I think I may have the weirdest setup, I have the Thrustmaster USB Stick(The simple one, nothing fancy) + the xbox controller right next to it(for things like chaff/shield cells/targeting subsystem/lateral thrusts/ship lights) AND the keyboard for some other functions, plus the mouse for the UI interaction.

Keyboard, mouse and voice attack.

Just remember if you switch to a new method, allow time to adjust, your not going to be Elite after 5 minutes.

Mentioned it in another thread already, but will repeat here:
The best cheap joystick is T16000m, like some of the guys on the previous page are using - it uses Hall sensors, like the more expensive joysticks, but costs several times less. CH Pro is a very good throttle to add to a T16000m, but since I live in Eastern Europe, it was easier for me to get a much cheaper (and slightly worse) throttle - Gametrix ECS, which is Russian-made.

Logitech 3D is also a nice stick, the F.L.Y. 5 and T-Flight HOTAS on the other hand tend to fall apart in a couple of months - the build quality is garbage. Cheap plastic and potentiometer-based axis controls, that wear out too fast.

P.S. A keyboard + mouse setup is fine too, actually :D For an average player, HOTAS is simply more fun, that's it. To get a real advantage over a keyboard+mouse on a HOTAS, you gotta have madskillz.

I'm using the Saitek Cyborg F.L.Y. 5. It works fine but I'm afraid of the build quality. It feels like a good compromise between cost and performance for me though. Can't really justify spending lots of cash on a stick that I might only use for Elite. I'm not sure how long I'll be playing Elite for that matter either.

When the FLY5 falls apart I'll check the market and decide if I'm gonna get a more expensive HOTAS-system or not.
I would like to have an x52.

Added to main joystick thread. :)

Ok - now can you please UNDO that? It was a different question entirely and deserves its own thread - now I don't know which posts were on this thread and which ones were recommendations for a joystick that makes docking easier!

How to map chaff to joystick button

Just bought a chaff, but I don't have any idea how to use it. A bit of searching came up with a default key of 'c' but in the options chaff isn't mentioned. After fitting it told me I had to assign it to a fire group (The fire group only seems to allow button 1 and 2). How can I map this to one of my joystick buttons?

S.

Use your joystick configuration software to map "c" to one of your other joystick buttons.

Alternatively, go to options > controls (hit Esc) and map it there.

If you map chaff to a firegroup, you'll only be able to use it when that firegroup is active, which I don't recommend.

I'd check the key binding options again. Chaff is in there. I mapped it to one of the buttons on the base of my joystick.
This.

It's down towards the bottom of the (very long) list of key binds. Most other games use tabs or sub-menus, whic are easier to navigate. I almost want to request a search function!

I use two t.16000m joysticks, and have them set up like a FPS...Left stick forward and backward control forward and reverse, left and right control strafing, and the twist function controls vertical movement. On the right stick, forward and backward are pitch, left and right are yaw, and the twist is rotation. All of it come pretty naturally except perhaps the vertical thrust, but that's just me still getting used to it.

Your control scheme gives me headaches just thinking about it. If it works for you great, but just seems counter-intuitive.
