The Galactic Mapping Project & Historical Archive of Exploration

Hi gang!

Loving this thread and the first one I subscribed to and follow (although work and RL prevent me from being too active here unfortunately).

Due to massive procrastination on my part, I didn't really get in on the Kickstarter Betas and so started the game from a little after release. I'm devoting my lunch hour to exploration every working day so far, with the odd detour to grab bounty for an 'easy' kill, or run a naughty little recovery errand, etc.

I'm slowly (very slowly it seems) building up my credits on my journey towards the Ares Dark Region (picked kind of randomly because my original POIs, Cygnus-X1, seems a little far away for now ... along with the galaxy centre). I've upgraded my ship once so far to an Adder, mainly to have more external/internal options until I really want to start specialising. Ideally I think I'd like a Cobra (for ol' time's sake) or Asp, but they're a little way off just yet.

Anyway, sorry for the rambling but I just wanted to add my 2 credits worth and announce my intention to contribute to this endeavour eventually ... providing there is still stuff left to discover by the time I am up to speed! (No personal discoveries yet but I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that players have so far encountered <1% of the systems in the game). I'll need to go over your map/quadrant system again to understand it but can anyone please tell me if I am wasting my time here heading out to the Ares Dark Region? Am I going the wrong way to be of any real use?

Anyway... great thread, honourable commitment and obviously a great game; the Elite we always dreamed of! See you in space (hopefully not witch space though)... :)

Warm regards,
Elliott (Cmdr Shijima).

P.S. Do you think Frontier will attempt planetary landing support in a similar vein to what we're seeing for "No Man's Sky", but obviously with more class and style? ;)

I didn't see this in the legend yet so here:

MYLAIFAI Nebula
Game map search ref. : MYLAIFAI AA-A HD D11-1674
POI Type: Visual
A small-medium colourful nebula situated just above the Norma Expanse, approx. 19,100 LYs from Sol and 4,020 LYs SSE from The Great Annihilator.

Hi. I recently started my exploration adventure and have posted a small suggestion / idea here regarding exploration in general which I also think might help with the Galactic Mapping if it was to be implemented.

Because I have a gut feeling it will go unnoticed I am summing it up here:

An option in the galaxy map to toggle bubble of explored systems / fog of unexplored systems. The galaxy is so huge, so it is a waste of time and resources for explorers to keep visiting the same systems again and again. I have faith that Erimus as a pioneer and very well respected commander and forum member could raise this to Frontier or at least to a moderator so that they can forward it to the devs in Frontier.

An expansion of this idea would be a 3rd option in the Navigation panel of the galmap in addition to the most economical and fastest routes: the unexplrored / unvisited systems route: The Nav computer will get direct feed from the galaxy servers as to which systems have not yet been explored and/or visited and try to plot a route based on this information.

What do you think?

I can provide one nebula from my last finished journey.

It is PUELIAE AA-A H0 in Map 03

Proof that I was there

And another one from my current trip

It is EOCK PRAU AA-A H31 in Map 04? It´s really hard for me to identify where in the map it is. Maybe it would be helpful if some coordinates of the edges of the individual parts of the map can be listed somewhere :)

Excellent finds, Kola2. And extra rep for exploring that quadrant

I'll add those as soon as I can :)
Erimus, stupidly i mistyped the description for the "Eye of horror" nebulae.
Actually it is a pair made up of a black hole (primary star) and a class K star.
(it also has an unrelated main-sequence (F, or K can't remember) star orbiting some 500-700ls away)

Sorry for the inconvenience!

Here are this months additions :

  • NGC 2367 Open Cluster
  • Thor's Eye
  • Traikeou Nebula
  • Flimbuae "Eye of horror" Planetary Nebula
  • Eock Bluae Nebula
  • Douglas' World
  • Mylaifai Nebula
  • Puelia Nebula
  • Eock Prau nebula

Welcome Commander :)

I'm not sure how much of the Ares Dark Region has been discovered. I can't locate it on the game map search, but if you check out each of the 12 regional maps on this thread it'll give you an idea of which areas are currently the most traveled as they will have the most entries.

As for Frontier and planetary landing, I think we're secretly hoping it'll be more along the lines of Space Engine, as the way planet surfaces are modeled in that game are breathtaking. We're not sure if FD are going for that level of detail though, but you never know.

Hey neutronium,

I really like that idea and its definitely something I would have loved to have seen in Elite from the start. Unfortunately some of the fantastic exploration ideas Frontier talked about never made it into the game and its doubtful now that they ever will. It sad, but the game has gone off onto a completely different direction than what most of us were lead to believe during the kickstarter, and with them closing the design discussion forum down I'm not sure how open they are to new ideas now.

Among others, I too have been critical of FD lately, so I doubt they have any interest in anything I have to say (not that they did anyway :D), but you could post your idea in the Suggestion Forum, and maybe the devs will see it in there. Worth a shot?

No problem :)

Hello friends,

in a region that is 'remarkably unremarkable' I came across a small cluster of seven B0 VZ* stars with nearly identical age, which lead me to believe they might be an Open Cluster evolving from the same - now extinct - dust cloud. The Cluster is located circa two thirds of the distance from Eta Carina Nebula towards NGC 3199.
I named them the 'Seven Sapphires' and I'd like to porpose them for the Galaxy Mapping Project.

Details:

The Seven Sapphires Cluster
POI Type: Navigational/Exploration
Galaxy Coord: +12,430 ; -5 ; +3430
Galaxy Map Ref: SMOJO LM-W F1-0

Please see attached screenshot for revision:

*VZ classification means that the star is a ZAMS, a Zero Age Main Sequence star. So, astronomically speaking it has 'just' entered the main sequence of stars.

As always, fly safe!

So, try again...

IS there a map of list of "Pending" tagged bodies at Beagle Point? I'm not far - about 150Ly, assuming I can make it with 31.5Ly jump range that is... It's been giving no end of trouble so far...

Z...

Erimus (in his Kamzel guise) tagged the star and three of the planets. None of the others are currently tagged. I've scanned just the outermost planet, no idea what anyone else might have scanned.

OK, Stulli scanned the 3rd planet, he said. I'm still trying to work out how to get there, and it this rate, it'll take me a few nights...

I actually scanned them all at Beagle Point but only about 60% of the stuff I scanned out there ever got registered. There are whole systems I scanned that I can still view on the system panel but bear no name. I don't think the first discovery thingy was working properly back in January as I ticketed it once the first discovery feature was added in a later patch, but those tickets went ignored.

Its no big deal, just tag whatever you like out there - its all fair game :)

I have several possible POIs that might be worth including but they are all within 9k LY of Sol, so I'll leave it to the OP to decide whether or not they merit being added to this crowded area of the map. These are my three most-interesting systems that contain what I believe are rare combinations of objects: two are systems containing both an Earth-like World and an Ammonia World and one contains a binary pair of Ammonia Worlds.

Flyooe Eohn DK-I c12-0 : A Rice Ball in a Fruits Basket
This system is about half way between human space and the Crab Nebula and immediately catches the eye with its three watery innermost planets. Of these, the second planet is Earth-like and both the others are terraformable water worlds. There is life of another kind further out, though, as the sixth planet is an Ammonia World. As the Ammonia World seems like the odd one out, I would call it Onigiri (onigiri means 'rice ball' in Japanese and the expression 'a rice ball in a fruits basket' means 'odd one out'). Keeping with this theme, I would be inclined to call the Earth-like World either Ringo (Japanese for apple) or Momo (Japanese for peach) but my preference would be for Ringo.

Bleia Eork CN-H d11-18 : The Calm and the Storm
There are two outdoor worlds in this system: the Earth-like 9th planet and the Ammonia World 11th planet. The Ammonia World is unusual in that it has no atmosphere at all and also sports a ring system and has a moon of its own. The Earth-like world had a huge storm system at the time of discovery, so future colonists will need to be careful what crops they grow here (indigenous species will probably be best!). Given the differing surface conditions on these planets I would be inclined to name the Ammonia World 'Calm' and the Earth-like World 'Storm'.

Blae Eork VB-W c18-1 : Ammonia Twins
The third and fourth planets are a binary pair of Ammonia Worlds. Like identical twins, they may look very similar but there are differences: the atmospheric composition is the main difference, with planet 3 being high in nitrogen but low in carbon dioxide whilst planet 4 has a very high proportion of carbon dioxide in its atmosphere but is low in nitrogen. The presence of this greenhouse gas is likely responsible for most of the 36K difference in surface temperature even though surface pressure is fairly similar. Since this pair represent two sides of the same coin, I am inclined to name them after Earth coins: planet 3 being 'Penny' and planet 4 being 'Farthing' (both coins being copper-coloured to better represent an Ammonia World pair).

Hey Kola2,

Not wanting to hijack this thread, but as someone who's been reading it recently and came across your name here, imagine my surprise when watching this video yesterday:

(Continues in Part 3...)

Apologies if you had already seen it. Did you get Cmdr Fanatics in the end? ;)
