HTC Vive resolution and  focus

Yes it is getting silly. The "vive" issue is fixed with the steamvr workaround which has been known for quite a while. This is also needed for the Rift but you use the debug tool. The issue left is performance and that is common to both the Rift and the vive. So it you want to play elite in vr the vive is currently as good as it gets. The Rift do not produce better quality.
Not really though, the scale is still off for the Vive and the periheroy bug still hasn't been fixed
THe experience is worse than the rift as it stands.

The scale issue is still there yes, but other than that I have no issues playing with the Vive. Graphics are amazing using the steamvr ini fix.

It's not a 'fix'. There is still the underlying issue with the support of the Vive by ED that has yet to be rectified. An issue that means we shouldn't need to use the "fix" as a base requirement, only to further improve image quality.

The scale issue is in the Rift (i.e. Cmdr is looking a bit smaller than expected) and the performance as well. You need to use the Rift debug tool and do duplicate super sampling to get decent graphics just as in the vive. The peripheral bug.. well... It is really only visible during loading when the orange wireframe ship is rotating so I would say it is not an issue. So I would say it is more of a vr "bug" (bad gfx engine design) but with no enhancement tool (steamvr, debug tool) running it affects the vive more than the Rift.

What a surprise, more silence. It's almost like they are waiting for Touch to release before doing what needs to be done for the Vive... Like a bunch of other devs ;)

Cynicism aside...

I've stopped playing Elite. It isn't just the visual quality, its harder to do everything in VR and because I started my career with combat, it has now become virtually impossible to even Trade. The second you go into super cruise you are hunted down by Deadly-Elite Conda's, Pythons, FDLs, Cutters etc. and I've actually started losing money because anything you build for carrying freight, can't even run to survive and is almost instantly ganked by npc's .

Frustrated with the Engineers system too. I guess some time away will do me some good. Seeing Elite Fixed would be a big step to keeping me here though.

If by "built for carrying freight" you mean something with no shields or shields 3 sizes too small, then yeah, that won't work anymore. But a sensible shield fitted, some chaff, and mines (yes mines, they're good now) will let you do ok against most NPCs. Hopefully fighters will even things up even more, although sacrificing module space to a fighter bay might be a bit too high of a cost.

Just curious. What exactly do you conceive to be harder to do in VR?

Honest question as I've never played the game on a regular screen except for two hours of tutorials back in May 2014 (triple screen, TrackIR 5). Never even considered to go back to a picture of a spaceship.

I hardly play nowadays, but that's merely because I'm fed up wit the dumbed down AI and shallow background sim.

I look at that yellow-bordered message on the forums now and the only "exciting new thing" they could share with me at this point is a fix to this goddamn resolution issue. I don't want to hear a damn thing else anymore. Fix this!

well, I had an NPC destroy the shields of my Anaconda in what sounded like one single shot. True I was using D class shields but I did have a couple of Boosters.

Usually it goes, warp into system, set destination, get a warning, get interdicted, shields are down usually by the time i've straightened the ship up, hull takes damage while I try fruitlessly to escape, then finally manage to go to warp.

Repeat that 2 or 3 times by the time I finally dock with 3 minutes of oxygen left...

I made the mistake of trying a T-9 once, Completely obliterated before the I could even think to activate the FSD.

I'm going to have to A class a frikken Conda just so I can transport cargo. And if I want to trade any distance, I'm going to have to work on engineers to get more range out of the bloody thing.

That isn't right.

Finding places in the galaxy map and looking up details. I have mentioned that I am basically forced to use some engineer mods to survive trading with my current combat rating, I am constantly taking the headset off to look for information and the like and reading missions in game is very difficult.

I love the Vive, and I love Elite, but it has simply become annoying.

I agree. At this point I actually wish they would announce they are pushing next season update out by a year and then use that year just to work on the VR implementation. Take a year to get everything stable for VR. Implement in game settings for everything we have to do in .ini files like UI color. Modify the cobra engine with a new render built for VR and not a screen. I know that is never going to happen but I wish it would.

I haven't played Elite in about 4 months and I really miss it. At this point all I can look forward to is better GPUs come out to brute force a solution.

So are you still using your HMD for other games, or is it collecting dust?

I use it for DCS world and Project Cars. I still play ED from time to time, but it's nowhere near the amount I used to. Playing ED for a couple of hours after work used to be a daily routine, now it's just a couple of hours every other week.

It's not that VR got stale - ED did. I had all the ships I wanted, the Cutter and Corvette were a tad disappointing and I wasn't too fond of planetary landings or engineers. Had high hopes in the mission revamp, but "my" faction still hardly spawns any. I'd love to play more again, I'm just not very motiveted since february.

I see - fair enough. Probably just a combination of different playstyles and me never having used the galaxy map outside of VR. I had to lean in to read system descriptions using the DK2 in the galaxy/system maps and it's way better now with the Vive. I'm currently cruising around an Anarchy system with Painite in my hold to find some materials and hardly get any decent NPCs to fight.

I don't doubt your experience though - the only time I get attacked is when mining in high security systems with some rubbish minerals in my hold.

I started playing Elite Dangerous BECAUSE of the HTC Vive. I was looking for some kind of a flying game to test the headset with and I stumbled upon ED. Issues I have is with the text in cockpit being slightly out of focus (even when in the center of HMD screen), stations looking weird when approaching them from afar (jagged straight lines) and unable to see details properly until close enough (makes it hard to spot landing pads for outpost stations, for example) and planets seem too small when approaching them (just an observation). The rest of the ED world looks stunning to me in VR. I have accrued almost 400 hours of play to date (per Steam), I purchased Horizons and looking forward to the day where we can have crispy visuals in VR. I never played ED in 2D, except for looking at the Galaxy Map and plan routes, which is unworkable in VR (issues there too? can't select systems by looking at them; only feasible way is to manually type them in the search panel). Still, I don't plan to play ED in 2D, EVER, so for me it's either this experience or no play at all. I don't want to touch SS because it's my understanding that it doesn't improve visuals enough anyway and/or any improvement will cost you in frame rate? I'd rather keep the frame rate, which I think is way more important when dogfighting in RES High.

So at this point is the text readable on a vive at all while still maintaining some semblance of performance (i.e. not needing 2x SS)? Its still very disappointing that one of the most touted games for vr and advertised for a headset still doesnt work properly on it. Im torn between a vive and a rift. With the vive you get the whole room experience and everything you need right now, however the one single grand game that you can play on it has horrible issues. The rift doesnt have these issues but then your waiting on a whole room solution, which may be coming soon but who knows until its out, then who knows how well it will work with every other motion tracked controller game and whether or not they decide to try to lock down their peripherals like they did before

I would go with the one you want, sasquatc, don't worry about Elite, the problem will be fixed somewhere down the line and besides, you can force through some clarity if you have the graphics oompf for it

So with the current workarounds people are doing text is at least legible? I have a 1080 so I got some power, currently run elite at 2x SS since I can, but I wasnt sure if the 1080 would be able to sustain 90fps with 2xSS at that resolution
