The breaks immersion defense for not having external view is just silly.

There would be a key to turn on external view and if you don't like it you wouldn't have to use it.

Having options doesn't break immersion if you don't use them.

Yeah maybe, but its also unlawful at least here in North America, to your point, It really is awful that we need laws to keep people honest about selling their own products.
Here's the thing: None of those trailers ever said "hey pal we have external views!" that was an assumption that you made.

Exactly, it's something you have complete control over. On the other hand I wonder how immersed those people feel while getting disconnected messages...

Why I think third person view would be a good idea.

While most of us would want to play Elite from first person, immersion and all that, there's a possibly very large demographic of people who would like to be able to view things in third person; and it could be an issue of accessibility to a degree, at least having the option would be nice.

Since, evidently the poll to this very topic is broken, it would be very interesting to see who is all for an external view be it in a no fire zone, or only in solo play or whatever. It appears that those that want "total immersion" are severely outnumbered by those that could care less and would like the external view capability.

Which is of no consequence to that regulations, as 'advertising' explicitely includes visiual representation of the product, videos etc. UNLESS having a clear indication that it is not part of the product... only the release trailer has a hint on that.
The deliberate aspect may be debatable, but I said it before, they are a professional company, not some buddies from around the block making a mod or something.

Wishful thinking doesn't help with the lawyers... they find something, they use it against you.

Edit - or to make it more plausible. If you bought a cooking knife from a webshop that showed a video of someone cutting meat with it, wouldn't you be surprised it has no sharp edge that actually cuts? At least it was also just an 'assumption' on your side the knife would be sharp! Guess, you would give it back or a at least want them to fix it/sharpen it?

Every attempt at a new poll was 'merged' here and the poll locked... it seems.

If they are going to sell paint jobs. And they do. And I've bought them. I want to see my ship in 3rd person view. Period. No ifs, no ands no buts. Period. BUT no 3rd person in combat. Period. I agree the main idea is a FPS view in the cockpit. I get it. I also get if you want more money from me on paint jobs, let me see my ship. And NOT just that silly view in the equipment hangar. Thats my opinion. You are welcome to yours and I'm welcome to mine. :D

All,

I have been in touch with Michael about this and without going to far in depth on a private converstaion it currently is being discussed but no resolution has been made yet to go with an external view in the near future. That being said I am continunig to discuss this with him, however, different time zones are causing a lag in communications. If the result turns out to be negative going forward I assure you there are still a few avenues (Some more serious than others) that we can take to persuade Frontier to move in this direction. It all comes down to how strongly we feel about getting this accomplished. I will have more infoirmation on this by Monday.

Not if it said "actual knife has no cutting edge" on the video. That is, unless I was being deliberately thick to try and get my way...

Edit:

Oh well, not much point continuing this then. Unless people are seriously going to threaten legal action or take part in some kind of poison pen campaign to get an external view, of course. That worked so well for getting offline mode okayed, after all...

We absolutely need a 3rd person zoomable view in Supercruise, at least. You can't fight in SC anyway, so no problem with it being used for tactical advantage or anything. You could even take out the HUD when using 3rd person view to make it something you'd really only use to appreciate a particularly cool fly-by or take a particularly nice screenshot. Why not?

Just to understand...

I want to buy this game but I personally don't get 1st person. I get its immersive, but it seems like it should be reversed, no combat in cockpit mode because its the fancy immersive thing but omg why have paint jobs if you never see your ship? If you are never free to just look around at the beautiful scenery. It seems soooo restrictive to play hours of an mmo stuck in the same cockpit and experience a flush living universe through that lense. I really want to but it, and would if there was any mention that they will put in 3rd person (even without combat, or only when people are not near me, or whatever) but theres no way I am going to truly enjoy a space battle game if I cant see my ship rolling, dodging, thrusting, looking cool. To me 50% of the game is the coolness and visuals of dogfights, races to safety etc. I just want to see my ship. Went into a store to get a box version today and justcouldn't do it.

tl;dr Dont need ambiguation, but i'm missing all the cool ship visuals in 1st person. I know pvp, explore etc but really whats the point if i cant see my ship doing stuff?

.
Correct! You realise the CGI video trailer for launch was the first and only video/screenshot advert that had this information? ALL prior videos and newsletter content including the launch events teaser videos said not a single word about an external view, flybys are not in the game. So it did say nothing about it unless the first people brought it up here... just have a look at the newsletters and the media content on the website to see for yourself, possibly before trying to silence people here with false assumptions on your side?

Here's the thing: None of those trailers ever said "hey pal we have external views!" that was an assumption that you made.

Dude the advertising laws state that you have to faithfully represent your product, your completely wrong. It's sad that people think you can your product and get away with it. There were no disclaimers on the advertising and there still isn't on the ED media page 27 of the 32 screenshots are external are so is the video- there are NO disclaimers. That's not legal in any country with advertising laws. Except the one Geers lives in.

What?!

.....but I was fooled by all the advertising on the web site and you tube showing awesome external views and fly bys, the first thing I did in the game was to find the external view key - what a surprise there is none! Like I want to fly around in a standard "cockpit" for the next 5 years of this game play. Ti be honest I've never been so disappointed in a game esp because it appears I was deceived by the advertising.

I really did the same thing and i´m completely disappointed.

Save it for the Xbox one version of elite

Wow, such a contentious subject! I just have to weigh in and say that I hate the idea of an external view... anything other than complete first person immersion would spoil the game for me, especially if combat was easier in third person.

I'd venture that they'd sell a lot more of those fancy paint jobs if they'd allow a rotatable and zoomable 3rd person view. OBVIOUSLY not in combat. But for beauty shots and gorgeous screenies In SC? Absolutely.
