Thargoid Attacks: Where, When and What you can do about it

Short term update -
HIP 18077 as referenced in galnet - checked at 09:00 servertime,

20221028095647_1.jpg

No visible thargoids, caustic damage/green clouds have appeared at Previously damaged megaships, logs are still the ones from years back referencing Pirates. Reports so far indicate other damaged megaships in california that have been located were also from the pirates era, featuring no active thargoid presence/response.

Andecavi - despite galnet reports to the contrary, thargoids remain present as of ~10:16 servertime.

It's starting to get a bit tinfoil-inducing, having galnet reports prove inaccurate =p

Good day commanders, I would like to ask a question. If any station can be attacked by Thargoids, can this affect Cruicial Engineer unlock commodities? Say can Thargoids attack Futen Spaceport thus rendering Fujin Tea into a valuable low supply commodity until the Attack has been reverted? Apologies if the question has been asked before, thank you for reading this query. o7

I had so much hope for this update. New mechanics and excitement. Only to be met with broken menus, broken carrier navigation, constant crashes, no interceptors anywhere(looking for hours at thargoid CZs). Is this game ever going to actually run well? We can't fight bugs we can't find. Star Citizen runs better .

Frontier have said everywhere is potentially vulnerable.

How literally to take that we won't know until the Thargoids get as far as attacking somewhere relevant, which is likely to be at least a few months away.

So unless I do these long ass thargoid conflict zones alone in solo to fight off this incursion in the bubble I can't join in because of gankers. Well thanks a f ing bunch fdev & gankers - #effthebubble

The one time i try to do something in open with other people - what a f ing joke.

How about two options for Open:

1. Open - I don't mind having my gameplay ruined by .

2. Open - No pvp - here we can play nice

Is that so f ing difficult?

Honestly I agree, I really don't see why Elite needs open PVP at all. PVP could easily be active only in warzones or something between combatants that are signed up (somehow) with the warring factions, or between rival factions in PP.

Anyway - Best bet for now is to use private groups, you'll be able to find likeminded people in the AXI discord at least :)

There are also many activities you can do in solo that aren't fighting Tharogids, and also you can take missions to kill Thargoids from stations which you can do in solo - you don't need to complete conflict zones. Completing any missions counts towards helping the system.

I am sure that these questions are answered somewhere in this long thread, but I am not finding them. I am a long-term trader. I think I have been in my T9 for at least four years, not counting the Krait Phantom rigged for exploration.

Up until now I have focused on bulk trading and exploring. I just got off a carrier that brought me back from Colonia. I interrupted a, it was supposed to be, extended exploration in order to come back and try to figure out how I can best serve humanity in this time of crisis.

  • As a dedicated trader, what can I be doing to aid in the war?
  • Where do I need to go to do it?
  • What do I need?
    • By need:
      • what type of ship (Should I rely on my trusty old T9, or Should I use a T10. . . )
      • how should it be equipped
        • by that, do I need guns? I have always relied on running away
        • what shields or special things I haven't even thought of?
Oh, and the where to do it, it would be best if there were a place in Imperial space. I know all of humanity is in this together, but the idea of helping the federation . . . well, it just doesn't set well.

Just a general heads up on the AX combat. Within an AX zone, or station or megaship where you can sign up within the instance to fight goids - if you do it in Open, you can just tag the interceptors in the instance, and the other Commanders with more experience and better kitted ships will collaboratively take down the interceptor and you still get credit.

It's a nice way to learn the ropes. Just watch the comms for gankers...

For trading opportunities you want to head to systems that are either in "Thargoid Alert" or "Thargoid Invasion" state. You can see them on the galaxy map by turning on the thargoid war mode, they will be centered around the maelstroms (currently there are 3 of these with 5 more on the way). At some point in the future there will be systems in recovery state but we're not there yet (everything is still on fire).
The ports in those systems can either be abandoned, damaged or normal. Abandoned means they're closed. Damaged means they will have thargoids in the area but you can still dock there if you're up for the challenge. You can get two types of trade missions from the damaged and normal stations:
  • Supply X units of Y commodity. Where you collect them from is up to you. A lot of these are wing missions and the overall credit reward will be less than the cost of the goods; this is because they're meant to be done as a team with each person supplying a portion, splitting the costs but each person gets the full reward.
  • Transport X wounded people (they are in pods so get treated like cargo). The destination will be the nearest rescue ship (typically between 100-200 LYs away).
You can also switch out some or all of your cargo racks out for economy passenger cabins, there's plenty of refugees wanting to flee the systems (destination will again be the nearest rescue ship).

I would not recommend using a T9. Thargoids may hyperdict you when jumping into the invaded systems, and they can also interdict you while you're supercruising to the stations. In both cases they will be instantly aggressive and start attacking unless you can outrun them. You want a ship that can boost over 400m/s, ideally over 500m/s. If it's too slow the thargoids are likely to chase you down and mass lock you, and fighting them with a trade ship isn't really an option. If you're going to visit damaged stations a field neutralizer is recommended, since if an interceptor jumps in it will trigger its EMP and shutdown any unprotected ships for roughly 30 seconds - this is especially dangerous if you're flying towards a ground settlement and your ship suddenly becomes a rock.

Best thing to help out is ignore the Thargoids alltogether and let them destroy Humanity, the good news it will take Fdev with them and hopefully they can give us content for everyone to enjoy without tedious overcomplicated grind play :)

How much is known about the relative effectiveness of different ways of opposing the Thargoids: fighting them, carrying refugees, delivering supplies? What I mean is, if I have fixed time to play, which activity will be the best effect in the Thargoid war?

It varies depending on the war state.
