The Galactic Mapping Project & Historical Archive of Exploration

Hellsreach

Greetings!

I'd like to propose the Solar System of 'Hellsreach'

Hellsreach
POI Type: Exploration
Galaxy Coord: +15,000 ; -1 ; +3760 ; ~500 LY trailing and ~ 300 LY above NGC 3199 Nebula
Galaxy Map Ref: SMOJU EL-P E5-0
The solar system is just 36 million years old, yet it boasts no less than nine 'Magma'-type planetary bodies as well as 3 inline-orbiting T Tauri stars, presumably with early AB spectral lines. Some of the magma planets show conditions that would hint at liquid metallic composites being abundant on the surface in form of 'metal oceans', although visual scans do not currently support this claim. Further investigation would be appropriate.

Please see attached screenshots for revision

As always, fly safe!

Hey Kola2,

Not wanting to hijack this thread, but as someone who's been reading it recently and came across your name here, imagine my surprise when watching this video yesterday:

https://youtu.be/___lRaq-xZ4?t=29m

(Continues in Part 3...)

Apologies if you had already seen it. Did you get Cmdr Fanatics in the end? ;)
Oh, at first i thought someone had found one of my explored systems, but it's just that old video. :(

Seriously though, i know about that video, and IMO it's the best Isinona video apart from the Beta "Smuggler" and "Scourge" (No, not because i'm in it, it's just a great video overall)

And we never got Fanatics, but hey, we had fun!
(Still keeping an eye on him though, better not be razing Lave anytime soon!)

Hi Erimus!!!!
I'd like to submit a POI that is a Stellar Cartographics record breaker!!!!

PERSEUS NULL SECTOR (PHAE AIM EG-Y G6)
http://universalcartographics.org/records/furthest-black-hole-from-sagittarius-a/
POI Type: scientifical
Navigation Hazard (nothing)

It's a system with a black hole as main star, the furthest ever discovered from sagittarius a*, a very strange phenomenon in the middle of the perseus arm. I was bad and i didn't record distance from SOL, but should be around 12k ly from sol in Map 02 in the centre of the perseus arm.

I filtered the map for non main sequence to tag few neutrons, and that's what i found. Something uncommon happened here (here be monsters)
There are several black holes further away from sag, but it seems noone of them are main star, so even if the system itself is not that spectacular, it could find a place in the almost empty map 02.

I actually scanned them all at Beagle Point but only about 60% of the stuff I scanned out there ever got registered. There are whole systems I scanned that I can still view on the system panel but bear no name. I don't think the first discovery thingy was working properly back in January as I ticketed it once the first discovery feature was added in a later patch, but those tickets went ignored.

Its no big deal, just tag whatever you like out there - its all fair game :)

this "bug" is happening to me too. I had few other POI to submit in the perseus arm, i even have pictures of systems and scanned objects, but now they show as unexplored to me on system map, so i can't submit a thing. That's sad and kind of killing a lot of "metagame", considering i have my shiny excell with the list of things of interest...

Useless to ticket, at best they give you a money compensation, and i'm not interested in putting other credits in my unuesd wallet.

BTW off i go again and hopefully i will tag something interesting that will last.

I'll be submitting one that's a main star at over 41K from Sag A* once I return from my current trip.

No, not at all common. My furthest find is almost exactly on the opposite side of the galaxy from yours and there are a few in that general area. I'm also aware of a few around about the opposite side of the Formidine Rift which is a bit to the 'west' of the 'southern' most part of the galaxy. But to date, those are the only examples I've found on the outermost arms. A good example of their non-presence is the extension of the southernmost outer arm which curls along outside the Perseus Arm, albeit separated by a totally impassable rift (you need to be a bit west of directly south of Sol to cross it). I went along there for about 20,000 LY and the only non-main sequence stars I found on it were a few neutron stars fairly close to directly south of Sol and some white dwarfs about 1,000 LY below the galactic plane which are totally unreachable. I searched long and hard for a black hole but not a sniff of one.

edit: I should add that in addition to your method of finding BHs, it is also a good idea to search for systems starting with <sector name> AA-A H. These tend to have less common main stars such as class O, BH, Wolf-Rayet and Herbig Ae/Be.

I'm already doing this, and i confirm that in many sectors the first entry is an uncommon star. Many are so up or down from the ecliptical that are unreacheable tough :(

I've been searching for interesting things that are interesting in part because (despite being uncharted) they are as close to Sol as possible - close enough to have signal sources and other activity in the systems (eg ~300LY). This may preclude them from being added to the current map, but perhaps being recorded here, they're effectively in the "database" for anyone to include in any future map :)

The first, I posted about here and a fellow explorer on the forums here suggested it be named Pandora's Bracelet. I have to agree - it's such a stunningly perfect string of gems.
"A small system consisting only of a string of nothing but worlds, their hues like jewels on velvet. Every one of them valuable. Fully half of the system is terraforming candidates. Life abounds in multiple places."
(HIP 42160)

The second is simply a large varied system with life and an Earthlike World that is of interest to me because it's very close to the human-occupied bubble (this one is 430LY from Sol, and the Earthlike world is fairly close to the jump point too).
The Earthlike world is as yet unnamed, but I call the system Fisher's Folly because I chased that thing like a white whale (searching high and low for a new Earth that was right next to Sol yet unknown to humanity).
Plenty of the low-hanging-fruit planets remain no-first-discoverer (untagged) at time of writing, so there are also easy discoveries to be made by anyone passing by.

Hey Erimus, I'm in Thor's Eye system (Map 01, POI #44), and i would like to add that the system itself itself is in the middle of an open cluster named NGC 6530 composed mainly by B stars and few A. There's an A white-blue supergiant (HD 164865) and many B that have neutron stars or black holes in the system.

The cluster is very visible in the skybox coming from sol toward the lagoon nebula, wich i think it's one of the most used routes.
I think it's worth a little addiction in the POI #44, a beautifull place to visit, altough everything is already tagged.

Here's the latest updates:

  • NGC 6705 (Wild Duck Cluster)
  • Pandora's Bracelet
  • Fisher's Folly
  • Thor's Eye (additional info thanks to Akira)
  • Hellsreach
  • Onigiri & Ringo
  • Calm & Storm
  • Penny & Farthing
  • The Perseus Null Sector
  • The Great Galactic Neutron Fields

Cheers! :)

Near the "Neutron nebula"

Black hole, neutron star, white dwarf. The interesting part is there is a water world orbiting the white dwarf.

As this is a highly unlikely occurrence, I propose the name "Terra Incredibile"

Just to drop in and say I'm still out here exploring even though my adventures have been few and far between of late. Had very little to report so far but I came across this just now, a Y Class Brown Dwarf (secondary star) with a ring system. This seems fairly odd. You get rings around gas giants and some ice planets but this is a first for me to see a sun with rings. Is this common? Have any of you see this?

Yes, Brown Dwarf with rings is a pretty common sight.

Hello again fellow explorers!

So having just completed my maiden 'explorer' voyage to the Pleiades Cluster (Map 01), in order to start earning some proper discovery credits, I've now returned to the edge of occupied space (an impressive Ocellus station in the "64 Arietis" system).

The end point for my adventure was the star 'Maia', picked purely at random as one of the more prominent looking stars in The Pleiades (although I did visit a few others). Although all the stars I visited had already been discovered, overall the whole thing was a good learning process for understanding the potential pitfalls of being along in deep space, without ever really being too far from civilisation.

Imagine my surprise though to discover upon arrival at Maia that it's a panoply of stars, planets, gas giants and even ... MY FIRST BLACK HOLE! :) I didn't think I'd have much chance of finding one in such a seemingly innocuous place, instead I thought I'd have to head further to the galactic centre where the younger and potentially more massive stars live. I would have taken a screenshot for reference but unfortunately was pressing F5 for that part of my journey before realising I should be pressing F10 (doh!). I'm sure most seasoned travellers will already have been there/seen that though, especially any KS backers.

So, with the 1.5M of credits I made on that trip I upgraded from my Adder to a Diamondback Scout (still got my eye on the Asp, but way too expensive for now) and kitted it out with better scanners, power units, shielding and other nik-naks to help me survive a much longer trip. After studying this thread I've decided to turn my attention to the mysterious 4th Quadrant and specifially, Map 05; hopefully there will be something (if not plenty) to put my name to around there! Anything interesting I find will of course be reported back here, along with screenshots this time. :)

Unfortunately, at the moment I only get chance to play Elite during lunch time at work, so my progress may very well be slow compared to others. Having said that, by the time I return from such an epic trip (or get bored/lonely/whatever comes first), hopefully the game will have been updated to give a bit more love to those of us who shun the visceral brutality of combat for the more scholarly enterprise of research and DISCOVERY!

We'll meet again...

Shijima.

As promised, just adding an entry for map 07 which I've been meaning to do for a while.

I'd like to propose that system IOWHOWNS DM-0 D12 be added to the catalogue, perhaps under a name like "Twin's Tears"

Don't have a screenie of the system map to hand at the moment, as I'm stuck in work, so I hope you'll accept a screen grab from the stream I was broadcasting when it was found:

waterworlds4.png

The reason for the name is because both of the stars in this system have two water worlds in orbit of them, and it just seemed to fit to me.

In each pair, one WW is a candidate for terraforming and the other isnt.

Here's the latest updates:

  • "Twin's Tears" (Map 8)
  • "Terra Incredible" (Map 10)
  • Sunny Side Down (Planetary Nebula) (Map 12)

Cheers! :)
