Establish your own Minor Faction and FAQ

This is not really something I'm interested in doing but I know others will and that's great for them.

I have but one plea for FD. Please vet any faction names, I'd not really like to be doing my own thing and suddenly head into XxherpderplolxX territory. ;)

Thank you

Agreed, and along the same lines will it be easy to tell which minor factors are player factions when traveling around, either in the system map or status panel?

Hey Zac when choosing a home-world system for our faction do we have to pick a system with the same government type as we intend to be. Ie ToC will be choosing the anarchy government type, does this mean we are restricted to choosing a system that is currently ruled by an anarchy government?

Are there any restrictions that will affect our choice of system such as population size, economy type etc taking into account that we are choosing anarchy as a government type.

I guess I'm unsure how this will show up in game. Will there be any indication in the game that the Minor Faction is associated with a particular player group? Or are groups effectively just applying for the creation of a minor faction with the same name as them that they can then support?

Additionally, what constitutes a group? Are individual CMDRs going to be applying for their own minor faction by just saying they are a group? Can I create the Church of the Final Atonement in the Hyperion system and then later convert other commanders to join my new theocracy?

Most of the groups listed have their own TS, Private Forums as well as well established lore in the Elite Universe. I don't think a solo pilot can just apply to be a minor faction without having some structure setup to back it.

Done! Answers above. :)

It didn't really answer the question, no! :p ;) All it really said was that using "Elite Dangerous" wouldn't be allowed but no other clues as to name moderation. We assume swearing/racism/all the usual stuff will rightly be disallowed but what about "silly" names, such as the examples I gave? Will there be any moderation to keep things in tone with the names already in the game?

I think I have seen some players already settling into Hyperion! And please tell me the god worshipped at this church is Spode!

My group didn't pay much attention to minor factions before this began. But when we'd heard we could somewhat officially support a minor faction, we began looking for one, as we'd rather have an existing one than have to create one of our own. So we'd searched for weeks to find one we thought would be suitable that met our criteria, and have been actively working to support it for about a week now. Is that time frame going to be enough to be able to have it registered as our own? And if so how do we go about doing that? Just send a email to the groups mailbox with our groupname/faction name?

It really depends. I would suggest emailing in with as much of the details as possible including the location and any other details and we'll look into it.

Allow me to try again. :)

The Dev team will be checking and vetting all of the names to make sure they are happy with the ones that make it into game. Mike has said that non themed names such as “Facebook group” or “Elite: Dangerous” aren’t able to make it in.

Mike B is well aware of the concerns raised on the thread about player names and will make sure those feelings are taken into account. I won’t be able to give you specifics on what names will or won’t be able to make it into game at this moment but rest safely in the knowledge that the concerns have been taken on board. :)

Does that help?

Nice job. That's some info to chew on! Thanks.

Can you clarify ' the main issue would be using CGs to directly boost a minor faction’s influence or for doing things that could otherwise be done through the background sim.'

My initial reaction to the above is it would seem that it would be just as easy to interact with the BGS at that point. Can you give an example to help understand how this would work?

The rate of injection of CG's is stated to be one/week. Assuming there were 10 groups that wanted to inject a CG...would they have to wait 10 weeks for each others CG's to be injected...or 1/week for each group...all 10 CG's would run in the same week. If the former, will this be handled by first come first serve? There was also discussion of ranks based on various criteria...will these ranks be used for guidance with placement of CG's?

Looking forward to seeing the guidelines! Thanks!

CG's are 1 per week across all groups. Not 1 per week, per group.

You should aim to have a government type that matches/compliments that of your chosen faction. :)

Hi Zac,

This is incredible good news for me and a friend who have been working for a minor faction for months! It's been a struggle and many stories that have come through, and drama, and joy! Lots of fun for sure! But didn't even dreamed about having the possibility to now "own" or be official part of it!

So, our situation is that it's been basically only the two of us doing the hardwork for our minor faction. At many crucial important points, other friends have come and helped -civil wars, increasing influence for expansion, etc - but they go back to their business once the crisis is over. We want to recruit and have more people join us, and that's in the plan. But for the time being, our minor faction is controlling one system and has expanded to two others. Our nation is growing!

In summary, we are two guys and three systems. Can we apply?

For those of you who have already adopted a minor faction we are allowing a month’s grace period from this post to register. After this we would ask that you register a new one.
Hmm, I don't think I understand this. We have already adopted a faction. We have a month to register -as a group- I guess (we are only 2 people-does that qualify?). Then after this, we have to register a new one?? a new group or a new minor faction?

If a group is already backing a minor faction, will it be possible to have that factions name changed to what the group chooses, or will every group get a fresh minor faction to build up?

If it’s already backing a minor faction then the minor faction remains as is, if they want a new name then they need a new minor faction.
If we keep the name, that's fine. If we change the name, that would be like creating a new faction? Meaning losing all controlled and expanded systems? What about just REPLACING the current minor faction name with a new one? Is that possible?

How does adopting an existing minor faction work. Will you fill out the same details but the whole minor faction will change into your groups minor faction name and details? Or will it just show as you’re supporting them?

The minor faction details would not change, it would just be recorded that they have been adopted by a player group.
After all is said and done. what changes will we see? will I have my minor faction name showing up when other players target my ship? Will we be greeted differently by stations? reduced prices in market? less security scans? or, we are still working on the perks and haven;;t figured them out yet?

Thank you so very much!! Hope you or anyone here can answer at least the first question! I really want our faction to participate!

Is there a plan to make the process as automated and "in game" as possible? Maybe including adding minor faction names in the relevant players ID etc?

As fun as this is, and we appreciate the support of the community team, it still looks a bit too ad hoc and manual and I am sure there must be many aspects of this that can be coded in game without having to send e-mails around, no? (player proposed faction names may be the exception, and still these could be submitted in game for admin approval).

I have a question for you Zak.

will players factions have artwork such as portraits and logo's, I imagine that as the group grows or becomes a power player that artwork would be required.

This. And I am concerned that it seems to have real, lasting influence on the game, you need strength in numbers. Not really in keeping with the spirit of Elite -- "Blaze your *own* trail"?

This is indeed part of that. If you do not want to team up and be recognised as a group, then you are free not too. Elite means different things to different players. This is going to revitalise the game for me.
