They might extend the hangar view to be more controllable I suppose.

Or they could surprise us with a single player only external view.

Outside chance: Full external view anywhere to assess how much of an impact it makes on game / sh*tstorm it causes in forum ;-)

It would make sense to add it in sooner rather than later to assess/find any game play issues.

TheNameIsJambo has an excellent suggestion over here

Hey,

From what I've noticed, the 'External View' perspective is a very hot topic around here. Some people want to see their ship from the outside - Which is understandable, since most flight and racing type games normally offer a 3rd person camera....

As far as I understand it, it is to have a continuously recording buffer (say 12h) recording the game state, i.e. the positions of ships, firing etc. Very much like a recording of the multiplayer data that is streamed, but including the player as well.

With this data the player could then 'rewind' and play a sequence of events, which would be re-rendered by the game engine. This would allow several things.

  • Complete freedom of camera movement, including ship tracking
  • The ability to capture the 'did you see that!' moments that happen accidentally
  • The ability to 'document' epic space battles
  • HUD free recording
  • Easier editing
  • No gameplay advantage (as would only be available offline after the fact)
  • No immersion breaking
  • Available to all
  • Ignorable to all
  • Data file would be useful for reporting hackers, exploiters etc.

All in all it would appear to have the potential to be all things to all players, allowing the neon ravens to make their spectacular videos without breaking immersion or providing a combat advantage for anyone.

^^ It's a somewhat different solution.

Of course it would please some folks, but I suspect many people after an external view want to view what's happening "now"... not revisit stuff later :)

eg: I'm coming out of a station and see a couple of odd ships passing by. I'd love to flick to external view and see them better, from a more atmospheric view point. I doubt 2hrs later, I'd want to flick through my recorded footage to do this. Although that feature would have its own merits of course.

ps: FD have repeatedly mentioned such a view being available via a drone. So if it is offered it's likely to come in this guise.

The sooner the better IMHO. I want to know how I look to other players and how I scale next to space stations and other ships.

All a bit narcissistic isn't it?

I'm more curious what the insides of other players spaceships look like as they explosively fragment :D

All a bit narcissistic isn't it?

Of course it's narcissistic! Don't you know the feeling of smug satisfaction when you (or your wife) finishes cleaning the car on a Sunday morning? You stand back and look proudly at your gleaming (or rusty) vehicle.

The ability to be able to see your gleaming (or battle scarred) Cobra III from an external view is exactly the same, is part of being the human animals we are, and is perfectly permissible.

Do you lose immersion in your life when you survey your car from the outside? Well then...

Edit: The "you" in this post doesn't refer to you personally, Frobitz. It refers to the general 'you', particularly those who insist that having the external view would spoil it for them...

As so often stated in this thread "If you don't like it, don't use it". Simple.

PPS. "I'm more curious what the insides of other players spaceships look like as they explosively fragment"
Now THAT's downright nasty :D:D:D

My point was many sims have external views in single player but on the serious online servers where a lot of their community play things like external views, HUD assists and padlock views are often disabled to add realism.

FD could do something similar - in SP mode (offline or online), allow external views. If people choose group play (even private groups), this gets disallowed.

That would mean the client should already have the functions of external views... it would be the server that decides if this should be on or off.

Or, if it is not feasible, how about letting us have external views in SP offline mode? Once you go online, all external views get disabled.

Could work, couldn't it?

External camera without breaking immersion?

Might be a neat idea.

I personally couldn't care for it, I prefer the immersion and am happy to see my ships externals when docked.

I guess the appeal of an external camera system would be to capture nice screenshots and to check out/admire any awesome paint jobs you've picked up.

I figure there are ways you could add this for those that want it without breaking immersion, and without offering an advantage.

Idea1:
Only available during supercruise mode, so no combat advantage and only available via fixed point on the ship model.

Idea2:
A flight recorder/replay module, allowing you to watch things back - but only when docked. Again no combat advantage, and you could offer this as a service that costs in game credits.

Idea3:
Some sort of automated drone/nano-cam that you can deply & operate but then you lose flight control 100%, and must return to cockpit control in order to pilot your ship. (my personal favorite , as calling it a nano-drone - means no modelling required for the camera/drone - because it's teeeeny-tiny :D)

Dont need this, but putting it out there as I've been hopping around the forums and I've seen this come up quite a bit.

And the requests are being put down perhaps too harshly.
I get the immersion can be ruined but if done correctly - it could lead to even better in-game immersion.

tx all

Vanity view, external rotating camera?

Dear Devs

I would like a vanity view please, an external rotating camera would be just lovely. Are there any plans for any external view of our ships?

Could the external view be akin to the full screen Galaxy View?

The ships computer would know what the hull looks like, it should be able to pull schematics of any attached hardware and paint jobs, then project a full 3D model using the on-board holographic systems. You could then pan around it to your hearts content.

The computer could even simulate any hull damage that it has detected. The background of the image could be the local Stella layout (with no other ships in view) or just black. With the former you would also be able to get some great screen shots as well ;) Like with the Galaxy View, when you pull it up the ship comes to a stop - prevents combat while it is open and makes you vulnerable while you play around.

Reactions: Tek
i dont get it why people think external view shreds immersion. think of it as drone, computer simulation etc.
in the year 2014 we already have such technologies (and they are actually used, mind you), so why on earth shouldnt there be similar (and even more advanced) techs in the year 3300(!)?

regarding pvp: well, i could not care less. so, again: if there is no external view due to pvp, make it a solo play feature only. i will happily play solo then. everybody is happy. (well, technically there are those who want external view for pvp, but that seems not to be possible at all. so, bad luck for you guys.)

External Camera View (drone)

Love the BETA so far, it looks stunning and now we have ability to take 4k screen shots and customise our paint schemes. We should be able to view our ships from the outside. Some will argue about realism, the external views could be from camera drones.

The camera drone should be unavailable during combat as to not give an unfair advantage.

Ideally I would love to see a full 'photography mode' similar to games like Gran Turismo and Forza - but I would be happy with a 3rd person external view for now :)
