Im sure most flight stick would be more than enough. I know some people say that any old gamepad would work but its just not the same. While I don't have this game yet. Flying games are great with a stick. Just like fighting games are great with fight sticks and racing games with wheels.

I have the thrustmaster warthog and, while I love it, it's a bit heavy and hardcore for most purposes, and is certainly $$ive. I wouldn't have it except that my company gave me a good annual bonus this year.

The Saitek HOTAS is pretty good. Having a throttle controller will really help you with your dogfighting.

For a complicated controller like the Warthog, expect to spend 2-3 hours just pondering setting it up, before you even do any flying.

The TM Warthog is outstanding; I've used TM gear for 20 years. But my 2nd choice, for less $$$ - just based on features, haven't tried one - Saitek x55.

But in general terms - in my opinion, nearly anything of quality is going to be better than a mouse, or a gamepad. Good luck :)

Does anyone know if there is any difference between the Thrustmaster HOTAS x 'PS3' version and the 'PC' version - I thought they were the same but they list different prices on some websites?

Logic

Exactly the same stick. Source:I used to own one.

Strongly considering buying a Thrustmaster T.Flight Hotas X to spice things up a bit.
The game is getting a bit stale for me right now.

Maybe getting a HOTAS would force me to immerse myself more.

I have a Saitek Aviator AV8R-02 which has been really good, I have preformed the zip tie mod on it just to reduce spring centre strength. It has lots of buttons which is great in a game like this.

Cheers,

Yep, same thing, there is a switch to toggle between PS3 and PC modes.

Thanks - thought they were the same but Amazon France lists them separately with a 7 Euro price difference! I was going to order one but they want £6 postage even though it is being sold from Amazon EU Sarl - same as most of the Amazon UK stuff! You'd think Amazon would be more joined up!

Controller presets

Hello,
Where are all these controller presets I am reading about. There are only four options in the presets on my (up to date) version of the game. Am I missing something? (That would be no surprise!) I've looked around a bit on the forum but all I can find are reviews and no real instructions on wht to do.

P.S Does anyone else hate captcha as much as I do?

Cheers

hey detty, i looked at some of the presets in game and then made my own lol I use a t-flight and voice attack. you sound like a numpty but i never have to go near the keyboard :D

And captcha is a pain in the bum

From what I know the game can get specific presets from your controller hardware or something like that. When I first connected my Hotas and then started the game, the options immediately showed a preset called "Thrustmaster T-Flight X" and many buttons of the Hotas were already mapped, although I changed some of them. So I guess it depends on what kind of controller you are using. In the end it's nothing more than a recommended button assignment.

Just got my CH Pro Throttle today. Dang, the thing is superb. Hand rests easy with everything in perfect reach, it sits one the desk without moving the slightest bit, while the throttle itself slides smoothly and effortlessly. Hats, buttons and ministick are fully mapped out. Now I'm almost halfway convinced to pair that with a CH Figtherstick. If that one is the same quality, you can't go wrong with it. The caveat would be missing twist, so pedals become mandatory. That makes the whole set a bit more pricey than I currently like, especially since my Logitech 3D Pro is still in perfectly working condition.

I looked around and decided to buy the Thrustmaster T-Flight Hotas X Joystick, which sell for around £ 40 on Amazon UK. http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B001CXYMFS/ref=oh_details_o01_s00_i03?ie=UTF8&psc=1
The reviews are pretty good and considering the price on those other flight joysticks, I think this is going to be a fair compromise. Has anybody else got this thing and can comment on the feel of it?

It is actually a very good, well made joystick. In all honesty it is the best joystick I have ever owned. I previously had the force feed back version which was terrible and literally fell apart.

The real selling point for me was the rudder rocker switch on the throttle. I've had it 3 years and use it for multiple flight sims. It is as solid today as when I bought it.

Good weight to it, adjustable stiffness, and enough buttons for elite.

True, the only thing that disappointed me was the almost non-existant resistance in the throttle. It feels more like I'm flying a small toy than a heavy spaceship. In the end it's a pretty good set though, I could map everything I needed for Elite and its pretty robust. Didn't expect that for such a price.

Bang for buck ... Thrustmaster T Flight Hotas is pretty hard to beat. I'm glad I bought one. I'm far too tight to spend a fortune on game controller - but I've not regretted purchasing one of these. I've read some reviews saying that the connecting cable between the two sides is a bit short but I've got a Macbook Pro between mine and have cable to spare.

Could it do with a could more buttons on the right hand? Yep .. but you can Voice Attack that pain away if you need it.

Caveat - the first couple of hours playing with it - I was rubbish. I felt like I had taken a big step backwards. Now I wouldn't fly any other way.

But at least the midpoint / zero throttle section has is easy to detect. You don't slide through it and end up going in reverse, which was a problem I had with a previous stick.

Thrustmaster T16000M with Belkin Nostromo n52TE gamepad here. The n52te is modded with Cherry Red MX switches (the original rubberdome keys wore out).

Got a Saitek x55 throttle and stick 2 weeks ago - so far it's all good.

A word of caution to those considering it though - it MAY lead to brain-fart moments caused by the constant re-gigging all the toggle switches. The most expensive one was confusing the landing gear and cargo jettison switches. Unfortunately for me that was after several hours of mining metal rich roids and by the time I realized what I'd done, most of the canisters had evaporated. I think I actually cried myself to sleep that night... ;)

But that wasn't the sticks fault - pilot error pure and simple.

If you DO get one, check out the config printout tool thingie at
