselves up to support our long term vision for the game.
On a personal note, Squadrons is something I’m most excited by. Seeing our player groups grow and the stories they’ve created has been incredible and now being able to see them take that to the next level, formalize their groups in-game, TAG up and team up is something I’m really looking forward to.

There’s also a huge group of players who are most excited by the many new additions to exploration. I know from talking to so many of you online and in-person, this is a huge moment and the development team are working really hard to deliver new content and mechanics to give explorers that thrill of venturing out into the black. And then there’s even more with additions with significant mining enhancements, a full game visual upgrade and the Codex which all bring even more richness to the game experience and depth to the way people play. It’s certainly an update we’re all very excited to see the community explore.

We do have one exciting piece of news to share that to date, we have not shared with our community. A while ago, our development went from pre-production into full production on our next major milestone of Elite development.

What that means in the simplest terms is that the team are actively working on the next major landmark which takes us into our next era for Elite. We aren’t going to be ready to talk about or announce any details for quite a while yet, it is early in the development and there is still a long way to go, but I can say that this is something that will be scheduled to release a considerable time after the final update in the Beyond series. We will have more details on exactly what this means and how the era will roll out after the release of Beyond – Chapter Four, but this does mark some exciting next steps and a continued commitment to the long term vision for the game and our community.

Naturally, there will be community questions that might come up from this information. We aren’t going to be ready to talk about what method or model the content will be. What we can say is that it’s expected to be a major milestone in the history of Elite and will be paid content. Lifetime Expansion owners will obviously receive the content as part of their pass.

As part of pre-production, the team investigate all areas of the content and scope them out thoroughly. It’s important to take the time to be clear on what the vision for this is and how we imagine the content working. During this process, we have made a decision to adjust the focus of content that were previously planned for the Chapter Four update, adding some significant new gameplay, but it also means some other aspects will have to change. This means that some elements of content such as Ice Planets (which many of you will have seen some fantastic progress updates from LaveCon earlier this year) and Fleet Carriers for squadrons will not be coming as part of the Beyond – Chapter Four update. Some of the technology from the ice planets specifically will be used within our wider and global visual upgrade, so there will still be general improvements, but not everything we originally envisaged. However, we wanted you to be aware that these two elements specifically would be reprioritised out of the upcoming Beyond - Chapter Four update. What this does mean is that the rest of the content will be able to benefit for the changes in scheduling through deeper and richer gameplay mechanics. The Chapter Four update still has the same, if not bigger scope and continues to promise the largest update of the Beyond season and a truck load of great features for all Horizons Commanders for free. We’re very excited to be sharing the details with you over the coming weeks, so stay tuned for more info.

Another area that we’ve had a number of questions on is the “premium content” coming in 2018.

As many of you will know, we previously mentioned that premium (paid for) content would also be coming within the Beyond season of updates and that Lifetime Expansion Pass holders would be getting this for free. However, as we went through the early stages of what the next era for Elite Dangerous would be, we decided that it would be better to spend that additional time on the future content, rather than bringing new types of purchasable content out this year.

This is a big positive for the long term future of the game and its content. However, we also understand that there are people with Lifetime Expansion Passes who haven’t received paid for content in this season, because Beyond has been free to all owners of Horizons. We truly appreciate the support and commitment that those owners put in us when they purchased the LEP and we will be making sure that there is a form of free store content going out to them by the end of this year.

The most important thing we would like for our community to take from this, is that there are some incredibly exciting things just over the horizon. The Elite Dangerous development team is larger than it has been at any point in the last 6 years. It is thanks to your continued support, dedication, feedback and engagement that has made this possible. We have the Beyond Chapter Four update coming soon, our largest update in the Beyond season, with some awesome headline features and a fantastically promising future of content and ongoing development. We’re looking forward to sharing more details with you in the future. However, if you have any questions feel free to share them with us by posting in this thread and we’ll try and answer as many of them as we can.

Thanks
but do you know how to read? I said that I read what they said about the new era, that it would be in 2020, and that I agreed with that, sane person, I was referring rather to the 2019 plans, just what it says here, dense people like you who don't even understand really bother me.

Tell me what I'm lying or that I'm a troll, sane person

Would be seperate DLC though, either offered simultaneously at launch or one of them would be scheduled for 2021, 2021 would need new premium DLC too.

Greetings Commanders,

Thanks

Do you still think I'm a troll? or i lied?I think the trolled and lies come from somewhere else

Yes you are a troll with terrible writing and reading comprehension.

You wrote:

So I ask, where did Zac say that 2019 priorities are Fleet Carriers and Ice Worlds then you give me Zacs August 2018 statement about the New Era and re-priorisisation of the Beyond season. There is nothing in that that claims Fleet Carriers (note they were Squadron specific Fleet Carriers in 2018) and Ice Planets are going to prioritised for 2019, re-read it:

This means that some elements of content such as Ice Planets (which many of you will have seen some fantastic progress updates from LaveCon earlier this year) and Fleet Carriers for squadrons will not be coming as part of the Beyond – Chapter Four update. The next we hear about "Squadron Fleet Carriers" is the new personal Fleet Carrier announcment in Lavecon July 2019 scheduled for a Dec 2019 release date.

Then you claim:

yes and I remember that at the end of last year they commented on the new era and such, that they would concentrate this year on fixing bugs, the introduction of a store that was not in their plans

So Aug 2018 isnt end of last year and where in that Zac statement say they will concentrate on 2019 fixing bugs? And then you say "ARX" wasnt in their plan yet it clearly was in their plan as it was revealed at Lavecon July 2019 at the same time of the Personal Fleet Carriers reveal.

And you claim other people are confused?!

I think your boredom is due to a series of FDev's mistakes. Or not... you are another some-person who don't want to end this tiny conflict, and who want to go to New Year's holiday without worry about update.

Wanna fun? use your brain.

#NOARX #UNTILFLEETCARRIER

watching you categorize complete strangers based on conspiracy theories in the game world is fun. kinda.

Yeah you have terrible reading comprehension, "reprioritised out of Beyond Season" means removed from scope. Which it was. You are making things up in your head if you think it means "to be released in 2019" or "no bugs" or "bugs only" or "New Era" or "Lies" as you have claimed over numerous posts. The fact you even link that quote to my musings on the content for New Era DLC shows you have a very poor grasp. If English is not your native language then perhaps you should stop.

To be fair here, I think part of the issue is that English may not be his native language, which would not be his fault.

Yoda flavoured troll

must. like. the troll world is so fascinating, so much variety!

as an aside, he has a point even if he might get some particulars wrong. this isn't new. we have had a several months delay which was explained by braben in person on grounds of quality, and was followed months later by the buggiest release ever. this september ofc they absolutely smashed that record if there was any doubt and here we are, looking forward to the (distant) future with hope!
