ED and the Oculus Rift DK1 Discussion Thread

I think people who've tried it are so wowed by it that the industry is leading expectation, rather than responding to it, for a change! ;)

Indeed. It's odd in a good way, especially as the support is being led by passion rather than funding. However, the last news I heard was that the OR people hope that they can release it in 2014. Which to me makes it sound like 2015 is a better bet. So will EVE: Valkyrie be a commercial product released only for people with prototype hardware? Would actually be kind of cool if so.

Segment for Lave Radio?

Hi Folks,

I have been scrim reading this thread whilst at work.

It clear that you folk have a real passion for the OR.
Just wondering if one or a few of you would be interested in
doing an interview discussion for the show. Many people only know the OR as oh yeah that VR headset thingy.. its going to be expensive isn't it..

The segment will be a chance to fill in the casual listeners as to what the Rift is what it does and why its the next big thing in gaming.

If you can inform the ED masses then maybe you can add a few more voices to the campaign to get it added to the game .

Send me a mail at info@laveradio.com if you are interested.

Cheers

I've had mine for nearly a week now and I still have a little giggle to myself every time I put it on. Sure, the resolution could be better but the experience is fantastic, playing HL2 is an absolute blast!

I really hope ED ends up supporting it as, well, it's just the right thing to do.

I'm not convinced by by the idea of VR, after trying the 90s version. So I'm sceptical of Oculus Rift.

Hopefully I'm wrong. I just need someone to tell me where I can go to try it. Seems playing a game like ED with VR would be totally awesome.

Good news, you are.

Comparing the 90's VR technology to a Rift is like comparing a Model T Ford to a modern Ferrari.

If you want to experience a Rift dev kit one of your best bets is to track down one of the Omni demonstration's.

I wasn't going to buy a Dev Kit but since the consumer version isn't going to be out til late next year (or so they say at the moment) and companies seem to be supporting the Rift already. I figured, why not? And I am very glad that I did because even though the resolution isn't fantastic at the moment the experience that the Rift gives you is utterly mind blowing.

The Dev kit may or may not be for you but I can say quite happily with my hand on my heart that it has totally blown me away and I'm very glad I shelled out for it.

Occulus Rift as a Telly?

There has been a lot of talk how this is the future of gaming, and I look forward to getting my hands on one eventually when the kinks have been steam rollered.

I wonder though, has anyone tried to use as a TV? I dont mean the 3d aspect, I imagine it would be the same or better than an Imax.

Sort of. There's an app called VR Cinema that basically puts you in a cinema with a mahoosive screen! You can choose your seat, walk around, watch 3D or 2D. It's really quite a cool demo of where this can go. I've even seen an interview with the top Oculus guys where they were talking about it as I think they see it's potential, in addition to the gaming side.

The issue, as ever, is lack of resolution on the developer kit. Future thinking though - going to be amazing!

Nobody interested in this....

Hi Guys, cool that there is an Rift thread on here after getting a Rift and developing indie games on it I just think it's the future.

After hearing about the EVR / EVE Valkyrie game I just want a game where I can jump into a cockpit and dogfight in space.

I hope Elite will have Rift as an option from the get go as the consumer rift should arrive next year with a HD screen.

However due to that fact that Elite or EVE-V have not shown up yet I set out to write a simple space shooter for the rift.

Space War is a bit rough round the edges, it's still a work in progress but you can give it a whirl for free and hopefully you will be able to get some dogfighting practice in.

Note it's Oculus Rift only.

I do hope they roll out Oculus Rift support as Elite is out next year and so is the consumer version of the Rift.

You only have to look at how show stopping the EVR demo was with it's look and lock missile system to know any Elite/Space Sim fan is going to want that full immersion experience in HD.

I added a simple look and lock feature the Space Wars and Wow, forget having to chase down and get that lock on your enemy ship just look at it and keep it in the missile lock reticle, "once it goes red he's dead!", and launch.

It looks like 2014 is going to be the a big year for PC Space Sims! ;)

No Oculus Rift on release

So I watched the new video and it seemed like there is a cockpit view in ships and you can pan your camera in different directions. FAQ mentioned Oculus Rift as a 'separate platform' and ED is not planned to be released with OR support. Will there be at least Track-IR support at release? I am backer and looking forward to play this game with a joystick, I have G940 system, will this be supported on release? In other words how much support there will be on release for peripherals other than just Keyboard and Mouse? At least controller like Xbox360 one?

TrackIR is a maybe, I think. Oculus Rift possibly won't even be released by the time the game comes out, though the devs are looking into it for later down the line, I believe. As for different control methods, I can see no reason why the joystick wouldn't be supported (though you may have to map the controls yourself). The Xbox controller is definite, seeing as that's what the devs are playing the game with at the moment.

After watching the video they need to include Oculus Rift support, maybe not for the developer edition but definitely the consumer HD edition due out next year.

As a indie developer incorporating Oculus Rift is quite simple, you are just using 2 cameras instead of one and linking the camera rigs rotation to the tracking information from the Rift. Oculus supply SDK's that simplify the integration process and provide the distortion shaders needed for the Rifts optics.

I think they could include it from the get go and it would be much more fun for the developers, also I'm sure that Oculus would be more than happy to provide them with HD prototypes.

And you wouldn't want EVE Valkyrie blowing Elite Dangerous away, would we!

the trackIR is a better option at the moment from what I have seen.

I think Oculus Rift needs to mature a bit, its still un-proven really. I expect they will look at it. Its an exciting time tech wise.

I didn't even know that trackIR existed till today, but I am sure you could accomplish the same thing with a web cam and a bit of nifty software for a much cheaper price.

I'm sure Occulus Rift is something they will be looking at eventually.

Remember the video you saw that was made specifically for the composers was all rendered with the game engine but it was not actually in "game play driven". The animation was scripted by the animators.

As per post: http://forums.frontier.co.uk/showpost.php?p=153966&postcount=74

Yea but they did mention that they are implementing cockpits right now. So if there is a cockpit I'd say it would make a lot of sense to include support for at least Track-IR as it is quite every-day gaming peripheral these days. Unless of course there is a full combat support in 3rd person view.

Still, I'd personally really enjoy using cockpit view if there was support for additional camera peripherals. Otherwise in 3rd person it would feel more like an arcade and sorta take away from immersion a lot. Space games should all be about immersion IMHO. Otherwise they just feel like little games for children.
