I don't understand any of this "no, no, no - I'm scared of external views", this game is NOT A SIMULATOR, its no where near it and it will NEVER BE- IT IS AN ARCADE GAME - get over it - there are no orbital mechanics in it what so ever, no real energy management no real procedures or processes, no approach plates, no navigation rules, no traffic control - you "no,no,no" guys think that even in 3300 you walk into your ship grab a joystick and go? please! That's ridiculous! It's OK that ED is NOT A SIMULATOR BUT INFACT AN ARCADE GAME except when people try to believe its something its not and stifle others who really are trying to expand the GAMES capabilities and artistic value - the fact that it has not been done because a few people are SCARED of it blows my mind, we should go on believing the world is flat? or that the sun and stars revolve around the earth? These are the notions that FEAR creates, same with this stupid external view discussion.

You're confusing immersion with realism. Orbiter is very realistic, but not particularly immersive. Conversely, a game like Far Cry is very immersive, but not particularly realistic.

And one of the best ways to add immersion is to have a consistent, animated first person view that never falters. So you never feel disconnected from your pilot, ever.

You're confusing the definition of immersion as something that is absolute, and not something personal to an individual.

Consistent, animated first person view that never falters? Like when you go into the system map, or the galaxy map, or outfitting screens? Like that you mean?

I'm no moderator... and I would like to see more people voicing their oppinion about that "design decision" to cater the Frag count addicts.

I'm a pilot not a disembodied spirit. External views are for X-box ports.
NO, actually you play a pilot of a 33rd century spacecraft, with no rear camera, no landing camera... a cockpit that blocks most of your view and is so utterly inferior to any Helmet Mounted Display and/or systems like TADS/PNVS (Apache AH-64, from 1983!!!) it hurts! ...and yes, the TADS/PNVS system that blends the IR/LLTV cameras view into the pilots vision is actually older than the original ELITE. Mankind must be really degenerating in the next 1000 plus years.

For REALISTIC SIMULATIONS like DCS World, FSX, X-plane etc. external views are standard.

"No" applies to kids Egoshooter games, where Frag addicts live in fear of the next big cheater who might fry their butt?

If you had ever flown a real flight simulation you would know, there is neither a need to block, nor an advantage to an external view (mind NO 3rd Person over the shoulder!) it simply ruins your Situational Awareness and gets you killed if you use it in combat. But if you only played Battlefield or CoD all your live, you can't know of course...

P.S. What is that X-Box you are talking about???

I am happy with the idea of camera drones. Especially if they have some related mission use.

At some point we'll be able to get out of our ships anyway so this issue will go away.

Love it, want it, need it. Just find a way so it cant be used with hardpoint deployed (ie no combat).
Or limit it to solo mode! "No NPC character was cheated as the computer already knows everything" *bumps forehead against something solid*

How can you say what is or isn't realistic within ED? The developers designed the game, the setting, and the technologies; they determined what is "realistic". As for the Real World, how can any of us know what technology will exit in 3300AD?

My point that using an external view to play a DCS simulator game lowers it to that of an arcade game is 100% valid.

Playing a game like ED, or Star Citizen with an external view is pretty much like playing Galaga.

Sandro has already gone on record saying that the developers are looking in to a limited external view. I am sure that they will get it right.

"Reality" in quotes, is not reality.

That's the point, you bring these games to the point of arcades for using the external view, is not really the problem.

What matters is that each game as "IL2" or "DCS" are actually based on the existing reality, not in "Reality" and so can and are the most realistic gaming simulators and richer in detail (than ED) to be used here as an example. And they all have the external view, it does not make them less realistic as fulfill their role of being just a game, based on reality.

As I already said, not ED has nothing of reality (except maybe milk way 1: 1) and makes you pilote a spaceship like you're piloting a jet fighter, which has no basis in any of our reality.

What about "The developers designed the game," the FD is so faithful to what they proposed (only cockpit view), that all the time they want to promote the game, either through videos or images, they always use the external view(in most cases), which they insist on deprive us.

You're confusing the definition of immersion as something that is absolute, and not something personal to an individual.

Consistent, animated first person view that never falters? Like when you go into the system map, or the galaxy map, or outfitting screens? Like that you mean?

I suggest that Elite Frontier is split into two games.
One is for the people who want to be the ship (only cockpit view, no trade, if you do not fight for more than 24 hours your ship self destructs)
One is for the "casual pansy players" and has external view, chasing cam and pan cam

It is not hard to implement (just make the server two shards)

(I am an casual pansy player before the yelling starts here)

How convenient it is to disembody your spirit when outfitting your ship, mmh?

And that kind of game had external view options by the dozens way before the word "console" began its career.

Since I am getting negative rep for my opinion on this subject, what are you, special? You are outside of your ship being you are in a station. Use your head mate.

The fact that people are so upset with this and willing to give negative rep for my take on it, makes me think it wasn't long ago they were bothering adults on xbox live about their opponents mothers sex lives ;)
