If FD are using this as a reason as to why you can't set up more than 2 buttons, then I'm now convinced David Braben has been in stasis for the last 30 years and was flabbergasted when he saw his first USB stick!!

lol seriously.

The balance comment about mice and joysticks was a joke, right?

Just to add a few thoughts here....

Wanted to mention a quick thanks, your post was one of a few that convinced me to get a CH Pro and T16000M,
though I bought a Logitech G13 aswell to make some other functions easier. Actually I bought two of each, 2nd setup
in front of the big TV, other at my desk which I've completely reorganised for ED. :D I only bought one headset though,
Corsair H2100. Currently getting to grips (sic) with control assignments, etc. For some reason I'm having issues making
the throttle direction act correctly...

I've read this whole thread, such a wide range of choices people have made on how to assign controls, so many
possibilities. Even though I don't have it anywhere near set fully yet, just landing on a pad yesterday was so much
easier than my first attempt with kybd/mouse (at which point I decided to stop playing, wait until I had all the peripherals
so I wasn't wasting time learning a control method which would only be used for a few days).

Ian.

PS. Somewhat surprised when first connecting up the G13 to see current news headlines scrolling up the LCD. :D
Wasn't expecting that... turned the function off though, don't want the real world impinging on my space adventures. :}
I like the 4th Wall to be sturdily constructed at all times.

Saitek X52 throttle and Joystick on a Mac

I'm looking forward to playing Elite Dangerous on my Mac next month, but I'm worried that my Saitek 52X pro won't work with it.

Seeing how Saitek doesn't have a control settings software for the Mac, I'm worried that my joystick and throttle controls won't work when ED comes out for the Mac. Is there a developer here that can tell me that the 52x will work on a Mac? Or, how I can get around the lack of support Saitek has for Mac?

Games like War Thunder work with the X52 on a Mac because it has in game support for the device. I suspect that Frontier will do the same for Elite, but Elite requires so much more controls than War Thunder. Particularly, I need to be able to set my dead zones with the controller, because after some use it's off a bit. Without setting dead zones, elite is unplayable or causes many errors when 'looking' and using the galaxy map (X52 has a mouse controller on the throttle and that's where I have the dead zone issue).

If you have the software for the stick you should be able to increase the dead zone. You may need to use the software to calibrate the stick also.

So... just bought the game, and I tried to read as many of the latest posts as possible, so I apologize if this was asked/answered in the million previous posts.

Thinking about buying the T16000M as it seems to be one of the top rated sticks. I kind of want the T.Flight HOTAS as well (wife will be playing eventually, she's used to 'hand me downs' heh).

So I guess my question falls into "will a T.Flight be excellent to learn how to use the thing, and then I can move into a T16000 + (recommend throttle here) later when I've figured out what the heck I'm doing?"

I realize that these sorts of things fall into pure opinion. I've never used a HOTAS (was never a flight simmer and stuck to m/kb or played these kinds of games looooong before you could buy a sim setup for less than the mortgage on your home). I'm not worried about learning to use it (will be a rage-y experience, I'm sure).

For $50 (at Fry's, anyway, Amazon somehow thinks they're worth $129), I can get the T.Flight, and for another $50 I can get the T16000M. Not opposed to buying both and buying a good throttle later for the T16000.

Thanks for any suggestions. Yes, I did look at the X52 and others, and they do look/seem nice, but keep in mind I need to hand one of these down to the wife, so buying a couple of X52's or such isn't really within the budget.

Two possibilities:
1) you bind it for full throttle control, so middle is throttle zero
2) you bind it for forward only and use a button to switch it to reverse (and back)

Cool, if bound to full it is difficult to set zero speed or do some have a notch in the middle?

I play with razor mouse and keyboard, I have always played flight sim games like this so it is nothing new to me. I have been in about 70-80 PvP matches since I started playing this game and I have only been blown up or self destructed two times. I played SWG JTL for many years with mouse and keyboard and most of my clan used the same because a mouse is more accurate than a joystick when it comes to aiming. Joystick is better for moving around in a standard flight sim, but not in this game since you also have to factor in thrusters which can are more easily controlled using a razor mouse and macros so you don't have to push buttons.

If you're into flight simulation then joystick is better because it is more immersive. If you're into being the best pilot then mouse and keyboard are the best instruments.

Not sure which option to vote for, I guess 'Other' is closest

I'm using my trusty and somewhat ancient Microsoft Sidewinder Precision 2 flight stick.
I was using a Thrustmaster T-Flight HotasX but didn't like it's stick, so was using the MS Sidewinder and the throttle only from the T-Flight but that to me seemed like a waste of perfectly good analogue axis and buttons,, soo I created FrankenThrottle

frankenthrottle.jpg

A standalone T-Flight hotasx throttle (no T-Flight stick any-more) currently 12 button, 2 analogue mini sticks and obviously the main throttle function (still have wires for 4 additional buttons or a hat switch just haven't been bothered enough to set them up)

I use a dual joystick setup. I'm a left handed so I was forced to this choice as there's not much to do with HOTAS. (the usual discrimination)

Left hand: Thrustmaster T16000 V.1 used for pitch, yaw (it has Z axis rotation on the stick), roll, change weapons group, next target, next hostile target, energy distribution (POV button)

It's a nice mid quality joystick. It's just a little "heavy" to handle but it works fine and does it's job. It has 6 buttons on both left and right sides on the base but I don't use them as my left hand has to be always on the stick. 3 buttons + POV on the top of the stick and the trigger for primary fire in front of it. This joystick can be modified to work with both left and right hand. You just have to remove and apply a couple of pieces.

Right hand: Logitech Attack 3 used for vertical and horizontal thruster control, trottle up and down, set full speed, afterburner and secondary fire.

It's an ambidextrous joystick. Comes out with two buttons per side on the base plus two buttons on the front. 4 buttons on the stick plus front trigger. Handling is very light and comfortable but it lacks of yaw Z axis, so I decided to use it to control thrusting with my right hand.

Both my joystick have trottle wheel but I dont use them as I control my speed with top buttons on my right joystick.

I tend to use dual control in dogfights while using Joy+keyboard for docking and Supercruise.

With a minimum expense of about 100€ I could resolve my problem of being left handed and I can fully enjoy the simulator.

On a side note, I dont like the fact that Elite's cockpit represent only right handed HOTAS system setup. I'd like to have the option to switch it to left handed for a better feeling while using IR head tracking.

A picture of my setup:

Some sticks do have a notch in the middle of throttle, but I've heard that even if it is there, it is easy to miss. You could try playing with the deadzone settings, but be warned that it may feel a bit awkward re fine control of low throttle.

Yeah it will awkward, gonna go with the reverse button.

Same as in real life. They don't make fighters with left handed stick/throttle arrangements neither. Left handed pilots learn to fly with a right handed stick same as everyone else...

How is reverse handled with a hotas?

Can you instantly go from forward to reverse?

The out of the box ED config for the X55 has the full range of the throttle for 0-100% power, and a button on the back of the throttle lever works to engage reverse mode. You also have the forwards/reverse manoeuvring thrusters, which you can bind somewhere nearby (several good places you could put them on an X55 throttle, actually).
