What kind of advantage do you have in combat with external view, i wonder? Just curious.
And why should someone be against an implementation? If you don't like it, then don't use it.

lol hit the nail on the head. For some reason, people are assuming you get an unfair advantage because you might see someone one your tail. Funny thing is...this is a space combat sim where you can be nailed from one of 1000 diff directions....not necessarily from behind. So what exact 'benefit' do you get? This is what s me sometimes...a few 'wannabe hardcore' players voice up that we shouldn't have ext views and everyone else cops it. Its funny because this is supposed to be the year 3300 and yet for some reason we've gone 'back' in time!

This is a First person game. Not a 3rd person. It simulates you looking through a pilots eyes. Which is why the rift is so suited to it.

+1 for external view (NOT in combat). We had it in Elite 2 and 3 and it didn't break the immersion at all. And it's not unrealistic to have external camera drones to survey the ship's surface when it's not maneuvering. They should be standard equipment, not a luxury module.

+1 this (but this were in plans, afterall). No need for 3rd person view in combat situation, maybe just make aiming/shooting impossible and include little maneuvering/speed (like in docking, so in theory camera drone could assist in docking from 3rd person view).

Emotions are running very high here. Please remember to count to ten and re-read what you are about to post before posting it.

I for one believe the team at ED has done an exceptional job at creating an exceptionally great game that I play when ever possible, day dream about when I can't play and have dreamed about in my sleep.

There has been plenty of talk by developers about us getting up and walking around within our ships and outside of them when docked. I for one believe that if you truly want to see your ship from outside in space, you need to suit up and perform a space walk. To me, adding the option to fly my ship from the third person view would break the game and make this just like every other flight sim game out there. Elite Dangerous is special and I for one do not want to wast the developer's time adding eye candy that has (my opinion) limited benefit.

And yes, I counted to ten, re-read my post and then posted it.

Nobody voices aganst the Oculus Rift... yet,THAT one IS an "unfair" advantage! People want to have a simple external view.

BTW, DCS Wordl, FSX, IL2 - CoD, Steel Beasts pro PE, all simulation first person "games" - ALL of them have external views! As I said multiple times: Even your average car has a rear view camera, an eagle-eye parking view, minimum a rear view mirrror... now, don't try to tell anybody driving a car IRL is something different than First Person experience... Think, before you post!

EDIT: About the "pilot eyes" - what exactly is happening with your pilot's eyes when the load out screen shows up? Mind connect interface to your neuro cortex? Ok, why can't the mind connect not work for an external camera, then?

I don't understand why people are so an al about an external view, it offers no benefit in any situation over internal views apart from being able to see the bloody skins you paid good money to see. Seeing a shiny skin in a hangar is just pointless. I don't care about lore or reality I just want to see my ship orbiting a planetary ring looking pretty. They added in the pointless remove orbital lines option which most people realised was useless as they actually serve a real purpose.

The simplest convincing reason I can think of for adding external views is:

-I will not buy another skin for any ship unless external view has been added fully in all game modes

if they don't add it, fine, I'll still play, but if they want anymore money on things like this they won't get it. and if people are still going to argue about X benefit or advantage I expect them all to ask for the removal of headlook, multi monitor and changing the FoV to ensure everyone is on a level playing field.

"Muh immershun!" again? That argument is nonsensical, as we're talking about a feature, the use of which is completely optional.
What we're talking about here would only add to the game and would subtract NOTHING. NOTHING would be ruined by this whatsoever.

Ok, so I've spent 10 min in this game, training to launch, all spent looking for an external view - I've been playing simulators for 20 years, huge on flightsim.com - look up my name- wrote a great article on immersion simming 15 years ago, I find it absolutely ridiculous that there is no external view in this game, every simulator from 1995 on has it! Battle Cruiser, FS95, 98, 2000, 2004, X and PrePar3d, Xplane, Fly, FLYII, these are all more robust simulators than this and they all had it. Crap - even Orbiter 2010 - a Freeware space simulator has it! Don't talk to me about "immersion" as that is an excuse for not having it, Its a GAME people! If anyone can choose not to use it if they don't want to! Are we communist now? lets save the people from not being immersed? Is this going to happen and WHEN? I do feel cheated on this based on the on line advertising AND the basic fact that precedence IS that simulators HAVE EXTERNAL VIEWS! Where is mine?

Totally agree with this, i was quite perplexed there was no external view in this game !

You will get an external view of your ship when we are able to get out, then you can spend all day walking around it. We don't need an external view in my opinion it would just get used to cheat in some way to see behind the ship.

What better way for immersion than to be the person in the game and not some magic mystical being able to fly around outside the ship.

Bloom.

What better than to leave the decision over the optional usage of an in-game feature to the individual player?

How are you perplexed when it's a first person game?? That's like people buying a shooter whining that there's no 3rd person view??

A space game with no 3rd person ? are you serious ??? This is not an FPS (1st person shooter) game, and even those types of games have a 3rd person view !!!

What sort of a person flying a ship doesnt want to see an outside view ?

Edit, even elite 2 had a 3rd person !! 2nd edit and planetary landings that came preboxed !

And even if I didnt have a 3rd person in this simulated space trading / combat game, surely a space ship would have different camera views around the ship to check its extremities ?

and finally even euro truck simulator has a 3rd person mode and you dont get any more of a simulation driving a lorry to calais with a trailor filled with cows !

This discussion is not new. Have a look here. Yet, there are the same old arguments, why it is "First person" (as ALL sims being first person AND feature an external view), it is "not realistic" (like we wouldn't advance the rear camera and eagle-eye surround views of todays cars in some 1300 years) and my favorite "it breaks immersion" as people are forced to use it with a gun to their head...

My best guess is, Frontier is planning on something for the "extravehicular activities add on" so they can charge extra...

Ya, lets show games from 30 years ago....... Deal with it. There is no 3rd person mode.
You know the difference between 3rd person (over the shoulder, with HUD) and External camera (Camera focused on your ship need to pan with mouse, no HUD or info)?
