Some graphics settings questions for new VR guy

I went ahead and ordered a Rift S on sale, so now I have some questions. I doubt I'll be able to keep my ultra settings for VR, so what settings can I scale back without greatly diminishing the visual quality? Worded another way, which settings are GPU intensive but don't really add that much to the overall visual experience? FWIW, I really don't want to go back to flickering disco elephant butt leather shadows!

My other question is a simple noob question - does vsync in VR act the same way as it does on a monitor? I hate screen tearing, and I often find on my setup that vsync-on gives a nice stable visual fluidity. My monitor doesn't support Freesync, however. Does VR? Does the Rift's "lost frames compensator" (whatever that is called) smooth out tearing, or do I just want to turn vsync on and target 80 fps?

Speaking of low framerate, there are times when I might want to crank the settings back up to ultra and just turn my head real slowly to take in the high fidelity view. Does anyone else do this?

First thing, if you haven't already I'd recommend installing drkaii's EDProfiler (https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php/262552). It makes tinkering with graphics settings far easier and lets you have different "profiles" (collections of settings, even key bindings) for different purposes (e.g. so you can switch between your VR settings and your non-VR settings with a single click prior to launching the game).

As for the other stuff, I used to write about this a lot but now my VR tinkering has stopped all I can really do is point you to a couple of old posts and hope they're still reasonably valid:

I'm not sure you need to worry about vsync. I've never experienced "tearing" in VR myself, even with the old GTX 970 I used to use.

VR eh? Oh boy ... you're gonna LOVE it! :D (I hope)

I had PSVR for a month, and I had mixed feelings about it. Most of my gripes (low resolution, low-quality graphics) will likely be addressed by the Rift S. I absolutely LOVED playing Skyrim in VR, and I just bought the PC version at 70% Steam sale. I also grabbed Subnautica, a train simulator for VR, and I'll be downloading DCS when my 2nd hard drive arrives. I'm still on the fence about X-plane for VR, as it's a bit more expensive... I'll probably spend the next couple of days browsing Steam's VR catalog, as my headset won't arrive until the middle of next week.

In addition to what Alec has said above - the equivalent “screen-tear” for VR is a juddering view, not very pleasant. You’d have to be really cranking up the visuals to drop below 40fps, which is when ASW (the “compensator”) fails to keep up.

If I remember correctly, you’ve got a GTX 1660 in your laptop (or was it the “ti”?) - when I was on my GTX 1060 6GB I had all the settings turned up high/ultra but with SS/HMD Quality both at 1.0 - the game frequently dropped into ASW, but that just meant a few wobbly HUD lines for me.

Skyrim VR on PC is a huge step-up from the PSVR, get it, get it modded and get amazed all over again. Don’t forget the VR Enhancement mod for Subnautica, I couldn’t play without it.

Oh, and if you fancy punishing yourself, MotherVR, the VR mod for Alien Isolation...

Get the following (as finances allow - some are/were free) Google Earth VR, Beat Saber, Superhot, Lone Echo, Robo Recall, Stormland - I doubt you'd regret any of them.

...and then, if you haven't got superhuman self discipline, you'll spend the next couple of weeks messing around with Skyrim mods, only ever actually launching the game for a few seconds now and again, to make sure that last one didn't break it. :p

I've already done this in 2D Skyrim, so I have a good idea of what I want. I can't wait to see the lovely modded NPCs in all their glory in VR :D

A few more suggestions:

If you’re partial towards Star Wars at all then get the Vader Immortal trilogy - though the main “experience” can be played through within a pair of hours, I’ve had much more time in the Lightsaber dojo and it’s the pzoomswish toy I’ve always dreamed of.

A decent manshoot is Pavlov VR - pretty much CounterStrike, loads of fan made maps, bot matches, still getting new modes and stuff added.

The Doom3 VR mod for the BFG version is much better than the proper DoomVFR in my opinion (especially since DoomVFR stopped working correctly with Oculus headsets).

...and a freebie suggestion - the ISS tour, zero-G locomotion like Lone Echo with bonus docu-vids. Find out how Cosmo/Astronauts do pees & poos right near the amazing cupola view windows!

I have just picked up Rift S too, as in yesterday evening. CV1 user. Lovely clarity but unsure about whether I will keep it. My IPD is 68 which is just out of its sweet spot and I think it made me feel odd BUT I was super tired yesterday (bonkers week) with a fatigue headache so will try again tonight. (I'm only tired so we will see). However my GF is right on the 63.5mm and instantly said she loved it.

Can't believe no one has pointed you towards Asgard's Wrath (new and oculus exclusive maybe?) Such a good, meaty, long game. Google it.
Don't forget Assetto Corsa. Get the first one not AC Competizon, the new one, bc the original is cheap and you can pick up the DLC cheap too. Fab physics, I think it looks great and runs like a dream. I have both, only play AC.

As a counter point to above I was very disappointed with Vader, £8 per literally 30-40min episode of Vader. Then look at Asgard which blows it away. Vader standing still dojos are good. Asgard's arenas are so much better.

Have fun!

Heard great things about Asgard's Wrath - just haven't got that one yet. Yes the Vader Immortal things are very short, but they're well done and the lightsaber dojo's let you live out that dream of being a Jedi and do it really well.

Anyone using X-Plane in VR? If Microsoft wasn't releasing a new flight sim next year, I'd grab X-Plane in a heartbeat even for the 2D experience. In 2D it looks like MFS blows X-Plane out of the water. However, if the VR experience is good in X-Plane, then I might go ahead and cough up the $40. IIRC, MFS doesn't support VR.

Do you have to exit the game to switch between VR and "pancake" mode? I ask because I might prefer exploring (which is 99% FSS) using my monitor, but then if I find a system of interest, I could pop on my VR helmet for the visual part of the exploration. If I have to log out to switch to VR and back, it's not the end of the world, though obviously it would be nice to switch back and forth "on the fly".

Yup, I'm afraid so ... unless there's some voodoo I'm unaware of.

Edit: that said, when you're in VR there is still an ED display on your monitor too. You can increase the resolution of this back up to full screen (although it tends to revert back to very low-res - 800x600? - next time you start the game in VR - or it used to) but, since it's basically what your left eye is seeing in VR the field of view is very narrow. It might be enough to operate the FSS on screen I suppose? Worth a try anyway.

I haven't tried XPlane but have tried Aerofly FS 2 Flight Simulator which is fully VR, even touch controllers.

You might want to read the feature list. It's more than sufficient for me but I think it is lacking things like ATC. Nice and detailed cockpit and scenery though!

Hi,

I have just purchased a Rift S and have got it running and for the most part it's pretty good.
Stations however look horrible (jagged edges and wandering pixels etc.)

I am very new to VR so maybe I'm missing something, but I cannot seem to find any settings with regard to HMD/anti aliasing etc. (which I have read elsewhere will help with the above problem) within the settings.
My profile was 'Custom' so I changed it to 'VR Ultra' which improved things vastly but stations and structures still have flickering lights especially when viewed from a distance.

I'm going to look at that ED launcher tool mentioned above but in the meantime, does anyone know where anti-aliasing and other settings are with regards to VR?
many thanks

Specs:
i7 7700k
GTX 1080Ti
16GB RAM etc, etc, etc.

I've parked one of my favorite ships at one of my favorite outposts for my first VR experience in ED. From here I'll be going on a sight-seeing tour of various cool outposts, stations, bases, etc.

@justice25 This is what I'm worried about, as I do love the clarity of my 2D display. On the other hand, it can't be as bad as PSVR was, and I still found enjoyment playing certain games on that device.

This game is excelent in VR
Is the entire game VR ready, or is VR just a single mission like many other games (ROTR, SWBF, AC7)?
