HTC Vive resolution and  focus

Oh I'm not disputing that it will run at 90fps. It will, but it will also look butt ugly and aged like a game from 90s. I've just tried it to see if I'm simply not being a snobbish ****, but nope it is still butt ugly. The game has 0 immersion for me when everything looks like it has a god beam shinning on it with no shadows and it looks like a sparkle fest with no AA... I mean the AA doesn't do much, but at least it helps ....

.

Well, I'm agree that game on my settings looks a bit worse but not ugly :) Still using high textures and high terrain setting. At menu, inside the hangar I don't see too munch differences when ambient and shadow are off and still those settings are for 980ti users , personally on my rig (1080 OC + i7 , 24 Gr ram) playing with HMD Q 2.0 and SS 0.85
I can eve raise for 2.0 and SS 1.0 but that's work only in space or navbeacon fights.

I'm wonder if there is a way to run ED over "revive" , for instance Asseto Corsa with nice postprocessing visuals runs great on my config using Oculus runtime and drivers

Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder ;) What one calls beautiful can be upsettingly ugly to others.

From the dev of Revive - https://github.com/LibreVR/Revive/issues/204

After comparing oculus vs vive ... I can observe that perhaps there are some things about vive and oculus too that are.... hidden or massaged (It says so?)... :)

Vive has more screen door, worst driver, yes , but It seems more clairly, and fov ...oh that fov. Need more horse power to maintain 90 fps, but when you achieved this the game it´s very funny, the performance it´s .... you need the power of sayayin.

Oculus has judder too, yes, but with the ATW or ASW now it´s hidden , sometimes it doesn´t work properly and you can see ships jumping frames in a combat meanwhile your cabin it´s at 90 fps perfectly, or when you are in supercruise sometimes planets have judder when you turn your head quickly.
Oculus has a ratio between 70-90 fps which is very playable with minimal judder effect, and vive or you have 90 fps all the time or is a disaster.

It´s more easy to obtain visible focus in the vive, worst antialiasing effect and so on... but if I have to compare with oculus , the fov and clarity are superior. With the oculus I can not focus my eyes in a text like vive... I need glasses ?

And finally, the effects and settings that can activate in the oculus are unvelievable.

To maintain 90 fps all the time in vive... almost all at low. 2.0/0.65
To maintain 70-90 fps in oculus .... VR high Oculus debug 1.3/1.0 with some more effects and settings.

My rig: 6700k 4,6ghz 32 gb ram , 980ti.

I don´t know if these problems are about steamvr issues or FD , but reading another forums and web pages unfortunately it looks like valve it´s not working properly with community, developers and so on... it´s that true? :(

PD: oculus home works perhaps identical at win7 or win10, but ..... steamvr at windows 10 with elite it´s a madness

Try removing the "facial interface", and holding the device with your hands (like a pair of binoculars). Move it around to find the so called "sweet spot", where you've got the best focus and least artefacting. (The interface snaps in at a single point at the top of the device; Take hold of it there and pull straight out.)

Whilst I, too, find the Vive a more pleasing experience over all, "clarity" shouldn't be a point in its favour here (depending on exactly which aspect of clarity we are talking about), and it should be outright difficult to get out of focus in the Rift.

Since the Rift CV1 does not have adjustable eye-relief, like the devkits that preceded it (unless you count its tilt articulation), and wasn't shipped with the alternative facial interfaces Oculus has originally intended, those of us with non-average face topologies may need to do a little bit of, hmm... "tailoring", to find a good fit -- I my case, and by the sound of it (EDIT: ...given just how drastic you describe the difference in fov): Your's as well; Getting closer to the lenses. (I have thrown away the facial interface and rigged up my Rift with welding mask type headgear. If one need just a little, one could peel off the foam pad from the interface, but that is rather destructive.)

Just fired up the latest beta and fiddled around with the settings a bit.
I must say, that once 2.2 comes out, my VR playing days are done.
There is no possible way of getting it to look and run as good as I've gotten in 2.1 with a plethora of tweaks. I've gotten 2.1 to run adequately enough to be enjoyable, though nowhere near perfect.
2.2 beta crushes all that. The graphical enhancements just require so much more power under the hood, that enjoyable fps/detail level is probably impossible.
Either it looks good and runs like crap, or it looks like a blurry, unreadable mess and runs just as bad.
I'm thinking of completely giving up. Elite was basically the sole reason I got the Vive in the first place, but it seems we're not getting any support in the near future.
It's gonna be hard to adjust back to playing on a monitor, but this constant tweaking and tinkering just frustrates me too much.

Oh, and if anyone is wondering, my rig is : I7 4790K OC @ 4.6, 16Gb ram, 1070Gtx.

I'm saying goodbye to Elite - until Vive gets properly addressed.
I'm tired of this; Elite was supposed to be at the VR front but instead we are the 'uncomfortable' and ignored part of the community.
If you track the forums you see that FDev post dozens of posts daily even in the smallest of things.

While we are ignored - months pass in this thread and we get a *reddit* comment? Sandro answering "what about the Vive?"
So long and thanks for all the fish.

Vive is a fantastic piece of gear and I will not jump over to the Rift over this though.

Don't say that Commander. Just don't use the VIVE. I went back to playing ED on my 3440x monitor and sent the Vive back. Maybe that was a mistake but I love ED too much to stop playing it

Writing what you think of the FD support here will not do much. Hardly anyone reads this thread. If you want to make your voice heard get your steam key put a negative review on steam. Do not forget to but up a bad review of Horizons as well. Up-vote bad reviews and down-vote positive.

Don't be offended, but I really don't think that is the best way to "make your voice heard".
Your idea, would put off new players.
Which would only serve to, hamper the future, of the game we all like to play.
This very thread was started by FD, so it's only right to expect, devs to read the views posted.
I also disagree, that "hardly anyone reads this thread"...........it's 76 pages long so far, so clearly it's well read.
I have to say, the lack of any communication, from the devs on this thread, is frustrating & disappointing.
ED is great, & the comments made in this thread, only want ED to be better.

No offence taken, everyone think differently and is free to act the way they want. The whole point of using steam is to make it financial noticeable. People have written that they think that the game is unplayable in the current state then I think it is fair to put up a bad review to put some pressure on FD to fix it.

I said that before, we sholud ask them after every new change log , but no one does. We should nicely pm Zac to communicate with us or other Fdev team. Meybe one day they will count how many Vive user playing or want to play ED.

Stick to the specifics and the facts. Don't personalise it and don't add every petty grievance you've ever had against the game / devs and it's all fine. If people want a Vive Elite experience, it's best they know what they're in for and if saves spending that they'll regret, it's a good thing.

@CMDR Zmidponk put HMD Quality for 2.0 and ss 0.75 in vive and at steam vr reprojection alway on (option under Direct Mode) disable AA, shadow , ambient then compare to Rift and come back to us with feedback please..

Did try it. Worse than w/2.0 SS in vive and 0.65 in ED. Much worse for test readibility. In Galaxy Map text is practically unreadable on the left-hand side panel (... Ordered a Rift.

'Unplayable' is just not true though. In my opinion, this is not even close to the 'current state'. If you are going to leave a bad review, please be as honest as possible. I can't say what your experience is on the Vive. But there are tons of us that are using the Vive and having ZERO problems. Not perfect, but 100% playable and very enjoyable. I'm sure most of us have probably just stopped reading this thread so our responses are few. If your point is that if someone was expecting to play Elite with the Vive will have an unplayable experience, I can tell you that this is not the case.

Tbh all of that depends greatly on your hardware. While not unplayable for all, most would agree it's far from how it's supposed to look.

The game should look good on default settings but it doesn't, we have to resort to ramping up sampling to hide the issues at a pretty big cost.

Yeah I agree. I literally paid through the nose for a 1080 just to get playable and it's now enjoyable but knowing how much better it should be for me and how it's still unplayable for so many who doesn't cave in like i did is what's driving me to continue watching this thread daily.

I wonder if there is a similar forum with nvidia? Frontier say they have reached out to them so maybe they might be forthcoming with some information on this.. might be a more responsive channel.

Yeah, I too have basically given up playing Elite while I save for a 1080, though that will take me some time. Will probably be able to pick up a ti version by the time i'm ready. I won't be buying anymore expansions until its either sorted out or I've bought the card though.

My game looks good on default settings. Even when I don't touch super sampling. I can read text clearly.

I bought a 1080 primarily to brute force SS for ED in the Vive. It's not worth it, it's still jaggy, the scale is still off and the performance is terrible. Don't expect too much.

Again, the scale you see in the Vive is exactly the same in the Rift.

Also, if the performance is bad on your 1080, maybe you need to revise some settings a bit more. The only reason for bad performance on a 1080 is trying to run higher settings than the game can run the Vive smoothly under.

try VR Low + 0.65 + 2.0 + SMAA. Reprojection always on. Should be 90fps on a planet or inside a port, hitch-free. Increase various settings until you can't hold 90fps anymore, then find the spot where you always have it. Keep whatever those settings are.

Alternately, you can force it down to 45fps and find whatever settings keep that mostly hitch-free.

Sucks but hey...nothing you can do about it. Until FDev improves their stuff here or until Valve releases their temporal reprojection solution, it's not going to look as good as it should in the Vive. Given how much better the game feels in my Vive compared to my Rift, it's pretty tragic that the performance isn't there.
