Is Chapter 4 "make it or break it" for you?

Bear in mind that Chapter 2 and 3 were never announced to be released in Q2 and 3 respectively, so we may not ge Ch3 in Q3. The "roadmap" depicted Ch1 ad Ch4 marked as Q1 and Q4 updates with Ch2 and 3 just marked as "Content update" with no indication of quarter.

One would assume that they'd be released in the respective quarters, but you know what they say about assume...

Yes. Been waiting 2 and a bit years for a substantial exploration update. If this aint it, I aint waitin' no more.

Exactly what I would of said too. Exploration is in dire need of an upgrade... Currently I don't play as there is nothing of interest for me in any of the beyond updates other than some texture changes. Lets see if the game designers put some thought into this as both PC & JWE both show a minimalistic approach to functions.

If people have gripes they should make decent and coherent suggestions, and then simply move on if they find ED tedious.
Not really. I don't know why everyone gets so melodramatic about games to be honest.

To answer both of you, many of us were sold a vision (kickstarter, DDF) and are still waiting/hoping for that vision to be delivered. That might be why people still do care (and whing) on the forums. If someone other delivers on that vision, they will be gone in an instant.

Same here. I also would like to point out that both these titles were produced by Michael Brookes. I think Sandro tried to break from his legacy with the PP Open discussion. But I digress. I hope "Beyond" exploration changes are cool, but it's the at least thin atmospheric worlds (and better terrain generation would be great, too), along with the improvements to lighting engine (which we know they're working on) - which will give exploration an edge. I wouldn't mind paying for that if it's any good of course.

My breaking point will be when they make the game into a FPS shooter that some people want. Or they turn off the servers. Whichever comes first.

Isn't the 'make or break' simply the result of FDev stating that chapters two and three will be only minor updates so by the time 3.3 comes out, people will have been waiting the entire 3.x cycle for any meaningful content.

  • 3.0 gave us some guardian weapons, a Chieftain and a pointless C&P system that doesn't really do anything to address seal-cubbing (and arguably the only reason it was ever needed in the first place).
  • 3.1 gave us the Krait and another Chieftain skin, whilst ignoring a lot of the longstanding bugs introduced by 3.0 - the excuse for their longstanding status was "FDev don't do frequent bugfixes, they prefer to roll them all into a major update". How's that working out?!
  • 3.2 is going to be as minor as 3.1 according to FDev themselves, so unless they go beyond our expectations, expect some Squad-based stuff that will likely be frustratingly hindered by interface/instancing/mission bugs until 3.4 is launched.

Yes, I'm cynical.
Yes, my cynicism is something FDev earned all by themselves - I was optimistic four years ago but the experience has just been so disappointing; Hope is like an addictive drug or abusive relationship though, we all keep clinging on just in case the next time will be different.

3.1 already broke it for me. 3.3 could *fix* it maybe. I've stopped believing or even hoping that Elite will ever be given the overhaul and polish that it needs to be anything other than a perpetual Beta with microtransactions. To quote an infamous thread title: "Frontier Can't Deliver".

Nah
It’ll be when they announce what their big plans are post Beyond.
If it’s atmospheric planets or space legs then I’m all in.
If their big plans are just more slight improvements then I’m out.

I don't put stock in big plans even. Not from Frontier. I was cautiously optimistic about Beyond when they announced their "big plans" but they always do the worst possible version of every idea they announce. Wing missions are possibly the longest awaited most anticipated Epic Fail of a feature in Elite's entire history. I'll be excited when they DO SOMETHING worthwhile. They can announce space legs and ship boarding tomorrow and I DO NOT CARE until I see it working. Otherwise you can assume that "ship boarding" means something like you fire a "boarding limpet" onto the hull of the enemy ship which uploads your Holo-Me onto the ship's computer if there happens to be an emtpy chair. But even dumber than that. Something no sane human can even image. That's what they'll do.

Holo hacking. It was funny until I realized you might be right.

For myself, the "make or break" is a result of waiting four years for any serious exploration development to occur. I'm done waiting, and I'm done playing, and the only reason I haven't uninstalled and moved on is because Frontier finally has an exploration update in the works.

Now I'm just waiting to see how it pans out. If they put in a serious effort to make up for the four year dearth and add some interesting game play to exploration then I'll play again. If 3.3 fails to do that then I'm uninstalling and walking away with fond memories. What I'm not doing though is waiting past 3.3. Patience does have limits.

Come on... You'll see what the DLC adds too, and then 4.0... and then....?

Seriously though, it may be the DLC, or 4.0 brings in atmostpheric landings, so delivers part of what you might want.

In short, this is the position I'm in too. I've given up playing after lack lustre release after lack lustre release. So I'm hoping a significant direction change means 3.3, or the Q4 DLC or ED 4.0 finally adds some long overdue quality content. Well, enough to bring me back for some hours...
