You have to get used to fly with a stick but with time it feel way more natural (especially with a Hotas) i bought a X52 just for Elite (and SC later on) and dont regrett.

Same, flying with a joystick and throttle makes it much more enjoyable.

I use the Extreme 3d Pro joystick from Logitech and works very well. Has 12 buttons (6 on base, 6 on stick) can program and has twist action on stick for 3rd axis. Use the hat for thrusters, even has a throttle lever on the base. Costs about 27 to 30 bucks here in the states at least. Took me a few tries to get it configured but once i did very happy with it.

X55 here, and i hate mouse, i feel like top gun with X55 compared to mouse. I guess on cheap joysticks there might be problem with accuracy.

What he said. I also run the x55 and PS, if you own it and are having ghost button issues, simply buy a powered USB port and problems solved. No more turbo thrust in space port.

Tried using Joy7 as a shift key? Say Joy7+Joy1 = deploy/retract hardpoints. :p Goodness it gets confusing, lol.

I complement the joystick by using voice attack. Being able to say Deploy Hardpoints, Retract hardpoints, Engage Warp when ready to jump to another system is so much easier and gets me more into the game. Sometimes Im literally shouting at my computer in the heat of battle, changing power distribution, targeting etc. Theres a post with a setup for it (voice attack) that adds many functions to voice activation. Works well for me, might give it a try if haven't. Voice attack has i think a 21 day free trial and only costs 8 bucks if decide works for you.

What exactly is track IR? heard alot about it but I dont know what it is or how it will help gameplay
Ifra-Red tracking; some dodgy little box sits on top of your screen and stares at you. When you move your head, it moves the camera in the game. Basically, you can look around without having to toggle head-tracking, iirc.

Use a Thrustmaster 16000m - cheap as chips but has good accuracy and very little play.

I tried the mouse for about 10 mins - then moved onto a gamepad - then got the joystick. Now have the joystick and a CH Pro throttle.

So, you may be able to aim better with a mouse, but it really feels like your flying with the joystick.

I pair this with EDTracker (instead of TrackIR - 9150 one is very good and its much cheaper) and VoiceAttack.

here is my control layout:

I must say yes to the OP's question. I started out with mouse and KB, but bought myself a thrustmaster Hotas-X and yes, it takes a couple of hours to get used to it, but it is so much more fun.
And while some can aim better with mouse and kb, the fact that you don't have to fly over your keyboard to, for instance chance the pips during a fight, gives you a major advantage.
If you choose to buy a Thrustmaster Hotas, you can search the forum for some great setups (or PM me, for my personal preference).

Hi,

I started off with the key/mouse and found the mouse very tricky (for me), so dusted off my old cyborg 3D and never looked back, I am still learning but flying seems so much better.

Finding it a little funny how people keep assuming this thing is going to be bigger than an anaconda, with some people on various threads genuinely asking how it's going to fit in the stations.

It's only got to be bigger than the Fed dropship guys and it may even be smaller than the Python for all we know.

Federation ships all have that corporate committee design aspect to them, I'll be looking forward to the new imperial ships with Gutamaya's stylish aesthetic more I think.

Will there be any rank requirements for this?

If it's specifically a ship for the federal navy, then I would assume so. If you can purchase it anywhere then no. I think it is planned to be a federal navy ship though, being so military lookin' and all that. Best start buddying up to the brass if you want one.

We need more ships of the smaller size - between the Cobra and the Asp and slightly above etc not more larger ships. There are massive gaps between the Cobra and the Asp, and the Asp and the Python, that need filling, plus more low-end ships because that is what most people spend their time with.

And this ship looks almost exactly like an Anaconda and a Python to me. Its a rather uninspired design. Why are all the ships in this game shaped like arrows? Its boring. What happened to the great ships from Frontier and FFE. We DONT need ALL of the ship[s to be streamlined arrows. We CAN have some unstreamlined versions that might be cheaper. They dont all need to refuel from suns and go down to planets. Ships in this game are becoming really dull compared to previous games.

Take a look at some of the wonderful Traveller RPG ships for goodness sake

While I love the look of the ship and would certainly welcome it as an NPC and player owned ship adding more to the top end is the wrong directino when (if?) the player base is at the low/mid end. The game really needs a lot more choice in the up to Python price range IMHO, the game has to be about the fun you can have without 400million credits NOT what you can buy when you've ground your life away to get 400million credits, if thats how its going to go then its really got some design direction issues IMO.

Doesn't have to be bigger than the conda, but just be combat orientated. A bit like a Viper vs a Cobra. The Conda being the Cobra, in this example, and whatever that thing is called being the Viper.
Just a big ship for dedicatd pewpew :D

Thanks, another thing for me to consider dumping dollars on :D
