The Galactic Mapping Project & Historical Archive of Exploration

Hello folks!

The Mapping Project is back again after a few months overhaul.

We have transitioned it away from the low-res 2D screenshots, and all the data that has been submitted to it over the past 18 months has now been incorporated into AnthorNet's EDSM.

  • The galaxy has been divided up into 58 regions. Regional borders are still a work in progress and will be fine tuned as more POI data makes its way into the EDSM database over the coming weeks/months/years.
  • Each region name is a link to the map, as is each POI name. Simply click on a region or POI, and the map pops up for you to browse. Or simply click on the EDSM screenshot on post #1 and that takes you to the map too.

From February 2015 until May 2016, the mapping project had been a one-man job. But now there is a team of dedicated Cartographers working on it, and we hope it'll continue to grow and be a useful source of info for all explorers, new and old.

I want to say thanks to AnthorNet for the brilliant job he has done with the EDSM programming, and thanks too to Corbin Moran and Finwen for providing the excellent new high-res maps that have been incorporated into EDSM.

Important! Submitting Points of Interest:

Please use the following convention when submitting an entry (and in this order)..
Name :(name of your entry after checking the naming stipulations above)
Game map search ref. :(provide the exact procedural name of the POI you discovered)
Description :(write a short description of what you found)
Screenshot Ref. Post :(provide the post # or link of where your screenshot or video of your POI can be found)

As always, please read the stipulations on post #1 before submitting a POI.. And remember, not all POIs make it on to the maps - we don't want to over-saturate them with too many minor POIs.

Wow, this overhaul of the galactic-mapping project is incredibly awesome, Erimus!
Many many thanks for all the work!!

Wow, looks like galactic mapping is back with a vengeance. Excellent job!
Now, I have something that I can't believe I forgot about:

Name :G2 Dust Cloud
Game map search ref. :G2 Dust Cloud
Description :The origins of the G2 dust cloud are uncertain, but it has survived an encounter with Sagittarius A* in the distant past. Now, it's a faint dark red nebula that has since travelled 2000 ly away from the core. This makes it the farthest non-procedural nebula from Sol, and possibly the closest large (and non-procedural) nebula to Sagittarius A* as well. t As it's quite small and faint, finding it without using a map would be next to impossible: even from 80 ly away, it's hard to make out by eye. However, due to the extreme star density in the area, some very interesting views can be seen nearby, as the dust cloud gives the areas it obscures a blood red tint.

Thanks for the naming of "Wagar's Reach". Very much appreciated.

At your service, CMDRs. Keep up the good work, EDSM is a masterpiece.

Cheers,

Drew.

This is looking impressive, not least because the new high-res images also show where some nebulae that have not been recorded are to be found - hopefully this will inspire people to go exploring in some of the less-charted areas!
.
A minor note: the Bouquet Nebula (one of the eight major nebulae of the Festival Grounds) is missing, instead the Thunderclap is marked as one of the eight when it is really a minor nebula centred on a neutron star. (The Bouquet Nebula is detailed in the same post as the others but I could probably have spaced the paragraphs better, sry about that). (EDIT: the descriptions for the Wizard's Hat and the Little Xoth nebulae seem to have been merged and the Demon Eater nebula is not where I remember - I passed the Festival Grounds returning to the bubble before I encountered it iirc. I hope I haven't got any sector names confused because my original screenshots have since been lost after my OS got corrupted and my hard drive needed to be wiped for the reinstall, so if in doubt go with whatever is in the imgur albums :( . At least the Little Xoth should be clear because it's named for its sector, Xothuia :) )
.
I'm glad you have some assistance to manage this - it's a monster task keeping track of all the POIs and there are plenty more to be added! I just hope it doesn't get too dangerous, or I won't be spending 15-20 mins. fiddling around in supercruise trying to get the right angle for a screenshot of a nebula or ELW/AW. I like to enjoy the view!

Thanks for the update. I've amended the Thunderclap Nebula so that its marked as a planetary nebula. Do you have the procedural reference for the Bouquet Nebula so I can add it.

It's looking good, a toast to all involved and thank you for your efforts.

Plus the map on EDSM shows where it last saw you as well - I am currently outside of the marked regions. My route is drawing a line through the Abyssal Plain label on Corbin and Finwen's map. It's also quite plain, I'll keep an eye out for anything vaguely like a POI while I'm out here though...

To all CMDRs involved: we can't rep you enough! That looks like some huge amount of work, and it's very much appreciated.
(me leaving with my head bowed in deep admiration).

Thanks Drew, I'm very glad you like it :) It really goes straight to my heart.

@Erimus I just notice you named a region after me :) Sweet, now I have to visit it!

For your dedication at keeping the Elite lore and story telling alive for the past decade, its the least the community could do :)

For the sheer amount of work you've done on EDSM, likewise above, its the least we could do :)

Hopefully one day FD will officially recognize some of the community named galactic features and incorporate them into the game. Would add some badly need 'character' to the galaxy as a whole

Yep, I'm really impressed with the collaboration on getting the mapping project on to EDSM, and have been having a look around for places I really would like to visit when I finally get around to my round the galaxy trip (though this isn't going to be for a while... at least until after the "rise to power" thing). This and the new bookmarks are really going to make my trip much more enjoyable.

Having noticed the huge number of pulsars that are on the map... there does seem to be one glaring omission that I'm going to submit details of here:

Name :LGM-1
Game map search ref. :LGM-1
Description :Officially designated PSR B1919+21, this was the first Pulsar discovered by earth based astronomers (1967). Because regularly repeating radio
sources were not known in space at the time, it was briefly named LGM-1 (standing for "Little Green Men") as it was joked the signal might have been from an alien intelligence. This is also the name given to it by Universal Cartographics.

Note: This isn't me naming anything, and I wasn't the first to discover in game when I visited last year (though it appears I was the first to upload a netlog to EDSM). The system looks rather uninteresting, but I feel it of historical significance. It is in Cygnus (near the Traikeou nebula) 9128.00LY from Sol. Whist I hadn't got the the hang of trilateration at the time, I have since added distances during my travels, and the co-ordinates now appear to be known on EDSM.
