External View [A definitive discussion]

Sure I can. All those screenshots of external views of ships are from the internal view of another commander looking externally upon someone else's ship XD

It wont happen and as far as I noticed in this forum we that wants the additional immersion aka external view are the so called "console" unwanted crowd.
I would go play my "console" you naysayers - problem is I dont own one and never will - I`m a simmer and PC elitist and I want a external view in Elite. Problem?

I cant believe that tread above about the legitimacy of external views not being in the game was closed. Its a valid point to be made - are Frontier misrepresenting the game by not including external views on release, considering external views of ships etc in action feature so strongly in official promotional material?
At the very least its certainly kicking yourself in the teeth from the publicity point of view - those sorts of unofficial screenshots by players would help enormously with promotion of the game on social sites. People are interested in seeing that stuff - ships up close, videos of them landing, fancy skins, hectic battles, flybys etc. Its a very important feature to be left out of a release sim IMO and screenshots purely from cockpit view are not that exciting if that is all you see - its not going to capture the imagination of the FPS generation that's for sure.
When I think back to Frontier what was it that sold me on the game? - its was surely the views of the ships in reviews and on the box, not the view of Saturn. Its a whole aspect of the game we are not seeing and that is not being seen by potential buyers on social sites. Thats got to be terribly bad for publicity.

So...... Is this going to happen or not? If so when? If not I want a credit for a product not deliverd as advertised. Also the developers need to remove the external advertising from the Internet as obvuously the product is not capable of that. If the shots are from someone else's ship they need to be labeled as such so that no one gets the impression it can be done from a single product alone. I'm a step away from going to the authorities over false advertising.A response and if so a a delivery date is required.
I hate seeing this thread just because it reminds me how much I enjoy thrid person....
I would LOVE to be able to dogfight in this game with a third person view... Freelancer, SWG, etc style. That being said, I'm not under any impression that it will ever be available.
At least I can bring myself to tolerate this form of first person because I'm in a cockpit. First person shooters on the other hand, I find ridiculous. Nothing immersive about feeling like you have blinders on and no peripheral awareness like you would in real life.
But I digress. I dream of third person. Freelancer, and SWG forever!

This is a stupid discussion. Seriously, the world will not end if we're allowed to take external screenshots of our ships. As for combat advantage. Simple solution.
You cannot use the external view when weapons are deployed. But I really don't see this as an issue since the radar tells you where an enemy is and his orientation at all times. I mean, don't any of you use your radar while in combat? It's like an auto-cheat.
As for loss of immersion. Why can't we have drones that detach or launch and be used to view our ship externally? How is that a loss of immersion?

I dont like games like that and I didnt like Freelancer as well, I dont like the idea at all of fighting in third person it just seems so arcadelike and complete unrealistic in the extreme. I would love to be able toa dmire my ships from the outside and take some fancy shots of them in all their glory but I dont want to ever be playing the game in 3rd person mode. That is about as far away from my gameplaying preferences as you can get, sorry.
Well camera drones will be in the game in the future according to the FD team. I really hope that.
You can buy ship decals from the store, what's the point if you can't see it?
It's not like many other players will look at your paint job and say it looks good....
Without the ability to look at the outside of the ship this is just vapourware.
Perhaps an in station only option to see your whole ship from outside rather than just a tiny bit of it in the outfitters?

How can you fly drones, and at the same time the ship in order to get exciting action shots? I only have 2 arms. Can't fathom how this gonna work. Why would we just wanna take pics of the ship not moving or firing weapons? How boring. Just give us a view in the hangar if that's the case... :S

I am pretty sure the name 'drones' is just something they have come up with to placate the hardcore crowd. I would guess in every way they will just be external views that we know from other sims. Just in this game they have to be called 'drones' or some few loud people will complain. I just wish they would stop bandying about the bush and just enable them in the flaming game then we can start seeing some real screenshots.
If they enabled user skins and decals as well the game would really come alive and it might really start to entice people when they see some awesomeness. I have to admit though at the moment this game must look a bit dull to other gamers who dont know about the Elite games. I wonder how well its doing in sales, I bet its not doing very well - no user skins, no true multiplayer, no external views and no Steam, basic gameplay presently - cant see all that being very good for sales at all!

Yea you're probably right, some of the suggestions I've seen have been just completely stupid and idiotic. There's a reason why certain things work in gaming over the last 30 years. Im fine if they make it a solo only option but even ED uses 3p views to sell trailers sometimes. Imagine all the machinima guys waiting to do awesome story videos?! Free advertising for them!
