Newcomer / Intro My Return to ED ......

It is usually the case that the basic ship is only a fraction of the total amount you spend by the time you have bought all the good specifications modules for it.

Exploratory data is gathered in several ways, and you need to watch a video guide for this:
If your ship fly's close enough to planets to fully detect their nature, they become discovered automatically - this is low value exploration data. You can use the basic DScanner to "honk" the system and find out how many bodies it has - this is low value exploration data. Then use the Full Spectrum Scanner (FSS) to "discover" the nature of other planets and moons in the system without needing to supercruising up to them - this is moderate value exploration data.
I only have a DSS at this stage. Besides, I'm focusing on Courier Mission and shortly Fuel Scooping at the moment. Gaining exploration data is more just accidental and I'm happy to treat it that way.
The road to riches list tells you which systems have Earth Like World's and Water World's and the last digit of the system name is the planet number to supercruise to. When in range you use the Detailed Surface Scanner (DSS) to shoot probes at the planet to map it. That map data is exploration data that is high value - around 1 million credits for each Earth Like World (ELW) and Water World (WW). High metal content world's have good value to map in the 200,000 to 600,000 range. If you map planets using the target number of probes or less, the exploration data is worth a bit more.
Again, not part of my interest at the moment.
If your ship is destroyed, you lose any exploration data you have not sold at Universal Cartographics at a station.
If you are still in a station, go to Universal Cartographics now. You should see you have at least a little data to sell just from traveling here.
You can only sell data for locations at least 20ly from the station you are in. When you have a lot of data to sell, it is shown in pages. You sell one page at a time.
When I got to Colonia I had about 15 pages of data to sell.
As said, you need to watch one of the road to riches YouTube videos to learn how to do this.

My only real regret in my ED journey was spending so long doing road to riches in the Hauler I did skip the DBX and went straight for the ASP X
:)

Back in the day we had no 'road to riches'. I got my credits to AspX by doing a rare goods trading loop.
Cobra mk III -> T6 -> AspX.
Oh, those pesky locusts (DBX / DBS) didn't exist yet then. ;)

I more or less ignored combat for quite a while and skipped the Cobra MK III too as I did general trading and combat in the 1984 version of Elite.
When I decided to actively do some combat, I used a Cobra MK III for a short while to get the hang of it. That's another nice general purpose early game ship, but perhaps not an obvious stepping stone if you're focusing mostly on exploration. I'm glad I went back and used the Cobra for a while too.
Edit: I've never managed to identify rare good trading loops - I'd like to have a go at them regardless of credits earned at some time, but would like to maximise what credits you can earn by doing them. Long distance trading is appealing, especially if it makes sense to do it in an Anaconda.

I realised what a mistake that was when I picked up a DBX out of curiosity long after buying an Anaconda, Krait II and Phantom. I should have done Hauler road to riches just long enough to get the credits for the DBX and then switched to that. Have your sound volume at a good level for the first time you hit boost in the DBX 😍😛
Ha! Wouldn't miss it for the world .......

You have it disabled in the power section.
Oh! I'm surprised you can see that. I'll check it out. Thanks for that.
Your machine should not be locking up as you describe from the server outage. Have you tried rebooting your computer after? That’s perplexing.
Rebooting is my only option. And is accompanied by all the other things I have to do.
However, I won't be flying on Thurs around 5.00 pm anymore. Not unless I can find out from Frontier their maintenance and updating timetable.

Can you kill the Elite Dangerous program from the task manager? That might free it up, too. I've had it hang on exit a few times and that fixed it.

As far as I know the weekly maintenance is always at 7:00 UTC Thursday.

There may of course occasionally be other server downtimes, usually announced in the forums.

I think it's just in Coriolis, not in the game.

Just click the line it's on (where it says Disabled) and it'll show back up.

If that doesn't work, then just ignore it :)

Yes, thanks for this. I just know I've seen somewhere from Frontier making announcements about forthcoming updates. I can see it in my mind's eye in red writing ..... Ha !

PS Road To Riches. Don't do it. Not until you understand exploration better, and have bumbled about doing it yourself, at least.

It'll ruin the experience by short-cutting the process.

That's just my opinion of course.

Yes, somewhere at the back of my mind I can hear someone saying avoid R2R. And I've had no trouble doing so. Too bloody busy here at the Forum ...... 😂

I see it's called a Cargo "Hatch". I clicked on it and it's become enabled.
The Cargo Rack is in the other list right of this one. It's already showing enabled.
That whole section of Coriolis is designed to help you adjust your module priorities and stuff, for builds that are very power-tight.

Designing a ship build is a complex task, and also very personal. I love tinkering with ships and optimizing them for my intended usage and personal preferences. It requires a lot of knowledge and experience to know a) what you actually want, and b) how stuff works in a build.

For now, though, you have a good working Hauler ready to do some missions and things. Time to enjoy it for a while before moving on.

You'll know when to move on because you'll find yourself thinking that the Hauler isn't up to the tasks you want it to do! That may take a long while, it's all up to you though.

The Cargo Hatch is a door at the bottom of your ship that has to open in order to put cargo in, or take cargo out. If it's disabled (in game) you can't do either of those things, even while sitting in a station.

The setting in Coriolis doesn't affect the setting in-game, of course. It's just a display.

I reinstalled it, Saved it and it's fine. See below.

It's only when I copy the site address and paste it here that I have trouble, or maybe did ...... let's see, Look below .....

And it didn't. It's greyed out and the Cargo Hatch is disabled. :(
