The Galactic Mapping Project & Historical Archive of Exploration

Thanks for the advice. Given there is nothing known about the 4th Quadrant yet (well for those reporting back here anyway) I think it would be an interesting area to start with. It would be a privilege to report back here. To allay the tedium of the emptiness of space, I'm contemplating doing a blog, I guess like others have probably done. It'll give me something to do and also document my progress.

This will actually be my second journey in to deep space, but my maiden voyage in the Live game. During the 1.2 beta I took a trip to the Witchhead Nebula then on to Barnards Loop and finally the Horsehead Nebula. I wanted to experience some of the exploration side of the game knowing it wasn't going to impact my live account, which at the time was still in a Sidewinder, and struggling to make credits!! I do recall thinking when I returned to occupied space how the hell do I land this ship!!

So with that test run under my belt I yearn for more, it's like it's calling me out there!!

Yes, nothing is currently known about the 4th quadrant. If you're planning to be away for a long time maybe explore the lower 4th quadrant, its not too far. Then with whatever money you make from that expedition upgrade to a long range Asp and head to the intermediate 4th quadrant, and beyond? :)

Those areas were going to be my next major mission goals once I've gathered more data on the Formidine Rift and upper part of the 1st quadrant regions.

I was out surveying "THE LOWER 4TH" on my last expedition and am back out there currrently. My first trip out was in a exploration tweaked cobra. It was a BH and NS hunt to get some first discovered tags out there. Cynical, yes, but the data did yield some much needed funds to get into an ASP.

This time I am about halfway up the nomad arm taking my sweet time on the hunt for earth-likes, water worlds and terraformable candidates. Its all part of my galactic 'location, location, location' show concept for when I have a way to get on the surface of these worlds.

If anyone is out that way get in touch.

Cmdr Aziraphale.

Possible Minor PoI:
I've found a terraformable water world that orbits an L dwarf and has an Ammonia atmosphere, the result is this:

Can you see the islands? I never saw something like this. Note that i was in the lightened side of the planet, not in the dark side lol.

I called it DARK WATERS. NGC 2353 SECTOR IW-V C2-0, 3818.63 Ly from Sol. Just a little bit over the Seagull.

The system itself seems to be made just for this planet to be like it is.

I haven't seen many of them, defiantly a POI worth checking out - especially when planetary landings are here. Imagine standing beside a black ocean looking at a sunset through an ammonia atmosphere!

Will add it during the next update :)

I'm glad it's of any interest.
Now heading to Rosetta, and from there stopping to be a turist. I plan to go north from the Perseus to the Carina-Sagittarius Arm in your galactic mapping Sectors 2 and 3. There are no entries there, let's have a look.

BTW, I'd definitly insert the THORN'S HELMET/SEAGULL SECTOR and the ROSETTE SECTOR, and the PLOEA THEIA HIGH RIVER thas connects them, a place super rich of water worlds, where all stars are scoopable, and bridges a low density area between arms. To me it's being a fantastic experience, almost entirely uncharted.

But i don't want to clutter your Sector 1, althought that area is empty at the moment. If you are interested let me know i can give references and some detail.

Cheers!!! This post is giving me goals and directions, keep up the work!!!!

What jump range is needed to get there? Did you have to pass by hearth and soul nebula or are you forced to cross in the perseus arm west? Can i make it with 33LY jumprange?

Its looking like in order to cross to the outer arm you will have to cross up past the heart and soul nebulas, up near where Erimus is. That is where I crossed to get out her. I am currently attempting to cross back further south of there and its not looking hopeful. As for jump range, I am in a stripped down ASP with an average jump range of about 33LY and a max of 37.8

I'm in a heavily armed Asp and also have 2 Ts of cargo (Lavian Brandy & Tobacco... to trade with the natives, if there are any ;))... so I can barely do 30 LYS.. anything above that will have no problem crossing where I did. The only issue is the Syroifoe Badlands toward the far side of the Rift, its a sea of brown dwarfs, but it may be possible to go over the top of them if it becomes an issue.

Wow, just noticed this. Awesome work Erimus. All the rep in the world to you for this effort.

May I just point out though, two major POIs that should be on Map 1.

Eagle Nebula - a boxy nebula made entirely of F type stars.
Omega Nebula - not sure how many, but at least hundreds, if not thousands of blue stars.

Both worthy of noting i think.

Cheers, I will get around to adding all the local nebula at some point. I think I'll need to make a larger map for the local region first though as the current one is getting a little crowded with data and its hard to squeeze everything on.

Has someone Mapped the Statue of Liberty Nebula/Sector yet?
Just asking as I am on my way there and will Map the whole Sector if not yet done.

Just passed by there a few days ago. The whole sector? I doubt it. The nebula itself? I would be very surprised if it hadnt been mapped yet. Theres still tons of unexplored systems and stuff out that direction though, and its worth the trip. Just dont sell my scans before I do :p.

feel free to sell the scans before I do, I will not cry I promise.

Also do take note of the badlands in that area, they like to hang out between the nebulas and get in the way.

Yea I noticed the Badlands, but am positive i can manage to not run out of fuel.
And don´t worry about your Scans, Mapping the whole System might take quite some time, and I will head over to ETA CARINA afterwards ;)

I will head over to ETA CARINA afterwards ;)

Thats the trip I took, out to the statue, then to Eta Carina and then on to NGC 3199. Im aimed for the tip of the Orion Spur now exploring some of the less obvious stuff out here. The badlands actually are more dangerous between Statue of Liberty and Eta Carina because they cut across your straight path between nebulas. Even if you can navigate it, id advise avoiding it because there is nothing out there but litterbox systems. Drop down 2 or 300 lightyears below the statue and then head to Eta Carina and youll have a lot more luck than I did.

Ok thanks for the advice :)

No problem, if your in game name is Fatbat and you're playing in open, I'll send a friend invite since were both out here.
