Hi guys,

I am still using my (very old) Logitech Extreme 3D Pro (which has a little throttle lever at the base of it) and keyboard. And I am holding on to buying any other of the more advanced controllers until I have a better idea of the most popular set ups.

In particular I see "strafe" button easy access as key for finetuning Assist Off mode and at the moment I have mapped strafe thrusters to my hat switch, but I would like to see where other players have decided to map their strafe (up/down, right/left) keys to.

So, where do you have your strafe buttons?

I bought the extended Beta last night. Having dug out my Extreme 3D Pro from the back of a cupboard I came to the forum to ask the same question Viajero. It's going to be fun over the next few weeks using the combat scenarios to fine-tune the setup. I guess at the point that I'm happy I'll end up changing stuff as I realise I need some buttons to assist with docking etc :)

I use the hat for vertical/lateral thrusters.

And me, I will be using my old logitech extreme 3d pro. :) It is the only piece of computer equipment that I am not going to have to upgrade when I get the game. :(

Oh I missed that thread! Thanks for the link!

So far I also have thursters in the hat but I find it a bit awkward to use my thumb for strafing while trying to (poorly) control Assist Off flight. It´s like I feel I need all my 5 fingers to control the stick to keep the darned ship stable already.

I have my roll mapped to the stick rotation and the Yaw to the x axis though. I dont know, for me ship roll goes more intuitively with stick twist...

I also have my thruster set to full range including reverse (i.e. no toggle) It saves me to have to click one more button when I go reverse (which I do on occasions after a Assist Off 180 turn) and I have just get used to the narrower run for forward speed.

You *could* assign button 12 and button 13 to the scroll wheel to control throttle in ED, and here where is you can't grasp facts, we are not talking about what you can assign what to in the game. The OP asked where was button 12 on the joystick. You said it was the scroll wheel. You are wrong. I have shown you are wrong. You are the one who refuses to admit it.

Whether I have a F.L.Y. 5 or not is irrelevant (but I do have one) the fact is still that button 12 is the shift button, which is what the op asked about.

EDIT: I am not "hell bent on saying you are wrong" you are the one refusing to accept that button 12 is not the scroll wheel. Any mature, normal person would have replied "Oh ok, maybe it is then", but you have insisted on trolling a response out of me.

Oh ok, maybe it is then.

Which HOTAS system works best with Oculus Rift?

Which HOTAS system works best with Oculus Rift?

If you're using Oculus Rift, it strikes me that you won't be able to see the keyboard, so every command will have to be present on the flight stick, throttle control, and perhaps foot pedals.

imho the X-55 should be the best pick, cause it seems to have the most buttons and switches.
I think the silver switches at the throttle could be used blindfolded too.

Interesting question!

I've got a fairly basic Hotas with ten buttons and even then I have to look at them to make sure that I'm selecting a subsystem rather than boosting etc. Pictures that I've seen of the earlier X-52 suggest a plethora of ways to have accidents.

For those who have had a go with Oculus Rift, are you "totally blind" to the rest of the world - or is it a case of frequently pulling the unit up so that you can look down at the keys/stick and then back to the action?

Thank you for your suggestion.

In addition, I'm thinking of using voice recognition for commands that don't require 'lightning reflexes'. This should reduce groping, but I hope the voice recognition is good enough and my voice don't go hoarse.

I think voice rec. will be a nice approach to many kinds of actions. In the past i used GlovePie for such things and were pleased with the results. But for me it was only an option when i was alone. :)

I tried the X55, the Thrustmaster Warthog and the X52.
The X55 didn't work for me using Win 8.1 64bit, although sleek design.
But hey, I should be able to use the throttle, otherwise it's meaningless.
Driver issue MadCatz couldn't solve, so I sent it back.
It's nowhere mentioned, but older games don'ts support dual usb ports.
Therefore in old games you can either use the throttle or the stick.
You might deal with VJoy and UJR, but again this didn't work for me.

The X52 was the one the devs originally used during development,
has all required functionalities, is not that big to cover your whole desk
and won't cost you a fortune. Had to deal with a device mgr. issue,
but made it work.

Thrustmaster Warthog is heavy, you need some power to press buttons on it.
Realizing how often I have to do this in ED, considering the price tag and
much to bright background light IMHO even at lowest setting turned me off.

So for now I go with the X52, which I really like and may move to X52 Pro later.

X55 has a total of 45 buttons +POV, which is more than enough for ED right now. So currently I am not using voiceattack as it is faster to use buttons on HOTAS.

There is absolutely no need to look down at HOTAS' buttons at all. Although I do not have OR, but I have never looked at HOTAS during flying and combat.
