Thanks for your config Kanevilorde.
It's plugged in and working as soon as the pc boots up. Checked drivers were up to date, rebooted, made sure it was working in other games, launched Elite, went to controls, and again...no Gamepad option.
It's an Afterglow 360 controller, but works just the same as an official one and uses the same drivers.

My apologies, you will want Advanced Control Pad. If this still is not working for you, please try another USB port. I too have an Afterglow 360 controller, and use it on my Windows 8.1 system. If the controller is not recognized there will be no option for Advanced Control Pad or Control Pad. If this is the case, despite it working with other games, this indicates an issue with drivers.

This is really helpful, thanks. Using a Saitek Cyborg Evo but it's a bit knackered now. The worst problem is that the throttle at the back permanently slowly slides into reverse (no deadzone setting can fix it). Only 0% and 100% settings remain stable.

Considering the Thrustmaster HOTAS given the low cost. Their sticks used to be number 1 back in the day, with a price to match!

Sometimes my changes in the control scheme wouldn't be recognized until I logged out of Elite and closed it. Then when I re-opened Elite, the control mapping worked.

I use the Thrustmaster T-Flight Hotas X - I've had it a couple of years and it's still working fine.

It's reasonably cheap yet feels great in the hand.

It also has two inputs for yaw - and for ED (imho) yaw is essential, particularly for avoiding interdiction.

It also works with a PS3...

No problem :)
I've tried a few different USB ports now, with no control pad options. Do you know what drivers you're running? (I'm also windows 8.1)

Any joystick is better than no joystick... Unless you're a hardcore mouser.. ;)
I recommend the X52 Pro... Or the Rhino... both very excellent and precise.

I agree. Go with a full HOTAS setup. It is like night and day.

I went with a Saitek X55 this past week after having played the game with my old MSSidewinder II (which worked quite well I might add!). The X55 is darn pricy, but the sheer number of buttons are awesome. I was a bit worried about the purchase, but once in hand.. I'm extremely happy with it. This is coming from a long time hardcore flight simmer. I'd have used my old Thrustmaster setup, but I wore the heck out of it over a number of years. It was time to go new. I almost went with the X52, but figured I'd splurge the extra bit. My suggestion, if you can try the stick in action first, that would be best. But often that isn't a convenient option.

This game, in my opinion, doesn't do to well with mouse/keyboard alone. Though some seem to enjoy using gamepads. Its all with getting the most out of the six degrees of freedom.

Thanks for that, really appreciate your help :)

The strange thing being, that I'm running exactly the same drivers as you. I'm really at a loss as to what's causing the problem. Never had any issues with the pad with any other game, it works fine to navigate the menus in E: D, it's the same controller as yours, running on the same drivers...
Very strange.

Q: Is clutch mode disabled in the Saitek control panel MFD tab?

A: Yes, but I've found that for it to stick and work, I need to keep the Saitek Control Panel open while in game.

I just had a thought. The first time I ever bought an Afterglow controller, before the first time I used it I had to install Microsoft Games for Windows. Once installed, I immediately uninstalled Microsoft Games for Windows. It was because for whatever reason my controller wouldn't work with a game on Steam until I did that. Please humor me, install Microsoft Games for Windows. Reboot. Then uninstall it and try Elite Dangerous again. That is the only thing I can think of that I did differently than you.

Posted this in the support forums when I was having trouble. This fixes it.

Now I have downloaded the full game I have managed to sort this problem.

You need to go to your main installation folder > EDLaunch > FORC-FDEV-D-1003 > ControlSchemes

Then follow the instructions here ... http://pileofstuff.org/usb-ids/

Hope that helps

I've edited this post. Realized my bindings configuration file would be of no use.

Have some rep, keeping the panel opens fixes the issue

In order to get Joy 6 to work. You will need to download Saitek's programming software. Disable Clutch Mode. Goto Grid View and remove all of the default profiles (i.e., Mode 2 & Mode 3) with exception of Mode 1. Make sure that you have your Saitek X52 plugged in before you begin. You will notice that when you press a button on the joystick, one of the corresponding grids will light up. When you see a grid light up, you can right click on it and set it to unprogrammed. In order to get Joy 6 to be used in-game this button needs to be freed up so you may use it. You can do this for all grids accordingly. Once done save as a new profile for your Saitek. Don't worry you can always reset if need be. Then log into Elite Dangerous, goto Options then Controls and use the Saitek Profile. From there set the buttons as you see fit. For example the slider on the throttle, I have that set as my forward and reverse. The options are near endless. Good luck.

For further clarification, on the Saitek X52 Pro, Joy 6 is the pinky button (thanks Maddog) on the throttle with the Exclamation Point. If you do not use the above method, the only way to get use out of Joy 6 is by leaving the Saitek control panel open which is a pain.

I followed it, I have absolutely no idea what I was doing, but it worked! Thank you :)

Thanks for all your help too, Kanevilorde, I really appreciate it.

You're welcome, I am just glad you got it working finally. Good luck out there and fly safe. And if you are ever in the area, come see me in Morgor (CMDR Kane Vilorde).

joy 6 is actually the pinky button, but thanks for suggestion, that did not work. Only thing that seems to work is to open the panel and leave it up in the background. not a big deal but would be nice if it worked correctly.
