[Speculation] Commanders, no walking inside your ships for Odyssey

Well if I remember correctly walking around inside our spaceships is actually something that David Braben mentioned in an early kickstarter interview video a long time ago. I think we can be certain that it is still a 'possibility'. But I would hazard a guess that it is highly unlikely, unless the devs can come up with significant gameplay to go with it, which I doubt they ever will. I stand by the opinion of the OP that we will not be getting this feature, simply because I can't see any gameplay reason for the devs to spend years of design work painstakingly modelling the interiors of every single ship, some of which are the size of aircraft carriers for something that people will get bored of after a few hours. I know, some of you want it. Some of you REALLY want it. But you will get bored of it pretty soon, and most people just don't know whats good for them, they can't look into the future and visualise how it would actually be. How the experience will soon become tiresome and pointless.

The devs will still say that it's a possibility, because they want to sell the game DLC, and given how many people want this thing, the possibility of them getting it will help sell Oddessy, so they will never say never. But I seriously doubt we will get walking around inside ships and stations, simply because there is little to no gameplay to add with such a feature.

People need to think rationally, and be more realistic. It's the same with VR, where Obsidian Ant made a video a few days ago explaining how much work it would take to make a decent VR FPS that doesn't make people want to vomit. Maybe if that was the whole game it could be a thing, but we are talking about a game that already exists and these are only modules added every few years to an existing game that is still a commercial endeavour that can't lose money by spending exessive time and resources on things that are just not going to work.

Observe Star Citizen and it's development. Try to learn something from what you see there.

And think about it this way. I've seen and heard a lot about the new MSFS, where the devs seems to have spent many years developing a scale model of the whole, or at least most of the whole planet Earth. Do you want to be able to not just see you own house but walk around inside it? Imagine how cool it would be to walk into a virtual representation of your own kitchen and make a virtual cup of tea? I know, this sounds so cool. But where is the gameplay? And after you've done it once, how often are you going to want to repeat that action? An action with no consequences?

I really hope the devs are spending their time getting the planet environments right, together with the procedural flora and fauna and a mixed set of procedurally generated planetary buildings we can walk around to make an interesting and diverse addition to the Elite game, and not wasting their time and money 3d modelling the toilet cubicle in my Cobra III.

I will go to my real kitchen now to get a real beer from my real fridge, and dream about walking on alien landscapes not dream about walking around the inside of my house or spaceship in VR because I'm certain that computer games are supposd to be about escapism from the confines of our meagre existence not reconfirmation of it.
I also want the planets done right, more important.

Another difficulty with in cockpit first person is gravity, there's no artificial gravity so in space we would be floating in zero g.

One of the reasons I've wanted first person in cockpits was to give people a better idea of scale, something non VR can be difficult to gauge. But being able to walk outside will certainly do that. I'm not bothered about rifling through cupboards and hiding the in the toilet a la Star Citizen. I would like to walk around the confines of the cockpit and around stations as originally discussed, it was the main future development Braben Sandy and others talked about in the original videos. Hopefully that will come later.

You really have a pretty low concentration span, don't you? I stand by what I said in the original post and have never said anything else. Maybe you should look up the dictionary for the word "contradiction".

I'm not changing my mind at all so you must be either delusional or a troll: I have a very low opinion of both.

If what I wrote in the original post turns out to be false, I'll happily admit I was wrong because we ALL will get one interesting feature for EVERYONE to enjoy.

I did not confirm or deny anything, I just stated the fact: mod changed the title of the thread. I mean, what's your point?

I see... You are one of those.

Hahahaha! Okay, whatever floats your boat. I can't be bothered repeating everything and I doubt anyone wants to see a 20 quote page of politick.

Anyway, I'm off to talk to a cabbage - I expect it to be a little less angry, a little more engaging, and a darned sight more interesting.

Edit - I thought for fairness I should say that you've made some good points in other places - in case the troll in me seems overpowering...?!

Firstly, I am not angry, by all means. Actually, I am, but only at the devs, because they refuse to act professionally.
And secondly, that cabbage thing won't work, trust me, I've tried it before.

Probably solved with some magboot handwavium.

It's of course a bit tricky because the supercruise is complete fantasy as such where gravity doesn't really apply. "IRL" you could of course generate stable 1g with thrusters in normal space.

There is a lot of good reason in your saying and i agree with you in many points. I also havent thought about being an one-time thing which makes sense.

I believe it adds a new dynamic to the game and can also bring more revenue. Since people pay a lot of ARX to have cockpit assessories, FDev could make some money allowing us to add some cool features to the ship's interior, such as interior painting, computers to access galnet/missions etc and even NPCs.

The thing is, i believe it wouldnt be that hard to design and implement ship's interior. It's like creating an FPS map with a lot less complexity and size. How many starports are there? A ship's interior would require waaaaaaayyy less detail than a coriolis port's interior for example. Have you seen how crazily detailed those are? And i'm not talking only about its interior, get an SLF and fly around it, you can literally feel like Luke Skywalker hovering a Death Star. Now considering how many starports there are vs 32 ships...

Maybe it would be difficult to keep the interior of the stations/bases not boring and all-the-same looking style, but algorithms can attenuate that.

It is in deed a new dynamic added to the game that looks to be more appealing to the current customers than to potential new ones which would be grabbed by the "walk in planets" known slogan. But hey, you gotta sell it internally too right?... or would we all buy it despite it not having ship's interior? oh well..

Well I don't speak for the Devs as none of us do (bad grammar!), but I hear your point for sure. I just don't think anything can be ruled out, or explicitly ruled in, until they say so - it's a sucky situation being excited for anything, and not getting any answer, let alone the one you want. That's all I had been trying to explain dude.

But you are bang on about the cabbage, he's a right rude little sod. I'm going to try talking to the koi in the pond instead - he's called Bones, as a cryptic nod to the original Star Trek, not that the joke didn't go way over the heads here at home...! There's no way to make some people smile, right?! ;)

Well to be far, once you've seen one planet, you've seen them all. but the interiors would all be hand-crafted and unique as opposed to the masses of computer generated dust and ice wastes.

I have wondered for quite a while why all ships have the same cockpit layout. ok the eye candy is different but the actual end user layout is identical. Do you think that this is to make it easier for the user to know where everything is? or just that the devs were lazy?

I have driven many different vehicles in my time and each manufacturer has a slightly different layout, hence the driving a car and using the windscreen wipers as indicators for a while until you remember that they are on the other stick.
Not as funny as repositioning the reverse gear where first gear used to be! bloody BMW!
Although I have never thought of the handbrake lever to be the collective.
Also while I'm on, you pay good money for a ship so why does it look slightly unfinished? I mean wires hanging all over the place etc etc.

Probably a bit of both. Also makes revising the UI easier when you don't have to go through all hud models and see if they work for VR.

I think it is just a way to create some personality for the ships - some Millennium Falcon feeling for the Conda, cyberpunk strip club feeling for the Cutter - interior being easier to create once than HUD.

yeah I suppose but a loose wire in any position is a trip hazard in zero g

To be fair, most of the cockpit design decisions like absurdly limited views (lets not get to the existence of windows themselves) make little sense from the practical point of view.
yeah a bit like why the Blohm & Voss BV 141 was developed (check it out I bet you haven't seen anything like it).
Did no one inform the future that windows in a space vehicle are a very very very bad idea, when a decent camera and monitor setup would be a lot safer and give a greater view of what is going on outside.

Well...

We all suspected it, but now it's been "confirmed" that we'll be able to walk only on the planetary surfaces. Devs were really specific about that one. So, everyone who hoped that we'll finally be able to jog around our Anaconda, tough luck.
There was already an external article stating we won't be walking around our ships when Odyssey lands. The reporter would have got this info from talking to the devs so I don't understand why you would think the opposite to be true. Just being hopeful perhaps? Anyway, it doesn't mean it won't happen eventually in the future but then you could say the same about VR.

There was?

I was not aware of that interview at the time of my posting.

I am ok with this. I would much rather that they work on a good flight model for atmospheric flight, make the visuals really good, work on things like caves and more varied landscapes, give us weather patterns and so on ... get all of that right for this release and give us spaceship interiors later.

I believe walking inside your ships is very important for the mentioned Neil Armstrong moment, as through this kind of immersion you get the impression of actually being inside a refuge and safe space like your ship and can intentionally go out, which is opening the door and make a step outside. I understand that Elite Dangerous is super complex and the developers have to focus on certain features and being in a bar is one right step into the right direction in terms of immersion. But I think walking in ships is almost as important as walking out side the ship :)

Because they are focusing heavily on science for their surfaces, then they really need to include caves in my opinion. They mentioned dry water basins which would form caves no? (I'm not a scientist so maybe I'm wrong.)

Ship interiors would be gr8 but I think that'll be in an update later down the line (hope I'm wrong).
