Newcomer / Intro My Return to ED ......

The Cargo Hatch is a door at the bottom of your ship that has to open in order to put cargo in, or take cargo out. If it's disabled (in game) you can't do either of those things, even while sitting in a station.

The setting in Coriolis doesn't affect the setting in-game, of course. It's just a display.
Yes, I understand Coriolis's relationship with the actual ship settings. Corioliss' settings are made by you, for you to record accurately or the otherwise.

PS Road To Riches. Don't do it. Not until you understand exploration better, and have bumbled about doing it yourself, at least.

It'll ruin the experience by short-cutting the process.

That's just my opinion of course.
Yes, somewhere at the back of my mind I can hear someone saying avoid R to R. And I've had no trouble doing so. Too bloody busy here at the Forum ...... 😂
You'll answer for yourself the question of whether road to riches gives you something you want in your game play. It's the fastest way to make credits in a Hauler. It's the fastest way to get exploration data to sell to Felicty Farseer the engineer who wants a certain amount of credits worth of exploration data sold to her to give you access to her grade 1 to 5 engineering services where you will have needed to sell her about 24 million to get access to grade 5. She also wants a unit of meta alloys which is another little mission to go on. She engineers FSDs, power plants to grade 1 which is enough for exploration ships and she can also do light weight modifications to sensors to help with jump range. You don't need her to do FSD engineering if you go for the Engineered FSD V1. I used her for my Anaconda FSD to grade 5.
If you want to learn to map planets using the Detailed Surface Scanner (shooting probes) for any reason (some missions require it) do find a good YouTube video to show you how. It will save you a lot of time.

I only used road to riches for early credits in a Hauler and for selling to Felicity Farseer and one or two others as a quicker way to gain reputation with them. I don't use it any more.

What's the relationship between R2R and Felicity ?
Do you only get to Falicity through R2R ?

I reinstalled it, Saved it and it's fine. See below.

It's only when I copy the site address and paste it here that I have trouble, or maybe did ...... let's see, Look below .....

And it didn't. It's greyed out and the Cargo Hatch is disabled. :(
When you save a ship on your computer, the data representing your ship specification is saved in a browser cookie (small data file) on your computer.
When you get a link to share here, a different piece of computer code is encoding and decoding your ship specification data into the web site address (aka URL) query string - it's part of the website address. That bit of code obviously has a fault in it resulting in the greyed out cargo rack. Just have to ignore it.

No relation at all.

R&R is just a method someone came up with to find already-discovered high-value bodies to scan in a short time (thus getting large payouts). It's not 'exploration' in my opinion, at all.

But the game does not differentiate, and will happily grant you ranks and credits for doing it.

Don't get caught up in worrying about Felicity or any of the engineers at this point. That's a whole 'nother topic and a huge can of worms. In time. When you get to the point that regular outfitting can't quite get what you need out of a ship. Then start learning engineering.

Thanks for that. It's nice to know what it is even if I can't fix it.

Felicity is a retired explorer (old school ASP X pilot) who now customises ships for explorers.
This is what the engineer Felicty Farseer can do:

There are a number of requirements you must meet to gain access to her services.
1. Gain exploration rank Scout - which you get by selling your first 270,000 credits of exploration data. Road to Riches is the fastest way to achieve high value exploration sales so you will be scout or higher first time you sell data doing this. Earth like worlds are worth around 1 million each. When you get this rank, a message will pop up in your ship's inbox with an invitation from her.
2. Bring her a unit of meta alloys - there is a planet you can go to and use an SRV to get this.
3. I think you get grade 1 access to her services at this point, but you may have to sell her a certain value of exploration data - fastest way to get is Road to Riches.
4. If you ever want access to her higher grade services you need to sell her more exploration data - fastest way to get is Road to Riches.

Assuming you get the Engineered FSD V1, when you finally fit it to a Phantom and intend leaving it there permanently, Felicity can be used to add the special effect "Mass Manager" which gets you an extra 1 to 2 ly jump range. If you move the FSD to another ship, the mass manager effect is lost (it's specific to a ship) but can be applied again.
You also need various materials for Felicity to use in doing these modifications.

Knowing this in advance, once you get to scout rank as an explorer and fetch her a meta alloys, you could choose to sell your exploration data to her to make progress toward accessing her services.

But you should of course do anything and everything you find fun in between taking steps on any engineering projects you choose to do.

Yes to all of this ^^^
I don't do R2R any more because I don't need to and its not real exploration - I do use the DSS to map Earth like and water worlds I am first discoverer for - it's my duty as an explorer :)
I'm just pointing out that if you do do R2R in the near term, the data sales can be used to help you access Felicity's services so you don't end up doing R2R any more times than necessary. I found it irritating that I was doing R2R yet again to please Felicity, when if I had known in advance what her requirements were, I could have sold her exploration data I had collected sooner. You first exploration data sales will not be to Felicty, not least because you won't be able to find her until you reach Scout rank.
My suggestions are about minimising the amount of R2R you do. But engineering is a little way off for you yet.

I've never leveled her by using Exploration data (in any of my various alt run-throughs). It's one way of doing it quickly, but when you're a new CMDR there's no reason to do it quickly. You'll level her up just by doing your first upgrades anyway.

It's a good tip for more experienced CMDRs though.

I may well have been misinterpreting how levelling up worked at the time. Felicity was the first engineer I ever used.

Just landed. I'm on Planet ! It's covered in ice. In fact, it might be totally ice. It's my second Planet landing out of the 6 courier missions I've just completed. The first planet landing was a bit scary, but it went without a hitch as did all the missions. The only other thing of interest that happened was that I got a bit close to a couple of Stars and did a bit of accidental scooping. The Scoop just came out and just as quickly retracted. Ha!
Anyway, I see there are posts for me to read (that's nice), however, I'm too tired at the moment, but I will read and reply tomorrow. Good night team. 😘

Congrats! You are off to a great start. Fun times :)

Great post. Most informative. However ......
If dealing with FF means I have to behave unethically in gaining her services (this includes using R2R),
or FF behaves unethically with others,
or others who deal with FF are unethical,
or FF behaves unethically with the information she receives from me and others,
or the information FF receives is unethical,
I won't use her services.

I will only play ED in a manner I try and live my life in reality.

On a lesser issue, quoting for above:
"But you should of course do anything and everything you find fun in between taking steps on any engineering projects you choose to do."
Does this mean when working with or for FF, life is not fun ? :(

This sounds as though R2R is not ethical, to be avoided, only done by necessity, a quick way to earn credits but there's a 'but' .......

I think this may be a good thing. My focus at the moment is Fuel Scooping. ;)

What does "level" mean in these context ?
Thanks.

Just a word on my Hauler, Manita 2.
She sees more responsive, in fact when targeting a hyperspace jump, a little too so. I'll need to get an Engineer to adjust it.
She's passed a target before I get any time to slow her down! It's ok though. I quickly double back, but it's a bit embarrassing when seeking permission to land. 🤭
Fuel capacity seems so much more than with Manita, which is reassuring.
There'll be lots more I'm sure, and consequently, I'm in no rush to upgrade to a ....... DBX is it ? 🤔

One question:
Is there any chance I can view her while in space, out of the hanger, actually in flight, external of the cockpit ?
Thanks
