Like the sound of this implementation a lot. I'm not in favour of third person view generally unless it's done right/makes realistic sense and a drone cam is good with me. The recent quote from Mike Evans is just what I wanted to hear.

Aside from this drone cam, keep the game 100% first person please :).

(don't forget that in future we'll be able to walk around our ships, both inside and out, so we will get to see them from the outside, but depicted in a realistic manner ;))

Still looking for a function to record flight and playback offline with "director" controlling camera position, pan, etc. for movie-making.

Seen it in other games. Totally avoids any claim of in-game abuse or advantage, allows beauty shots, etc. Seems to fill all the reqs.

External camera using Utility Mount or Support Tech Mounting

I would really like to have a module that allows me to take external pictures.

I intend to go exploring in this ED Galaxy and to take a lot of photographs and video. I would like a module that allows me to do this without having my HUD and/or the window frame of my Cobra in the shot.

I'll pay good, hard, in-game credits for this.

Many posts on this you should use search. Confirmed by the developers there will be external views of some type using drones or a hardpoint but it will be nerfed so it is unusable in combat or for advantage in a fight.

Thanks Commander. Yep, I should have looked/searched, sorry.

That aside, I really want this camera module to be of a "professional quality" so a dedicated image-capture module, and not just a Kodak Instant sellotaped to the top of my ship. I certainly don't want it to be in any way combat-related. This should be a serious camera unit for those Commanders who want to explore the Galaxy. Going back to my whisky, now.

Well, to be fair the search function isn't the best. Check out the links in my signature for all the answers to what is already planned for the game. It is a lot.

I found the developer post:

We are looking at external camera views, with the following caveats:

* They are contextualised as camera/drone systems
* They are not designed to be used as alternate flight views
* Their primary function is to allow "beauty shots"
* They may have occasional tertiary game play functions (such as seeing how close you are to something)

No ETA at the moment though.

Hope this helps.

Just want to see my ship sometimes...

Hello,

is it possible at the moment to get a look of the ship from outside?

My intention is a camera view from the outside of the ship or a free view cam just as in ELITE 2: Frontier.

It is just nice to see sometimes the own ship - especially if you have bought your own ship colours (which I have not done), but what should I have from these special paintings if I never get a look at it?

Did I miss something?

PS: I would prefer a preview of the ship I want to buy (in the shipyard)! In Elite 2 you have had a preview too. Maybe you can choose later on between different paintings too.

ED absolutely needs external cameras, so we can take in the incredible vistas in the same way as we get teased with in the dev videos. It would be a crime not to include any.

Ideally would be a freefloating camera that you could fly all around the ship to look at it from different angles and different zoom levels. It could be controlled in the same way as the ship itself. it should be able to use all tricks of image composition, so it shouldn't be locked on the ship.

I don't need nor do I want a third person camera that can be used to fly the ship or to engage in combat. The camera should be purely to enjoy the aesthetics of the game, without a HUD or other obstructions. Ship controls should be disabled while using the camera.

To give the camera drones a bit of in-game functionality, how about tying them to hull repairs? They could be purposed as external hull repair drones - which of course could be used even when the hull is perfectly fine. :D

Perhaps they could even be used to carry out repairs on other ships. This could give the game a bit of a "healer" mechanic.

External cam views (Solo Only)

Pretty much as the title says.

I'd like to be able to make machinima movies with ED. I understand people's concerns re tactical advantage of being able to see outside and around your ship, so....

Could you guys at FD allow the debug cam (or whatever it is you use to make your trailers) to be usable in Solo Play, but deactivated in the code for when someone is in Online Play mode.

Cheers, SK.

Im afraid they are already working on something similar, maybe camera drones, or exterior hull cameras, but not a 3rd person controlled ship will be available, so maybe it will be difficult to make amazing movies like the trailers, just a few nice static pics.

Better that than everyone flying in 3rd person like in an arcade mode :)

Some sort of external third person view would definitely be helpful.

When I first bought the Anaconda I was nearly shot by the station because I just could not exit through the station letter box for what I thought at the time was an unknown reason or bug (I quickly logged out just before the guns were turned on my for loitering). It was only after I watched a youtube video of someone docking the it that I realised that the POV from inside the Anaconda is actually really high and I had been ramming my nose into the station way below the opening.

the problem with leaving the debug camera code in for solo play is that someone WILL hack it and make it available in the online game, i would suggest waiting to see what FD come up with with regards to this.

Yeah you have a point there I suppose. Maybe if HUD is removal for the Drones I hear of, that will be a good sort of compromise.

regarding external cameras, 80% of the backers want it with the other 20% shouting immersion breaking. but Mr Braben is sticking to his guns and not including it, though we will see external camera views with drones, I doubt it will be a playable view.
