Yeah i actually build one for freetrack, it works fine but i'm not sure if it's highly required. If you can see enemy ships in radar easily, you don't need it so much. What do you think?
No, headlook controls (that’s what you’ve been asking about) are not required, nor is any head-tracking equipment. The scanner, once you get the hang of it, is perfectly sufficient for situational awareness. You might want to increase the field-of-view setting from the default, though, or else parts of the HUD will often get off-screen during dogfight.

Thats great news. Then i don't need more than one stick and that leaves me with my Logitech joystick for now. If i dont get bored with the game i can buy a new joystick. Thanks.

Y’know, if you really want to, you can connect both joysticks to your machine and use them together. That’s what I do, in fact — right hand for attitude control (pitch/yaw/roll), left hand for direct thruster control (and, well, extra buttons :)). Of course the left-hand joystick has to have either a left-hand or a symmetric grip for that to work.

Well you could use both. Your off hand on the controller would have access to one analog stick, d-pad and the two top shoulder buttons. Analog stick could be headlook and the d-pad could be mapped to lateral and horizontal thrust.

Joystick animations for mouse users?

I've noticed in some YT videos that the pilot will actually use the joystick (s)he's holding in his/her right hand.

However, I've never seen this effect myself in my own game. I suspect this is because I'm using a keyboard + mouse? Shouldn't mouse movements be translated into the in-game joystick as well?

This is a minor thing, but consistency is consistency...

Imprecise keyboard/mouse controls, switch to joystick?

So, I got elite dangerous two days ago. I preceded to install it, and attempt the training missions. I could barely fly, so I messed with settings. I just could not hit anything, every after 3 hours sitting there trying. I then proceeded to rage. Intesnse, desk banging, purple faced rage. I tried to find a way to get a refund. Next day, I found a forum post with a control scheme that's pretty good. I'm pretty glad I didn't find a way to get a refund. I still can't aim with keyboard/mouse in combat though. I just hate relative mode, it's terrible for general piloting. But absolute is almost as bad for combat. I simply overshot every time. It feels so wrong to have my mouse keep moving, and oftentimes I can't find the center whilst trying to aim to make it stop. So, will a joystick solve my problem? I'd think it would simply because of the fact that when you decrease pressure on the axis, is moves back to center, allowing for fine adjustments ( I hope ). If a joystick would help with this, which one would you recommend? I'm looking at either the Thrustmaster T-Flight HOTAS X or the Saitek X52 (no pro for me, unless it's really that much better). Is the X52 worth the extra money? I want to be really sure, because I've heard some horror stories about the X52 having problems (plus, I'm obsessed with finding the best setup in my price range). :D
Thanks for any assistance you can provide Commanders!

Sure it will help. I'd go with Saitek products only if you have a robust aftersales support in your city (or country), they are not exactly the paragon of build quality. AFAIK the Pro is much better. Thrustmaster products are good. I personally use the cheap and cheerful Logitech Extreme 3D Pro.

I rarely use joystick nowadays though, I fought about 80% as well as I am with joystick with just KB+M, and that's plenty for 99% of the stuff I do in this game.

a lil change to the keybinds can helps with the keyboard and mouse as well , pitch and turn on the mouse up/down and left right thrusters on wsad , and roll on q and e forget what if anything else i changed but those changed made kb mouse flying much better then just a mater of fine tuning dead zones and such

Yea, I changed the key binds to be almost exactly like those. That parts fine, but I always overshoot the target I'm aiming at while fighting. I just can't keep the cursor on them. It's either too far over, behind or to a side, and I can't seem to track and aim accurately at the same time. Absolute mode tries to make my mouse into a joystick, but at the end of the day, it's still a mouse, and doesn't autocenter for me.

God please let me find you lot in Open :D

For roll-centric model like ED, a joystick is certainly much more intuitive - it just comes with a price tag attached.

Personally, I bought a Thrustmaster Warthog throttle and stick, and never looked back. In space I rarely touch the keyboard, can relax with almost all commands at my fingertips (literally).

The Warthog is great, but it was pricey. But I'm splitting that between ED, SC and whatever else comes along in the future. It is well built and easy to configure for ED.

I dumped the mouse and just use the keyboard. It works really well. I have tried hotas, it's good for aiming, but dont like the speed control very much.

Hi,

I also started out with keyboard and mouse, personally I think its fine for trading and most things, but combat can be a bit tricky and you have to get used to it. I soon switched to an X-55 though, which I think is a really good HOTAS, the throttle is just so much better than a simple key input. Aiming with a joystick also takes practice, you have to develop some motor skills to be able to keep on target. For me, at first it worked worse than with a mouse, cause I'm used to shooting stuff with a mouse. But nowadays, I'll never go back. It's just so relaxing to fly with a HOTAS :)

The frustration and "I'm never going to get the hang of it" is totally normal at the beginning. Use whatever control method suits you. I'm on 100% keyboard and have been from the start (about a year ago).

This is not a "shoot-em up" game. It's a long haul and learn as you go. And for me it's awesome.

go on ebay and search for"gamespower hotas"....cost me 35 quid, cheapbut for me performs exceptional......stick is better than k&b and a gamepad.
even has vibration feedback(it vibrates lol) but ihave to have control panel calibration running in the background for it to stay in game.

if you look down at the controls the pilot in game uses a stick and throttle........

now this is just my humble opinion but to play this game one must have...
HOTAS
headtracking
voice attack..

just for basic starters lol

Mouse and keyboard works pretty well with some training and fine tuning. It's a start. Not as immersive as a HOTAS setup though.

HOTAS is not needed at all, its handy but not needed.

If you wish to limit money on joystick do yourself a favor and get a T16000M CH flightstick. If you do not wish to get that one make sure you get something with hall sensors for its control inputs anything else is just trash and will die fast. Most though these days have hall sensors they have seen the light unless you buy rediculously cheap non branded stuff or older saitek stuff. Keep that in mind the old x series saiteks dont use hall sensors only the latest ones do for the most part.

I use WASD R&F for controls on left hand and rest is joystick on right. Other controls easily mapped to joystick and keyboard for flight assist on/off toggle on other tasks.

yeah i started on a single stick....cyborg x thing ..20 quid from pc world.....
i have even converted some old xbox racing pedals in to a single usb connected "yaw" pedals.

black dog? led zeppelin fan by any chance?

My everyday controller is a Rock Candy XBox 360 game controller and I also have a Saitek F.L.Y.5 which I never really got along with.

I just bought a 3DConnexion SpaceNavigator to be the attitude controller and a Logitech G13 gamepad to give me all the buttons I need.
