Help me understand why I had to die

Not only is this fundamentally untrue, but it's also entirely useless to the op in terms of what to do in the future.

The so-called "boring person" here has already contributed to the thread with far more valuable info.

What's more, the concept that what you consider to be a baseless gank would somehow be magically made better by a line of roleplay is cognitive dissonance at its finest.

The sooner people realise that and accept that everyone has equally valid play styles, the sooner we'd have a less toxic player community as a whole for elite.

Valid, but boring.

A single line wouldn't help, you're right there.

Indeed, a very accurate statement...

Which should be reinforced with a reminder for people to select a mode that compliments the way they play. So many of the sour "I got blown up" posts could be removed if the player considered if playing in open actually provided the play style they wish to experience.

Hunting miners deep inside rings is great fun in open play but only if in an anarchy systems (I don't need my stellar record sculled) I love the heart pounding shock I know is happening on the other end as they did not expect to see me out there in the middle of nowhere just happily mining away, whether they escape depends on them really, generosity goes a very long ways but running, not so much, although I always let them escape maybe with 2% hull or something because of my humanity (OK maybe not always). Hey, if someone is mining in an anarchy system in open play as a new player they especially need this type of 'education' its actually very exciting for them (at least that's what I tell myself that is) ;-).

Kind of a disturbing thought, but a valid one.

The general concensus seems to be "How come somebody find me when I'd been there for hours so there was no low-wake to follow?" but it's entirely possible somebody with LR sensors DID follow the OP's low-wake and then just waited a while before attacking.
Sure, you'd think gankers would have better things to do but, when you see them doing something and then go back 6 hours later and find they're still doing the same thing, in the same place, you start to realise what you're up against.

Back when collecting junk from the crashed 'goid scout was a big earner, for example, I used to get my jollies by running the missions in a 900m/s Viper 3 (which allowed me to collect the stuff without landing, due to it's shape) and it never ceased to amaze me how often there'd be gankers who were quite happy to spend all day parked on the surface, waiting for people to show up.

That last bit sums it up for me..."and it never ceased to amaze me how often there'd be gankers who were quite happy to spend all day parked on the surface, waiting for people to show up."

Same with Dav's Hope, there is a ganker crew stationed there all the time!? Like what? They literally spend their entire game time just hanging around to gank any unsuspecting players. I was relogging there and went into Open by mistake. Before I could sneeze I had my grounded ship attacked. what? I went back a couple of days later same guys doing the same MO (now on my idiot list).

I think a lot of the pristine rings are in anarchy systems as there are no stations there to spoil the reserve rating. Just another reason why I mine in solo when in the bubble.

Said it before but I recall seeing a well-known ganker/griefer doing his thing at Obsidian Orbital - operating with somebody else, shooting at player's ships as they dock and then colliding with the ship as it ran for the mailslot, thus causing the player's ship to be destroyed.
Over a period of a couple of weeks, while OO was busy at the time, he was there constantly, in Open, doing the same thing day after day. Week after week.

I know this forum doesn't like to name names so I did a google search to see if any other parts of the ED community were talking about it, and there were.
Repeatedly.
Almost continuously since 2015.

At the same time, a "Why do people gank?" thread got posted here and this guy showed up and explained that "people gank cos there's nothing else to do".

🤷‍♂️

It's not surprising you're bored when you spend your time doing the same bloody thing, over and over. Week after week, year after year.

Agreed,

Elite is just so different from other games that support pvp.

If another CMDR blows you up it’s not just about the credit loss or hurt feelings/pride, in many cases they’re erasing time.

Mine in an asteroid field for 3 hours and get blown up? Three hours down the toilet...

Go exploring for a week and get blown up with data on your ship? Week didn’t exist...

Fly to Farseer with meta alloys and get blown up? Back to Maia for you...

Time is a real commodity in this game and if you value your gaming time you need to use the modes wisely.

But they’re having so much fun because of that extra risk... right?

That’s why I think that if you die with notoriety insurance should void your policy. It would be more fun because of the added risk.

if you mine in a lawless/anarchy/uninhabited system why would there be any police?
If he’s in anarchy, then there would be no police, and I am actually fine with that. It’s a risk you take to be in that space.

My other points still stand though- how do we find his killer? Where is the system for bounty hunting, etc?

Very well said!!!

However, if they are so bored with nothing to do, why don't they just go play a different game, there are a lot to chose from! Like EVE or whatever? I would suggest it's not entirely because they are bored. There is an element in these people's personality that gets off on this... And FDev's policy is to let them get away with it.

I don't have a down vote option on the forum so... 👎

When being as lame as this, you might as well menulog
I agree in principle however unfortunately all the advantage is on the agressor in ED. Pirates , traders, miners, bounty hunters all have to make some compromises in their builds to do what they do, player killers however have no such issue, they have all the cards and now with fleet carriers even range is no issue.
Add into that the most "famous" of the player killers tend to cheat using bandwidth monitors so to not use one is putting the defensive player at an even bigger disadvantage. (And that is not even going down the road that some of these players were out and out red handed caught cheating but FD chose not to account ban or wipe the offending players)
Add into all of that that FD chose not to add any real lasting or plausible consequences to that kind of play style then I would suggest if in open anything goes that the game mechanically allows to avoid player killers if you want to.

It depends how much you value your time and each individuals perception of what is a reasonable risk...

I’ll give you an example.

I play ‘dead is dead’ 💀 because the insurance system has never made any sense to me. If a ganker catches me out it’s back to the Sidewinder for me because I happen to be very unreasonable and can’t bare seeing an insurance claim on my toon.

That’s all my ships/engineers/guardian unlocks/ranks....weeks of work, gone.

Therefore playing in open would usually be a totally unacceptable risk to me unless I’ve specifically planned to make a throwaway/daredevil CMDR on a recent restart.

Is it reasonable to restrict myself to the solo prison due to my questionable play style? I don’t know...

But given that the best interaction I can usually hope for in open is either “07” or death I just don’t feel I’m actually missing anything.

I mean let’s be honest, it’s not like people are posting none stop funny co-op stories around here...

So, when there's no BGS motivation, no roleplay, no PP reasons, you're not pirating me (all valid PvP reasons), and you're just trying to gank my specialised AX support ship because you happened to be lurking at the site of a Thargoid incursion hoping to see another player to send to a rebuy screen from your PvP murderboat (also a valid reason, it's a game about blowing up spaceships after all...) the aim is... to teach me a lesson?

And the lesson is... go into Solo? That's the organic PvP sorted, so much for my dreams of organic co-op!
