Since we've no idea whether samples will still be effective after U16, we intend to finish Njorog before the 31st. Off to the grind then...

We may help it along a bit some time tomorrow; it seems to me that M. Taranis could use a bit of a visit and make it not able to attack Trianguli Sector GG-Y c18 or Namayu, so I think we could also give Njorog a bit this weekend then ensure it is all done before the Monday after next.

Perhaps we should start making a list of Thargoid War related issues to test which ones get fixed (if any!) in the update...

Here's a few off the top of my head:
  • Thargoid hearts not glowing properly when exerted (U15 regression)
  • Thargoid interceptor AI breaks and they stop moving when reaching ~50km from settlements
  • Fires unable to be extinguished at revenant scenarios
  • Reclaimed control systems not losing their AX CZs
  • AX CZs completing/restarting before they should (usually in the middle of the hydra fight), awards the bonus payout without completing the CZ and then restarts the scenario - adding extra interceptors to deal with while the hydra(s) is still alive
  • Thargoids near starports (coriolis, ocellus, orbis) will start orbiting them when somebody using rotational correction enters the station
  • AX power restoration missions target already powered-up settlements
  • When you drop into an existing instance, interceptors are rendered with all their hearts regardless of how many they actually have left (a xeno scanner shows their true status)
  • Handing in an item for an AX restoration mission will clear all mission items of that type, making any other completed restoration missions that use the same type of item incompletable
  • AX weapon stabilisers use no power despite their module statistics saying they do
  • Partially used caustic sinks prevent re-arming when docked, and auto-eject themselves during a hyperspace jump. Or you can purge them right before changing instance and they will reload but not use up a charge.
  • If a ship with guardian modules is docked in an instance where glaives are present, it can't repair and the cost to repair shown in the HUD rapidly increases over time
  • Post-recovery systems sometimes stay in that state for an extra week, despite the UI saying <1D left when the weekly tick happens

That is quite the list; so much so that I imagine the actual activity list looking quite modest in comparison! That may need a separate topic to cover the highly-specific issues—notably with regular references here for cases such as the Conflict zones, given that I make a weekly list which is useful only while that problem remains.

There are also some other things which are not actual problems, but which we check regularly regardless. Obviously we have started withholding a delivery and selling immediately after any maintenance, which tests for a few things:
  • Stockpiling of Research samples across cycles
  • Efficacy of harvesting versus system strength
The goal motivating that is respect for time spent, especially if an upcoming large delivery were to discover it needs a few thousand more. I imagine everyone has a few things they may check just to see if it still works the same way; for example, update 15 made a few unannounced changes which affected how we outfit harvest vessels and what we do in a Control system:
  • Single class 1 Research limpets started working much faster than one from a Universal limpet, which made it worth replacing some corrosive cargo for more limpets in the case of Control systems.
  • The Control arrival patterns changed in a way which complicated a previous method but made available a new method.

A note for @Starsong and possibly @Grimscrub also; the Ascension Light seemed not to be accepting Research samples, while the Invicta should have now a modest amount extra for Njorog. Accounting for it was difficult without owning the Carrier, but I tried to keep track and I think it should have an extra 1135.

That is very strange, considering the Ascension Light has a buy order active and my main account (who doesn't own the carrier) having no issue offloading there! Still, if the Invicta was able to accept your contribution, then there's no real issue.

I delivered some scout samples there a few hours ago but was unable to deliver the cyclops samples I had so might depend what type was being dropped off

True. I didn't think about setting up a buy order for Cyclops samples.
EDIT: I've put buy orders for all four Interceptors up. If you do any more sampling runs in Njorog, you'll be fine to sell everything at the Ascension Light.

The next here will be Col 285 Sector ZE-P c6-21 later, then we have some options for the remainder of the week:
  • Guard Namayu, though with a quite high relative cost; around 2.1 times the amount to recapture it.
  • Guard Khwal, with a slightly higher total cost but much lower relative cost; around 1.4 times its recapture.
Notably M. Taranis likely will not be able to reach Namayu past the dozens of recently-cleared systems next time.

Looks like the new Launcher caused a few problems, including with me searching frantically for a way around this, which put the schedule off-course a bit. If I may ask @Phill P, is PDES still planning to recapture HIP 37844? If so then I think we can still strike Khwal from the target list; otherwise, we can clear it then turn attention onto batches of farther targets.

Nearly there for Njorog. We may even be able to get it done this tick, with any luck!

CMDR Carpets from AXI did some surveying of close-in uninhabited systems. Most interestingly, there is no slope at all for <5Ly - it's constant at 116,279 samples required. 1690288036483.png1690287993218.png

Small note
CMDR Carpets from AXI --
- Carpets is also part of the efforts/discords of PDES, Operation Ida and others, and did some hard work on Alert system data in the past ( https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachme...1/Alert_System_Progress_Values_by_Carpets.pdf ) in turn.

Just, want to be sure it isn't taken as calling dibs on their hard work.
That aside not much news from me, We're a bit over 15k for Njorog across the two carriers at this point, continuing efforts gradually.

It's roughly inverse cubic (if it was exactly halve distance for 10x difficulty, it'd be -3.322) which makes me slightly curious as to why they used the 5 LY set points for linear interpolation rather than just making it inverse ~cubic with min and max values.

It makes balance sense that it's faster than inverse square, though: the number of systems within a shell will on average (and not accounting for density differences from the galactic plane, though they'd have to get a lot bigger!) go up with the square of the distance. So if the difficulty ramp-up was only inverse-square, the difficulty per shell would be constant: if you can clear a Maelstrom down to any distance, you can clear it down to all of them because the number of systems you need to clear at each stage also drops off quickly. Inverse cubic means that not only are the individual systems (a lot!) more difficult, the total difficulty to clear that shell also increases (theoretically about linearly, though once you get within 15LY star position randomness really starts to matter!) as you get closer in.
