Glorious HIPs - 3306

Oh what to do, now I am stuck, I just reached system HD 221180, one of my target systems, there are 4...yes 4 planets with 9 bio each, I've calculated it out and with first discovery bonus I am looking at a massive 1,573,019,200 cr, it will slow me down a bit though....oh what to do!
Go for it ...

We know that EDSM doesn't distinguish system names by case , and this leads to the duplicated names issue in EDSM.

This means that the commander query I use to find the first discoverer, and traffic, of a system returns unreliable data for systems with case dependent names.
for example the query "?systemName=c+Puppis" returns "C Puppis,goemon,2017-03-03 10:04:55,11"
Even though both c Puppis and C Puppis are in the game, and the Spansh data dump.

Consequently, the only way to check the first discoverer will be to look them up in the galmap, which is a pain. Also, if there is no traffic there - they will have to be visited.
But first, I have to find the duplicated names, which is a pain. Hopefully there won't be too many.

So for the time being I am going back to finish sectors 2 and 3.

I have finally worked out how the EDSM API deals with "duplicate" systems. ie those where the letter case matters, like c Puppis and C Puppis.

Consequently I now have a script which can test if a system has a duplicate entry and will print the traffic out for both entries. It's not elegant but it works.

The only problem is finding candidates for the test in the first place. I have manually tested about 20 systems so far and a significant number of them showed that previous traffic queries got the wrong duplicate or failed completely. The following systems have now been corrected.

These were fairly obvious candidates, but there may be more of them.

It's taken 3 days of effort to get this far, so now I really am going back to sector 2 and 3.

Job done, 1 day, 1 system, 4 small moons, 36 bio's, 144 separate samples, base value;

BP6cg1Q.jpg

With first discovery value added on!

kXnxV3D.jpg

Back to my primary task now and just a little bit richer!

I didn't math that right, 3 x 36 = 108 samples, not 144, although I did ping them all with the scanner so I guess that counts as well!

Ok did a big push no this one to get them finished before Christmas day, sectors 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 and 1 all finished;

Fueled up and ready to head out on my next adventure, stopped at station 4 on the Colonia Bridge where they conveniently had 115k tons of Tritium at 49k per ton, nice, and I have a set of stars to check out to the west of the galactic core as well as a few others scattered around. Will be nice to see the final data from the HIP project when you finish the final set, it's been a long one that's for sure!

I'm currently away from my pc for a few days, so won't be able to update the data until the new year.
Hoping to finish everything by the end of January.

Just happened to jump into the HD 96507 system ( HIP 54293) on the way to my next target.
The system looked very interesting so I thought I would find out what info EDSM had about it.
Not much, just 4 stars, one big B class, a Y dwarf and 2 neutrons .....

Screenshot_0069.jpg

So EDSM only held "honk" details about this system, even the EDSM first Cmdr name is not recorded on any of the stars.
Which means that the system was fully discovered before anyone using EDSM came along, and then it was only honked.

This is a bit disapponting, that there are incomplete data on HIP stars in EDSM.
Unfortunately, I can't think of any way to check the HIP stars for the accuracy of number of bodies in EDSM (or Spansh which is the same).
That is without visiting them all over again. Which is not going to happen, by me anyway.

Only 18 HIP stars left on my list, BTW.

Checking on the latest "systems-without-main-stars" published on edastro there are 5912 HIP systems listed. Ok its not all but it is a starting point.

I was working on reducing or visiting systems on this list, (nipped back to the bubble for suit etc and got caught up in CG's), the problem I would have with trying to tackle this list is that I have no way of sorting them easily by area's, but I am willing to help reduce this list.

Credits, Carrier no problem, Tritium I mine as I go, but am not the fastest around:)

A quick and dirty way is quite easy.
Download https://spansh.co.uk/api/dump/ID64 and see if there's a bodyCount field. If there's one compare it against the number of bodies in the bodies array, if there's none it's pre-FSS and can safely be assumed incomplete.

One with bodyCount: https://spansh.co.uk/api/dump/143526450181
One with bodies but without bodycount: https://spansh.co.uk/api/dump/218094949411

Can you please give me a hint as to where to find the latest "systems-without-main-stars" ?
I looked on edastro site, including the api, but couldn't see anything like it.
I can sort any list of stars with coordinates into regions or sectors.

I have now finished visiting systems on my list of HIP systems with zero visits, so at least we now know who first visited every HIP star on EDSM. unless some have been missed - but there won't be many

I will start finalising the Glorious HIP project data over the weekend.

Yeah as Eahlstan linked, it's only 18m lines long....lol, a lot of exploring happened before the FSS when people didn't point at the main star to get tags, I may have done a few myself. I have gone through that list and done a few of the smaller catalogue sets to clear them up, but 18m, that's a lot of systems without main stars.

That's the one, It may be long but it is reducing by a fair amount, in the last 6 months it has dropped by about 400,000 systems, I have only done a few of them:)

It is located on edastro - Maps, charts, and graphs - Files and Spreadsheets in the systems section and is updated on a weekly basis.

I was mainly working in the Outordy sector, copied out of the list all of those - started at the top of the list, set route to next system and checked and visited all listed systems that I found en route until I got there - then on to the next one on the top of the list. A sort of random bodged zig zag back and forth route within the sector. It worked after a fashion but these HIP's are spread out over a lot larger area.

After I downloaded the zero bodies list, I discovered I had already downloaded it last September. I must be getting old, or rather, I am already old.
Anyway, searching for HIP stars in there is more than just looking for "HIP nnnnn" because many HIPs have other kinds of names, especially "HD nnnnnn" etc.

I will create a list of them by sector when I have finished examining the 62 stars that are still missing traffic data for some reason.
Most seem to be very close to the bubble so shouldn't take too long.

Of course a list of systems with no bodies doesn't help with cases like the one above, where the system had been honked and 4 stars found, then missed 13 planets.

Out of curiosity how many HIP stars are there?
There are 117,953 in the original catalogue, but 4,357 of them are not in ED at all (*)

So there are 113,596 HIP stars in ED.
Of these, there are 46,047 HIP stars in ED that do not have an HIP nnnnnn style name.

(*) Mostly because their coordinates lay well outside the outer limits of the ED galaxy. But that's another story.

OK, I think we have finished with this HIP project (for now) !!

The final spreadsheet is here ... Finalised HIP project spreadsheet

The last HIP to have traffic verified in EDSM was HIP 10701 this pm.

There are many HIP stars with "EDSM zero bodies" in the spreadsheet. I will try and compile a list of them over the next few days and add a marker to the spreadsheet.

The final list of commanders who have visited more than 100 HIP catalogue stars (many have non HIP names btw).
is as follows. The attached spreadsheet has a fully complete list of commanders. Apologies to those commanders whose names have been mangled.
