How do I edit the poll (if I can)? Don't see it in the FAQ.

Sorry I don't know. Oh well, maybe next time eh?

Anyway I use a logitech F310 hand controller for most things, the keyboard for less used things (landing gear, initiate jump etc) and the mouse inside the station menus.

I'd use a word to describe them for taking away such an amazingly good technology from us but I'd get an infraction for it.

It's things like this that make me wish I had hacking skills. I'd unleash a DDOS storm on them that they'd never recover from.

Seriously though, I think it's time the patent rules were changed so that you could only hold a patent for a technology if you were actively using it yourself. Otherwise it should expire after a short period of time. Say 6 months.

Just ordered that tonight as well. My other HOTAS didn't have enough buttons. :D

Did you know you can allocate one HOTAS button as being an implicit 'shift' (by which I mean leave it unallocated) to make every other joystick button dual function?

Go into controls, select the function you want to map. Press and HOLD your 'shift' button, then press the action button you want associated with the function. You will see the dual button mapping recorded.

Blooming marvelous!!!!

It would be fantastic if the legal stuff went away

Legal stuff? I've not heard of any legal issues pertaining to implementation of force feedback in games or joysticks and while rare, new products do emerge from time to time - admittedly, the current newest force feedback joysticks are either crap or absurdly expensive.

Plenty of games are released with FF support, just that they're usually somewhat nichey - flight sims, racing games and the like. In fact if a flight sim was released without force feedback there would be an outcry - it's all in directx anyway afaik, so should be relatively easy to program on the dev side.

If you like flight sims then there's no reason not to get an MS FFB 2 used from ebay imho - they make for very good normal joysticks as well (and I've not seen any issues with Windows 8.1, both of mine worked fine - one's a silver trigger version and one's the red).

If there have been any lawsuits, they may have been directed at the MS FFB2 back in the day, but since then Logitech at least have released the G940 (by all accounts they're not that good), you still have plenty of avenues for DIY force feedback set up, and then there's weird ones like http://www.paccus.com/ - hydraulic, prototype stage and bloody expensive, as well as plenty of FFB 2's available on ebay.

e: this Immersion/rumblepack malarkey is news to me

I have the F710 and could never get used to the sticks. Its basically a paperweight, less than 3 hours used. Works great but I prefer a real Stick.

In my opinion, two joysticks are much better for Elite than a HOTAS, as I find the increased accuracy for lateral thrusters outperforms the HOTAS's accuracy on throttle. The Thrustmaster T16000M perfectly suits that, as it is both cheap and precise, plus it can be built to either be used in the right or left hand. It is also possible to use a HOTAS + a second stick, and switch your hand between them as need be. I used to combine the X52 and one T16000M that way, before I abandoned the throttle for its lack of use, especially in FAoff-mode. I simply mapped forward-thrust / backward-thrust to the left-hand stick, and it feels much better to control.
I don't understand, why do you think two joysticks are better?

Fair enough.

I guess I got used to it from years of playing games on an XB360 (don't hate me!). ;)

K+M proved to be pretty intuitive for me from the very beginning. I don't have a HOTAS because I'm not a flight simulator nut and can't afford such a system either to be honest.

I do play with FAon though - maybe I'll give it another go sometime.

X-55.
I have very small hands, but I got used to it.
pros: yaw on stick, lots of buttons on the throttle too.
Just amazing.

I did'nt believe I could enjoy it so much. It took more than a week actually to get used to it coming from mouse+keyboard, but It definitely deserved my efforts. I fly much better and lateral/vertical thrusting in combat adds a lot. Not possible that easy with mouse+keyboard.

Thanks for your photos, actually X55 is easy to get one in HK because it is new, but lack of choice due to low demand.
The retail price is a little bit higher than US (HKD$1899, around USD$244.8)
I might get one and buy the mod on eBay if I cannot find a better option.

The screen on the x52 pro is not worthless, hoping someone writes a connection to the MFD for ED (there are some for other games). FD might have even stated to do it.

Anyway, I love the x52 pro, and because it has been around for a long time many games support it. Also many companies expect the players to have it so its one of the first ones supported, even FD modeled their ingame flightsticks after it.

Go with CH products, they are of good long lasting quality, As opposed to an X52 pro, it only last me 2 months before completely wearing out - BRAND NEW

Use a keyboard and mouse with VA and save yourself some cash. If you must have something in your hand, that's what the joystick you were born with is for.

Completely wearing out...how? But you should have your product warrant right?
I am thinking about geting X55 or CH throttle and buy a joystick, if the quality of X55 is acceptable now(also the warrant as well), I will buy one.
I prefer a twist-yaw joystick so I might not get the CH.

I am new to ED...don't know much about VA, is it a official add-on or something? My first language is Cantonese, it's cool to control your ship with voice command but I am afraid it might not recognize my accent....

Apart from the price. They regularly go for well over £100 which is a lot to pay for something that has been used for at least 10 years.
I'd love to have another FF2 but while my wife is very understanding I'd have trouble explaining to her why I was willing to pay that much for something that is probably almost worn out.

Not at all. Last console I owned was a PS2. I have had a lot more experience with a stick that gamepad. I initially tried the Keyboard and mouse, but could never get comfortable with it. Then I decided to stop being lazy and setup my stick. Loved it immediately.

I think its what you are comfortable with. I am sure if I put more time into it, the gamepad or mouse & keyboard would be viable for me. My perception is that anything that involves flight, be it space or atmosphere based is more realistic with a stick. Biased perception no doubt.

The MSFFB2 is one of the highest quality consumer joysticks ever made. If I had any complaint it would be the rubberized grip that disintegrates over time. But it can be disassembled and removed with a little work. It's also pretty easy to find one that is in new condition and still has the box, the key is patience. Joysticks are a bit weird.. they are purchased and get used until they die, or they get put on a shelf.

EDIT: The red trigger version has the rubberized grip. AFAIK.

I'm playing with a MS Sidewinder 2 and whilst there is no Force Feedback, the motors provide the centering and it feels great.
A bit of buffeting whilst taking hull damage (or crashing into the dokcing pad :) ) would be great if it were implemented in future.

mmm, I got my red trigger version for £50-55 a few months before christmas, so it pays to be on the lookout, maybe save a search on ebay and keep looking for a few weeks. Generally the ones I've seen on ebay aren't that worn out - you get a huge amount of these stuck in cupboards and attics for years, they usually just need a dust wipe and have been used very few times in their life - and a good way to spot a worn out stick will be to look at how shiny the buttons are (particularly the ones on the base - if the pics are good enough, ofc) - the shinier the buttons the older the stick.

I got my first FFB2 for free when I turned up to someone's garage to pick up another free item and I just spotted it in the corner, commented and he gave it to me there and then :)

I guess I'm "lucky" in a way that a "normal" family life is out of the question for me and my girlfriend, so we get to spoil ourselves a little...

Not all of them are rubberised, though - I know neither of mine were. They make for good bases for modding projects too - the gimbal/mechanics are easily removed (once you're past the weird slip-screws) and the electronics can be modded to take bigger motors, and being straight USB is a doddle to wire up into another box.

I've always flown Space sims with KB+M, and still use it when I fly in Planetside 2. I started ELite with KB+M, then switched to KB+Logitech Extreme Pro, then finally bought an x55 Rhino. There was a learning curve, but I find a HOTAS more satisfying to use, at least...when flying. Flying with a mouse is still technically more "precise" when aiming, but using a throttle is a better way to adjust your speed compared to a KB. You have to either click W or S, X amount of times, or hold them down, until you are at your desired throttle. With a Throttle(hotas) you just move the stick where you want, and your ship goes to that speed.
